McCain's Palin Gamble: Untested Governor Is Only a 'Heartbeat' Away from the White House

So, McCain's chosen Alaska's 44 year-old Governor Sarah Palin -- forced childbirth activist, creationist and former beauty queen -- to be his running mate. Here's what folks are saying ...

Booman gives us some good background on Palin. She smoked pot but didn't like it. She rides snowmobiles and does like it.

Elizabeth Benjamin notes the governer's lack of experience and asks whether she's going to be the next Dan Quayle.

Kos, noting that she's a dedicated creationist -- evolution's just a theory, you know -- points out the obvious: her role is to rally the white evangelical base.

Steve Benen -- the ever-prolific and early-rising Steve Benen -- has two posts up that are worth perusing. He thinks Palin is an extremely odd choice, given McCain's strategy of emphasizing experience and calls the pick an act of desperation.

On HuffPo, they're re-running a piece by Chris Kelly, who says Palin's the next Dick Cheney because "she can look you in the eye and tell you black is white."

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog predicts a 180-degree turn from those disaffected "PUMAs" -- Clinton dead-enders -- who have been warning that the choice of any other woman as a running mate by anyone ever would be the worst sort of treachery to women everywhere.

Over at Feministe, Jill Filopivic is worried, arguing that Palin "could potentially woo white suburban politically moderate female voters" and that "she's likable," has a kid in the military and "has a very all-American story."

Jane Hamsher has a similar take: "I have to say that as a woman, there is something intuitively appealing about her selection, even though I politically disagree with everything she believes in and would never in a million years vote for her."

Jill C, always Brilliant at Breakfast, is agnostic on the question, wondering "just how important it is to the Hillarions to have a Vagina-American on a presidential ticket."

Grist's blog has the run-down on Palin's enviro record, including the fact that she "sued the Interior Department over its decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species" (Steven Colbert must love her).

Just for kicks, John Hinderaker, writing on the right-wing blog Powerline, is concerned: "I'm worried about Palin. I'm afraid she may be the Geraldine Ferraro of 2008. If she really is the nominee, will it come across as a desperation move, a Hail Mary, as Mondale's choice of Ferraro did in 1984? I'm afraid so." In 17 minutes, expect a post about how Palin is absolutely nothing like Ferraro -- how she's a brilliant and principled pick that just goes to show that McCain's totally ready to lead.

And the good folks at Heretical Ideas do us all a great service by noting that she's a damn, dirty Socialist.

So, what are you folks reading?

Digg!

Lets see, a union member, her husband is a union member.. noted for being a tough competitor and a formidible politican, has executive experience (Mayor and gov), which neither Obama, Biden nor McCain has,
obviously a women so maybe will pick up where Hillary left off.

Probably has a better handle on the energy issues than any of the other candidates. As for foreign affairs.. weak in this area but then again, so is Obama.

One thing she has over Biden, she doesn't think her boss is not ready for the top job!

Regardless can anyone remember a more interesting race than this?

America needs seasoned, honorable and healthy
Leadership.

McCain's health is failing and w/it sound judgement. His VP is not qualified for the job, she's Cabinet or advisory material.

No acceptable men of substance would take the job.

No one else would run, who also wouldn't murder him real quick if they achieved power. I think he just thought she was cute. I have already heard one reporter use the phrase, "assume the position". I can't hear it with out a cringe, yikes! What a message.

McCain is not hard to figure out. All the things he accuses Obama of are true about himself, remember his Paris ad? He is just a dirty old man. He wants to have fun. He knows he is going to lose anyway, so why not?

I can't wait to see her arguing FOR the birth rights of those successful spermatozoa, you know, her quasi religious concept of the male right of sexual dominance to the next generation of American women. Yeah, that's gonna fly like a lead balloon.

What this signals to me is that the Republican spin machine has found an opening with oil drilling & they are going to milk it for all it's worth. We let that ridiculous crap get traction & just like every other bald-faced lie for the last 8 years, they know that if you keep it simple & repeat it often enough it will stick.

