After months of delays, a handful of carefully-selected reporters will have access this morning to 400 pages of John McCain’s medical records. By all appearances, the McCain campaign is rather panicky about what journalists might find, and have gone to almost comical lengths to make this process as ridiculous as humanly possible.

At the outset, let’s not brush too quickly past the series of delays. A year ago, reporters began asking for access to the records. At the time, the campaign said the release of the materials would come in a matter of weeks. It didn’t. Then, McCain aides said they’d release the information in March. Then, without explanation, they changed the date to April. Then, again without explanation, they changed the date to May. (I wasn’t inclined to be suspicious about this until McCain started acting suspiciously.)

Finally, the McCain campaign picked this morning — the Friday before Memorial Day weekend — to “show” the materials to a select few, none of whom will be able to even make a photocopy of a single page.

As Americans kick off Memorial Day weekend, Sen. John McCain today will release 400 pages of his medical records to a handpicked group of reporters who can neither walk out with the documents nor photocopy them, illustrating the campaign’s sensitivity about the 71-year-old candidate’s age and health.

The health of the presumed Republican presidential nominee, who bears large scars on his face and neck from surgery in 2000 to remove an invasive form of skin cancer, has been a question throughout the early part of the campaign.

For more than a year, the four-term senator has repeatedly promised to release his recent medical records but has not done so.

The closer one looks at this, the more unusual it appears.

In 1999, during McCain’s first presidential campaign, the senator, then 63, was quite forthcoming when it came to his medical history. Months before a single vote was cast, McCain made available 1,500 pages of medical and psychiatric records.

This morning, in contrast, McCain will make 400 pages available for three hours to hand-picked reporters who won’t even be allowed to make photocopies. What’s more, McCain’s psychiatric records will be off-limits. (The medical records released today will only cover the years 2000 to 2008.)

For a candidate who has nothing to hide, he’s acting like he has something to hide. And given that McCain is running to be the oldest president ever elected, and he has a history of medical problems including melanoma, this is a little unsettling.

I’m not a medical reporter, but it seems obvious to me that a journalist would want — indeed, need — to get a copy of the materials and then show them to medical professionals for an independent evaluation. Reporters aren’t experts on medicine. A brief look at records they can’t take with them is, by design, intended to conceal. Doing all of this the Friday before Memorial Day weekend just drives the point home.

I should clarify that most reporters aren’t experts on medicine. The New York Times’ Lawrence Altman not only covers medicine for the paper of record, but is also a trained physician. In the world of medical reporters, Altman is arguably the nation’s most respected, and he covered McCain’s health during the 2000 campaign.

It’s interesting, then, that the McCain campaign decided not to invite the New York Times to this morning’s gathering at all.

The last time McCain released his medical records, one of the reporters who viewed them was the Times’ Lawrence Altman. Not only is Altman the dean of science reporters, but he’s also an M.D. — i.e., somebody who, even in the short span of three hours, would be able to assess the significance and full meaning of the records. And in an article earlier this year, Altman started raising questions about McCain’s present health — and his campaign’s curious delay in making the records public.

It sounds like the Times isn’t in the pool this time around, which means no Altman.
In all likelihood, there’s nothing to this. In 2000, the records, which drew minimal scrutiny, didn’t raise any red flags. This year, if McCain had a serious health problem that would interfere with his duties, he probably wouldn’t have run in the first place.

But the campaign’s conduct on the issue raises questions, doesn’t it?

Digg!

I know (hope!) you people don't seriously think that this loser and his lackeys would offer up anything that even hints at ill health.

One thing they're hiding for sure is anything to do with his face and head. Otherwise they'd have to explain why he was the model for Quagmire, the pervert neighbour on 'Family Guy'.

We've already had a Vice President who hid the fact that he had a heart attact while running. I'm sick and tired of the republicans demanding this and that of everyone else but giving up not one bit of information about themselves. The man is 72 years old for Gods sake. I'm only 56 and I have some health issues. Somebody of his age, I'm sorry to say is going to have people more interested in his health if he wants to lead this country. I want all his records. I don't want another President who starts hiding crap even before he's elected. If he can't come clean he shouldn't run. He has already hidden his assets now he wants to hide his health. This man is not fit to govern this country.

