Newly Marketed 'American Girl' Doll Accidently Named After Alleged Eco-Terrorist

Apparently hoping to expand their marketing reach, Mattel recently released their Jewish-themed doll. But it seems the toy company may have accidentally stumbled onto another market. As ABC reports: "Rebecca Rubin -- an alleged domestic terrorist on the lam since 2006 -- appears to have devoted her life's work to bringing down the capitalist system. But Rebecca Rubin is also an 18-inch doll, the newest in the American Girl collection, which brings in a whopping $463 million each year for the toy giant Mattel."

Woops. Apparently Mattel does about as much research as those folks who organized the Tea Bagging protests.

The New York Times explains:

Rebecca J. Rubin, who sometimes goes by the alias Little Missy, is a fugitive who was indicted in 2006 in a series of arson fires in Oregon dating to 1997, according to her F.B.I. wanted poster.

The wanted Ms. Rubin carries a $50,000 reward and "should be considered armed and dangerous," her wanted poster says. The doll Ms. Rubin costs $95 and can be bought with pet kittens and a toy challah bread.

While Mattel is hoping people regard their Rebecca Rubin fiasco as an unfortunate coincidence, the FBI is hoping it may actually bring in their real suspect. But Hamilton Nolan writing for Gawker has a better idea: "Clearly the solution is to arrest everyone responsible for creating American Girl Dolls."

Digg!

Maybe Mattell's marketing department should learn how to use Google. A search for "Rebecca Rubin" turns up an FBI wanted notice as the 3rd item on the first page of results, ...and the first two are about the doll, so the FBI notice would have been first.

Its not really a free market if you can't choose not to participate. Its not really freedom if you are still in economic chains.

This article is manipulative.

By trying to mock Mattel by pointing out its carelessness in naming a doll after an "eco-terrorist" it seems to imply that what Rebecca Rubin did in allegedly participating in burning a few places down in the name of environmentalism and attacking capitalism is actually bad.

If someone bombed all of Wall St. into rubble and killed thousands of innocent people I'd still celebrate because the benefits would justify the collateral damage. What Rebecca Rubin's done is not only peanuts compared to the significant problems in the world, it's actually heroic. We all know she's right in her cause, even if some people here are squeamish about the methods she endorses.

This part was just precious:

The wanted Ms. Rubin carries a $50,000 reward and "should be considered armed and dangerous," her wanted poster says.

Well if I ever see her I don't think I'll be worried about her shooting me. "Eco-terrorists" who burn buildings, or participate when others burn them, aren't exactly D.C. sniper types.

Rebecca J. Rubin is a Terraist -- a defender of Terra (a.k.a. Planet Earth) against capitalist environmental terrorists. She deserves our solidarity and support.

yeah, Rebecca Rubin gets called a terrorist, but what is that piece of shit in Kansas? he actually killed somebody for a political cause, likely to inspire terror in other Drs.

Alleged Eco-Terrorist or Alleged "Eco-Terrorist"?

The term "eco-terrorist" in the headline should be in quotes, even when it follows the word alleged.

Why? Because, even if Rebecca J. Rubin did what she is alleged to have done, the term eco-terrorist would be totally inappropriate. Better we should say that she's an alleged eco-guerrilla or eco-warrior, but certainly not any kind of terrorist!

So when's the "Muslim" American Girl doll coming out?

Has Mattel ever done a "Native American" American Girl doll? I believe they were here before the Ms. Rubins...and as for a "Muslim" American Girl doll...I won't hold my breath for that one. American Girl dolls are a racket just like Barbie, who holds the all-time record for coming out in as many roles/disguises/skin colors/whatnot as there are to be had. But come to think of it, I have never seen a "Peasant Barbie." :o)