Sarah Palin... hmmm.... looks like one of the DA's on "Law and Order." Anyway, she is clearly unqualified to be President and I think this can and probably will be used by the Obama/Biden team to further discredit McCain. I'm sure that she will continue the "Drill, drill, drill" mantra. Just because she's a governor who lives in Alaska doesn't mean that she knows ANYTHING about energy other than the aforementioned mantra. A pale shadow of the quality of Hillary's candidacy, so any Hillary fan who votes for McCain/Palin is either vindictive or let's say of something less than average intelligence. So, we do have our work cut out for us to do whatever it takes for Barack and Joe to win this election.

picks the baby doll beauty queen with transparency issues to be his running mate. I certainly can't see Hillary supporters voting for Sarah, if they barely scratch the surface they'll find everything they hate personified in that woman; anti-choice, anti-evolution, pro-war, anti-universal health care, etc. She's everything that the Repubs like, but they got one thing wrong. I bet they think they can tell her what to do and she'll do it unquestioningly. News for you DC, Sarah's got an independent streak and holds a mean grudge. Oh, just like McCain!

I think McCain just proved again how out of touch he is.

He is underestimating Hillary Democrats by thinking they'll vote for an anti-choice, completely inexperienced, and currently under investigation for scandal politician simply because she's a woman!

He is also overestimating the extremely fundamentalist evangelicals by thinking they'll vote for a young, inexperienced, WOMAN just because she's a creationist and pro-life.

This is all about the conservative base, specifically white, suburban, Christian women who were thinking about staying home from the polls:
* Military mom
* Anti-abortion
* Athletic & takes kids to athletics
* Probably Hunts & Fishes
* Anti-evolution.

The target audience will feel like they finally see one of their own in the spotlight. My guess is this demographic is tired of hearing that they are self-gender hating because they are anti-abortion and this nominee affirms their own lifestyle, religious, and family choices. And I know of a lot of women fitting that category who "don't pay a lot of attention to politics" who will suddenly be interested.

The election now is all about voter turn out and fairness at the polls. If we as progressives want Obama to win this election, we need to register voters, get them to the polls, and make sure that they are allowed to vote when they get there. Get out and get busy!

McCain chose a VP candidate because she's female, and apparently, with very little else to recommend her. She's attractive, I'll grant. Makes for better photo ops. But, really, how is she qualified? She is two years into a term governing one of the least populous state in the country. There are mayors in most states who have more credentials to run a country. One heartbeat away from the presidency? With McCain's age and medical history, that is frightening.

Where's McCain's so-called LOYALTY to America?

He doen't give a good-goddamn about what's best for the United States. He only cares about winning the election.

Why else would he select a soccer mom with a mere 2 years experience as governor when she could very easily become THE PRESIDENT?!?!

She's little more than a glorified housewife, and she has admitted as much during her acceptance speech.

It's unimaginable that she may end up the leader of the free world!!!!

McCain has said that he's willing to lose the election in order to win the war.

Well, we now have proof-positive that he's filthy fucking LIAR. He'll do ANYTHING to win the election.

John McCain just blew the election. He must think we're all morons to have selected her for the VP slot! He really DOESN'T get it! Women who supported Hilllary know Hillary - for decades now - and Hillary was running for the Presidency - and some might reasonably argue that she's proven herself to be qualified for the position. This unknown, very UNQUALIFIED young, attractive woman is definitely NOT Presidential material and everyone (even she) knows it. What sane person will vote for John McCain now? He's 72 and chances are good that he might actually die while in office. Think about it - and then we get stuck with this very untested, unqualified unknown? Who would want her representing this whole great country? It just proves that McCain lacks good (or even sane) judgement. Talk about risky! Congratulations, Obama - this should put you in the White House for sure.

Statement from NOW's Kim Gandy: "Not Every Woman Supports Women's Rights"

Not Every Woman Supports Women's Rights

August 29, 2008

Statement of NOW PAC Chair Kim Gandy on the Selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's Vice Presidential Pick

"Sen. John McCain's choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate is a cynical effort to appeal to disappointed Hillary Clinton voters and get them to vote, ultimately, against their own self-interest.

Gov. Palin may be the second woman vice-presidential candidate on a major party ticket, but she is not the right woman. Sadly, she is a woman who opposes women's rights, just like John McCain.

The fact that Palin is a mother of five who has a 4-month-old baby, a woman who is juggling work and family responsibilities, will speak to many women. But will Palin speak FOR women? Based on her record and her stated positions, the answer is clearly No.

In a gubernatorial debate, Palin stated emphatically that her opposition to abortion was so great, so total, that even if her teenage daughter was impregnated by a rapist, she would "choose life" -- meaning apparently that she would not permit her daughter to have an abortion.

Palin also had to withdraw her appointment of a top public safety commissioner who had been reprimanded for sexual harassment, although Palin had been warned about his background through letters by the sexual harassment complainant.

What McCain does not understand is that women supported Hillary Clinton not just because she was a woman, but because she was a champion on their issues. They will surely not find Sarah Palin to be an advocate for women.