Appearance says more than any Medical Record will

Having worked in Long Term Care as a social worker in an interdisplinary team (DR, RN,PT OT,SPT..) Mac appears to have suffered a stroke with in the last few years. His forgetfulness, confusion and his 'body mechanics'. He is Inable to retain information -ie- sunnis,Shia's, Insurgenence ,and militias- even after being told (corrected) on at least one previous occasion -the day before. He also moves as though he has received Physical therapy -has had difficulty moving Rt & Lt arms independently- appear 'attached' movements'- other wise only using his Left for 'expression'laso watch when he walked those Pizza 's only a few feet- shuffle, balance unstable with out use of his arms as counterbalance.
I could care less what records he has allowed to be released state, considering the Pre holiday weekend release and the limited peopel who are allowed to evaluate them tells me he is hiding far more than 'polps'

Prescription medications

One of the prescription medications that John McCain uses is Ambien. This drug can have a troubling side effect: People under the influence can do bizarre things and have no memory of it when they wake in the morning. Reports are of people cooking and consuming meals, driving, walking, talking, etc. with no memory of the events in the morning. I know someone personally who drove around in the middle of the night, did some minor property damage in the vehicle, and when morning came, could not understand how and why he was in the vehicle. Imagine POTUS in such an altered state. Scary.

Politics aside, why all the mean spirited conjecture that's out there?

Not directly related to the blog entry, but I just wanted to offer come comments on his--at least apparent--health status from what we have known and now know:

A) He's 5'9", and 168lbs. That alone tilts toward the better side of health than up to 65% of the population in some of our fatter urban areas.

B) Related to A) his heart checks out a-ok. Not "for a person of his age" mind you, but just fine, period. His cholesterol is a tad high and he's a little hypertensive, but he's running a presidential campaign. If that doesn't get your humors in a dander once in a while, what will?

C) The conjecture on his melanoma is mostly ridiculous and it is sometimes disgusting. He's been treated and released; now what in the hell is all the hubub about? How would the tone change were Clinton a breast cancer survivor? What sort of howls and wails would you hear from her devotees were one to suggest that a candidate with a lumpectomy couldn't be trusted to live for four complete years? From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely invite anyone who insists that cancer is an impending death sentence to take a long walk off a short bridge. Further, I'd point out that he (going back to A) takes care of his health, and stays out of the sun (5 melanomas? duh people, no wonder he's on the pasty side. Btw, his lymph node resections account for the slightly "puffy" look of his face, neck, and head). On a related topic, does anyone know exactly how many nail coffins and cancer sticks does Obama smokes? I'm not drawing any direct comparisons between McCain's chance of recurrence and Obama's cancer-promoting habits, I'm just saying there's a spanking lot of hypocrisy among the more politically religious out there.

D) Yeah, he's got some physical and most likely some emotional baggage left over from his stay in a VC hotel. I defy anyone to suggest that being a tortured prisoner of war robs someone of their ability to lead for all time. I don't like some of his policies, and I hope he doesn't actually become president, but for f--k's sake that doesn't mean it's because he's got a case of the galloping loonies. It means he has positions of policy that will negatively effect our country, in my opinion. That's reason enough to oppose his candidacy, without having to stoop to creating my own reality to justify my opposition.

As far as the blog topic goes, I'd be hesitant to release my medical history, too. Especially the psychiatric records. Not knowing whether you're going to be around in six months or six years immediately following cancer therapy can throw some nasty wrenches into your outlook on life, in the shorty term.

Or so I've heard.

In short, there are plenty of good reasons to vote for a candidate other than McCain, without the hypocrisy, the spitefulness, and the contempt that we are seeing towards old people, cancer survivors, and prisoners of war. Especially if they still seem healthy as a damn horse.

More concerned about his Mental Health

What we dont need is another Saint Ronald with incipient Allzheimers, or any other kind of dementia. This would be perfect for the corporate puppet masters, they already have the policy in place, 4 more years of the same old crap. And after Pops McBush wakes from his naps, he can be sent out spread the Good News.