Sen. Joe Biden is the VP candidate who appeals to women, with his authorship and championing of landmark domestic violence legislation, support for pay equity, and advocacy for women around the world.

Finally, as the chair of NOW's Political Action Committee, I am frequently asked whether NOW supports women candidates just because they are women. This gives me an opportunity to once again answer that question with an emphatic 'No.' We recognize the importance of having women's rights supporters at every level but, like Sarah Palin, not every woman supports women's rights."

Maybe a renaming for the presidential candidate may be in order: McClown. What a choice, no teenager available? What was his talk about inexperience? What if he keels over in his first year? Heaven help the USA if that should happen. It had to be a woman and a reactionary at that. Repugnant Repugnicans.

In 17 minutes, expect a post about how Palin is absolutely nothing like Ferraro -- how she's a brilliant and principled pick that just goes to show that McCain's totally ready to lead.

Because this, in your mind, would reinforce the idea that Powerline is only honest long enough to keep their readers interested, and that they are really just another cog in the war machine, right?

Just to clarify, the comment quoted from powerline doesn't say (or even imply) anything about Palin's brilliance, principles, or leadership abilities. It's more like saying Pierce Brosnan is the new Sean Connery (though I don't think he is), or Blue is the new Black. Nobody's saying the two things are like or unlike each other, just that they fill the role today that the other filled many years ago.

He's saying that voters may react to Palin the same way they reacted to Ferraro, in that they will disregard any qualifications she may have, simply because she was picked in the wake of Hillary's disqualification.

The very next post on Powerline says "Sadly, but not surprisingly, identity politics has run amok in this country. In my view, Palin wouldn't have been seriously considered for vice president but for her gender." I am pretty sure you would agree with that. I wonder if, when Obama selects his running mate, any AlterNet writers will call Obama's motives into question?

I doubt it.

Obama selected a VP based on three main criteria - 1. Someone ready to be President at a moment's notice. 2. Someone who would challenge the thinking of the President (not a "yes man" but someone able to challenge Obama's thinking). 3. Someone who could help him govern. It seems McCain did not use any of the same logical criteria for his choice but obviously chose someone who he thought Hillary's "18 million" would vote for to get him elected. But then what? With all the major problems we Americans are faced with today - illegal war in Iraq, forgotten war in Afganistan, economic crises for most middle and lower income households, energy crises, credibility crises, education crises, health care crises, the excessively authoritarian executive branch, etc. - what a lack of judgement McCain has demonstrated with this first important decision. Obviously McCain has proven that he is out of touch and is the really risky candidate! How can ANYONE vote for him now?

This choice is not about getting disaffected Hillary voters, as much as the media thinks it is. And it certainly is not about attracting any readers of this forum to vote for him.

This is all about motivating the Conservative Christian base, which has been luke warm on McCain. And to that end, it is the best choice he could make. James Dobson must be beside himself with joy.

The party that gets out its base will win. And this is shaping up to be too close to call and might be a repeat of 2000.

Progressives, get out the vote and protect voting rights.

From what I've read, Palin seems to be the embodiment of conservative ideals (particularly social issues). McCain's choices allows the republicans to distract voters from the issues by:
1) reinforcing the idea of McCain as a maverick for picking an "unknown" and "risky" VP,
2) allowing the dialogue to continue about experience and readiness by distracting the media with comparisons between Obama and Palin, rather than Obama and McCain,
3) providing an emotional story in-line with her stance on abortion (deciding to have a child though there was a risk of Down Syndrome--something every mother over 35 faces) to distract us from needed prevention and pre/neo-natal care,
4) giving a double-edged sword to Biden in debates: does he "tear her apart" (as some have suggested he will do) and risk appearing mean or take it easy and appear weak?
5) allowing McCain to appear as if he really cares about women by saying "look, I'm not really a misogynist" and distracting us from his voting record against women,
6) keeping Hillary Clinton in the conversation as the passed-up contender for the executive branch rather than bringing into discussion her possible roles in the Obama campaign, the Obama presidency, or appointment to the Supreme Court.

The republican lead media have already distracted voters by attacking Obama's character and his qualifications--letting the false statements become ingrained in voters' minds. Now they're going after liberal policies with attacks that will distract us from the real issues: Dems will take your guns, make you have abortions, banish God, make you become vegetarians and eat tofu, they'll force you to drive a non-American made hybrid, and they'll tax you. Those lies need to stop.

McCain's gone PUMA hunting, and the bitter old babes are begging to be bagged. McCain's folks did the math, and he knows that if he can split Hillary's supporters, he wins the White House.

Meanwhile, the Clintons have once again had it both ways - they can give great speeches at the convention and win the adoration of the party faithful, while their prolonged campaign and post-primary snits helped to consign Obama to the trash heap and set Hillary up for 2012.

But the question is: will African-Americans forgive the Clintons and the PUMAs four years from now for denying their guy the White House, just like the PUMAs refuse to forgive Obama this year? If not, the Democrats may go the way of the Whig party.

Four years is a short time for the Clintons to wait, but a long time for others to carry a grudge -- isn't it?

I couldn't help but laugh that they actually think disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters would jump ship because a young chick with no experience, oh, Life-long NRA member, believes women should be forced to complete pregnancies yet has no desire to help the social service agencies that will ultimately end up caring for these kids--a woman who is completely opposite of Hillary Clinton in all major policies, but because she is "change", especially for the republicans, women are going to run right after McCain because she is a woman.

As a woman, I am completely insulted by that idea, and I can't help but wonder if this truly is the last gasp of a doomed campaign.

She doesn't know what a vice president does. She's a creationist.

She may have to serve her vice-presidency in the slammer because in her first and only 18 months of state office gig the legislature appointed a special prosecutor.

She got a total of 909 votes in her mayoral victory, and then she beat a Democrat in Alaska of all places by 7%. That's it! Not exactly a hardened campaigner.

She apparently needed to pop a fertility drug at age 43 in order to have a genetically messed-up baby. These things happen at 43, people.

The problem with 5 kids is that it would be nice for someone to stay home and take care of all of them. Hillary took care of 1 kid while Bill ran for office, and then had an adult daughter helping her win votes when she ran. Doesn't taking care of the kids you already have make sense?

What kind of income does a professional snowmobile rider make?

Chart your own course the way she did hers. You are not in her league, and were picked by McCain because no one else wants the job. If he DOES get elected, the VP will still be Cheney. Maybe you can teach your new boss how to use a computer. Alaska is a long way from D.C. You can be a good clerical assistant and gopher. Every now & then it's not a terrible thing to refuse a job offer. I think you're gonna cry alot at your desk. Thanks, ANNA

I've been a lifelong Democrat and liberal. This woman's politics repeal me. Yet the people bringing up inexperience better watch out. This woman is a state GOVERNOR. Which meant she actually ran the state. Obama has nothing on that--just a stint as a US senator and a very short one at that. He has run nothing compared to what she has (no budgets, no businesses, no cities or states.) And while he chants about change, he brought in one of the oldest Washington insiders. (35 years in Washington, isn't it?) So he's actually the inexperienced one wanting to be President and while Palin is inexperienced, she's VP candidate and more experienced than Obama. McCain made a risky, brilliant move. I only wish Obama had had the same courage, to pick someone to run with who would be a change rather than Biden and his plagarism scandel past. Still voting third party.

After being brought on stage, the VP choice claimed that she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the infamous so-called bridge to nowhere in Alaska. Turns out, she did indeed support that bridge being built, as she said in an interview in 2006.

The public will finally find out where the oil from Alaska actually goes. It does NOT go to the lower 48. It goes to Japan.

So all of this Repub crap about drilling to make us energy independent is just so much garbage for the uninformed to chew on. In fact, the oil will be simply dropped into a big pool of world oil. It would be better for McCain if he just kept them in the dark.

For months I have been stating that I was going to vote for Ralph Nader, after always being a Democrat. I love the Obama/Biden ticket. I didn't take enough time to read about Senator Obama.

Being from Arizona I know about McCain and we can't be nice with him. He is a mean man, who loves to tell nasty jokes with young girls and women as the blunt of it (google). He pushed a woman in a wheelchair and the complaints were ignored by the Republican Ethics Committee. Being in a wheelchair myself I know how vulnerable we feel in our chairs; McCain should have paid for that mistake but everyone always excuses him because he was a POW and we have to be lenient about his temper tantrums, like some little boy. If he can't control his temper with a women in a wheelchair visiting his office about a POW Bill, then I surely don't want him near the button in the White House.

McCain Assaulted a Woman in a Wheelchair (dailykos)

A wheel-chair bound woman asked McCain about the Community Choice Act, a piece of legislation for disabled Americans that would give individuals greater freedom on where to live. “What that would do is it would end the institutional bias,” the questioner said, then asked him if he would consider supporting it.
“I will not,” McCain responded, “because I don’t think it’s the right kind of legislation.” A trio of people in wheelchairs left the room shortly after his response.

Why didn't he tell why he didn't like it?

The Republicans have had the Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court. They will never do anything about abortion because they need it to rally the Republicans.

Recently I didn’t have to read John McCain’s lips because I heard him loudly and clearly state that he agreed with a lady who had told him that she thought we needed to implement the draft again. On another day recently he stated that we needed to privatize Social Security.

I’m a Catholic Grandmother and I don’t want my grandsons being drafted and sent overseas to war for oil or to occupy another country. I wonder how those Catholic Moms, that were talked about on the news today, that McCain hopes will join his cause, feel about the draft or about their parents Social Security being privatized.

With Senator Obama’s experience as a Constitutional Professor, with a Democratic Congress he can make the corrections to undue the damage of the Republican Congress.

John McCain made the wrong decision for his choice of Vice President, experience is important. He passed up two Republican women who are experienced and both have been on Forbes Magazine's World's 100 Most Powerful Women, Maine’s Senator Olympia J. Snowe and Texas’s Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

I couldn’t believe it when they played Governor Palin’s remarks about Iraq and she said didn’t know much about it. When I was 20 years old the Air Force sent my fiancé to Vietnam for the first time. I read about the history of the country and about how the French were there before us. I can’t believe that she is sending her son over there and doesn’t know about it.

I’m surprised that McCain decided on a Mom with young children, they went after Hillary back in 1999 for her being too career-minded. I did have my feminism tested today seeing that tiny little boy in his sister’s arms and thinking he needed a full-time Mom. She said she didn’t know what a VP does, she will spend some time away from her children, I am really surprised at the Republicans change about Motherhood. But then there is:Republicans Vote Against Moms;No Word Yet on Puppies, Kittens
washingtonpost

Rachel Maddow already found a lie of Governor Palen’s, she was FOR ‘the Bridge to No Where’ before she was AGAINST it. Senator McCain is not right for the Presidency.

Because I'm not. I'm as insulted as if they had dressed Mick Romney up in a dress and told us he was a woman. Palin's anti-choice to the extreme, doesn't believe global warming is effecting us, doesn't believe the polar bear deserves protection, and likely thinks the sun revolves around a flat earth. She doesn't believe in gay rights but has gay friends, which is like saying you're pro-slavery but you like black people. A friend told me I should vote for Hillary because she's a woman and so am I, which is as stupid as saying I should vote for Obama because we're both black. You're supposed to vote for people because you think they can do a good job of running the country. Look where picking the person you wanted to have a beer with landed us.

Yes, Palin is a governor, but there are 689,000 people in Alaska vs the 12 million people Obama represents in Illinois. Her state has half the population as the county I live in. Their ages have little to do with how I feel about either of them. I have worked long enough to know people can suck no matter what their experience. But I do know Obama inspires me. He makes me want to stand up for my country and take it back from the clutches of the right wing who are bent on destroying it. He has a platform I can believe in. Palin, she's just a person along for the ride, and the nightmare of her being one cancerous mole away from the presidency makes me want to run to the pharmacy and stock up on birth control before they tell insurance companies to stop covering it and pharmicists to stop dispensing it.

is to get hillary's voters, but even the most hard core hillary fans are not going to be enticed by an anti-women woman who is much more firm in her anti-abortion stance than mccain. I don't believe mccain feels either way on abortion however just courts that constituency for votes. Sarah, on the other hand, really wants abortion illegal. Although she doesn't care about preserving the environment for all the children, and is pro-war which is also a grave danger to our children, she hypocritically has an extreme stance against abortion. However, this is no surprise as we expected him to pick somebody scary and oppressive.

I believe mccain hung himself on this one. Her educational level is not high enough to offset her extremely low experience level and even to stupid people this won't smell right.

Thank you mccain, good choice!

Sure he selected her thinking he will get the "disaffected" hillary voters, and to attract the oppressor (aka "Christian") vote as well, but the icing on the cake is that if anybody from the Obama camp criticizes her for lack of experience, with the help of criminal rove, who our congress does not have the guts to arrest, the comments will be reframed to make Obama appear anti-women. This all seems ridiculously stupid this choice, and on first observation appears to be a public self-hanging by mccain, but no doubt this has all been planned out. The repugnican party should start swinging pretty soon. It's all been pretty calm so far. I'm just waiting to see what they pull out of their bag of evil.

I mean mommy would have to be on call 24/7. How does a woman live in Alaska and work in D.C. Especially since one of the children has special needs. If she can pull herself away from 5 children I would agree, she is tough. Most of us couldn't do it. She's making a very selfish career move and the average woman would be criticized from all sides for such a decision. I questions her 'family values' and her motives. Thanks.ANNA

From yesterday's editorial in the Fairbanks newspaper:

She has never publicly demonstrated the kind of interest, much less expertise, in federal issues and foreign affairs that should mark a candidate for the second-highest office in the land.

Most people would acknowledge that, regardless of her charm and good intentions, Palin is not ready for the top job.

It’s clear that McCain picked Palin for reasons of image, not substance.

There also was some pandering right from the start. 'I told Congress thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere,' Palin reported to the crowd in Dayton, Ohio. 'If our state wanted a bridge, I said, we’d build it ourselves.' But the state kept the bridge money.

What do we know that these Alaskans don't?

Sarah Palin appeared on the Charlie Rose program in October along with Governor Janet Napolitano of Arizona. Ms. Palin appeared to be bright and articulate, but at the same time completely beholden to Alaskan oil interests and a somewhat naive lockstep adherent of conservative ideology. In comparison to Ms. Napolitano she seemed a relative lightweight, more salesperson than competent administrator.

This is how the right wing works: like vultures.

Progressives work tirelessly for decades to get us to the point where a glass ceiling has 18 million cracks in it...only for the vultures to show up at the last second with an ice pick. Fight for decades for civil rights...only to wind up with people like Clarence Thomas in positions of authority.

It’s the same old story it always was, and always will be: the have-nots do all the work, and the haves take all the credit...along with the money and power.

Pathological Liar
Posted by: LeaderofMen on Aug 30, 2008 7:04 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Karl Rove is a pathological liar. This makes it clear and evident - even to other pathological liars. There is no possible way a self-respecting HUMAN BEING, much less anyone with the slightest understanding of politics or what's at stake, could bring themselves to vote for a Republican in this election.

============================

On August 10, Karl Rove went on “Face The Nation” to argue that Senator Obama would make an “intensely political choice” for Vice President without regard for the “responsibilities of president.” At the time, Rove believed Obama would choose Tim Kaine, and argued against him by saying this:

"With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he’s been a governor for three years, he’s been able but undistinguished. I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America. And again, with all due respect to Richmond, Virginia, it’s smaller than Chula Vista, California; Aurora, Colorado; Mesa or Gilbert, Arizona; north Las Vegas or Henderson, Nevada. It’s not a big town. So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I’m really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States?" --Karl Rove

THEN THIS.....

Earlier this month, Karl Rove repeatedly argued that Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) would not be “capable” of being Vice President. He complained that “he’s been a governor for three years” and said Kaine was mayor of only the “the 105th largest city in America,” referring to Kaine’s tenure as mayor of Richmond, VA. “It’s not a big town,” he quipped.

Yesterday, however, Rove argued just the opposite with regard to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R). He explained on Fox News that Palin was a good choice as McCain’s vice presidential nominee because she was “mayor of the second largest city in Alaska”:

ROVE: "She’s a populist, she’s an economic and social conservative, she took on the incumbent governor of the state Frank Murkowski — Republican — beat him in the primary, won an upset in the general election. She’s a former mayor. She’s the mayor of, I think, the second largest city in Alaska before she ran for governor."

Kaine was indeed mayor of the ‘the 105th largest city in America.’ While there, he governed nearly 200,000 people and managed a bureaucracy of over 8,000 employees. By contrast, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, AK, a town of just over 8,000 people that currently employs just over 100 individuals and — contrary to Rove’s claim — didn’t even make it into the 10 largest cities in AK while she was mayor.

probably because he died at 70 !! (see below) So, not to put too fine a point on it, he has a father who died BEFORE age 72 and a mother who is 90+ and healthy but a bit inappropriate in her comments. Sarah Palin would be "just a heartbeat away"!

From a Time magazine article in 1981:

DIED. John S. McCain Jr., 70, salty, hard-driving four-star admiral and World War II hero who was commander in chief of U.S. forces in the Pacific during the Viet Nam War; of a heart attack; aboard a military plane while returning from a trip to Europe. The son of a four-star admiral, McCain served as a submarine commander during World War II and was appointed commander of naval services in Europe in 1967. McCain, who retired in 1972, maintained that the U.S. was engaged in a "wet war" for naval superiority with the Soviet Union, whose growing fleet of submarines posed "a direct threat to our free use of the oceans of the world."
