McCain Ally Hagee Sees Hitler as Fulfilling God's Will

Posted by Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report at 7:01 AM on May 22, 2008.

The media continues to give McCain's radical pastor a pass.

Last week, John Hagee, a televangelist sought out by John McCain for political support, expressed regret to Catholics for his attacks on the Roman Catholic Church (he’s called the church, among other things, “the great whore” and “a false cult system”). This week, it looks like it’s time for yet another apology.

John Hagee, the controversial evangelical leader and endorser of Sen. John McCain, argued in a late 1990s sermon that the Nazis had operated on God’s behalf to chase the Jews from Europe and shepherd them to Palestine. According to the Reverend, Adolph Hitler was a “hunter,” sent by God, who was tasked with expediting God’s will of having the Jews re-establish a state of Israel.

Seriously. He really did make the argument.

This is the guy whose support McCain worked for a year to earn. It’s also the guy McCain refuses to repudiate, and to this day, whose endorsement he’s “proud” and “glad” to have.

For that matter, it’s also the same guy Joe Lieberman defended on Fox News last week, because, as Lieberman explained, Hagee “represents a lot of people in this country, particularly Christians who care about the state of Israel.”

More from Sam Stein’s report:

Going in and out of biblical verse, Hagee preached: “‘And they the hunters should hunt them,’ that will be the Jews. ‘From every mountain and from every hill and from out of the holes of the rocks.’ If that doesn’t describe what Hitler did in the holocaust you can’t see that.”

He goes on: “Theodore Hertzel is the father of Zionism. He was a Jew who at the turn of the 19th century said, this land is our land, God wants us to live there. So he went to the Jews of Europe and said ‘I want you to come and join me in the land of Israel.’ So few went that Hertzel went into depression. Those who came founded Israel; those who did not went through the hell of the holocaust.

“Then god sent a hunter. A hunter is someone with a gun and he forces you. Hitler was a hunter. And the Bible says — Jeremiah writing — ‘They shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the holes of the rocks,’ meaning there’s no place to hide. And that might be offensive to some people but don’t let your heart be offended. I didn’t write it, Jeremiah wrote it. It was the truth and it is the truth. How did it happen? Because God allowed it to happen. Why did it happen? Because God said my top priority for the Jewish people is to get them to come back to the land of Israel.” (Listen to the audio below.)

The sermon, which was first posted by Bruce Wilson on his site, Talk To Action, adds another element to Hagee’s controversial stance on the state and history of Israel. It also may provide a new round of political headaches for McCain who has admitted that seeking out Hagee’s endorsement was a mistake, but still declared himself “glad to have” it.

John Hagee’s Ministries did not immediately return request for comment.

I can’t imagine why not.

I’m trying to imagine what the reaction would be if Obama sought out a pastor, accepted his endorsement, campaigned alongside him, defended him from criticism, and then we learned that this same pastor thought Hitler was fulfilling God’s will. I have a hunch reporters might ask Obama if he’d be willing to repudiate such a person.

Digg!

Laura Flanders: Vanity Fair's Retort to the New Yorker's Obama Cover Misses the Mark
If Vanity Fair wanted to flip the New Yorker cover on the GOP, they'd have to portray the media's lies about the candidate. Not the true stuff.

Except he is killing Muslims instead of Jews, Bush has been acting pretty much like Hitler did, and he seems to think he has been doing what "God" wants. Is that so different than Hagee? McCain and Lieberman also buy into this insanity, and just a little further removed, the Clintons.

Just another story the Mainstream Media will ignore.
Doing a search on Google News, there are not very many mainstream US news outlets reporting on this, if any at all. Not yet, anyway.

Hagee has said some things that make Louis Farrakan and the Rev Fred Phelps look positively sane.
Yet, where is the outrage? Only on the (relatively far) Left?

The only way you can get the media to report on Hagee is when he criticizes Catholics. But when he says even worse stuff about gays, or when he calls for nuclear Apocalypse, then the media is silent.

But, hey, Obama's Rev Wright doesn't wear a flag-pin, you know. We WILL hear about THAT.

It tells us in Revelation that in The Final Days there will be many False Prophets...

Hagee, Dobson, Parsley, Falwell, Robertson these are all false prophets..predicted in Revelation..The Rapture is a great heresy..there is no Rapture as they teach it or anything like it..

McCain has aligned himself with the false prophets and forces of darkness that seek to bring on Armageddon..

How much you get to say depends on who you are. I don't understand why Hagee is allowed to babble on this way. Why would his constitutional right to practice his religion go a step futher and allow him freedom of speech to include trashing other peoples' religions? Can't we shut him up. Thanks, ANNA

These are the Religious Extremeist who must be watched and all affilations monitored!Hagge's most diturbing seermons have not even been released- He his an'End of Day' sociopath. this plan to Achieve 'Rapture' is to Pre-emptively strike Iran so to provoke Russi & China to respond (theri oil resource) thus begin the battle of 'Amegeddon' which will lead to the 'Salvation 'of Christians who follow HIS doctrine. Teh rest will remain to suffer the self fulfilling prophecy this crazed lunatic has brought upon mankind.
This is not only a SERIOUS national & Interantional Sercurity THREAT considering such followers and 'praisers' as Mac, Liebermann & Bush- and it appears Hillary in light of her 'Obliterate' slip.
Rev Wright was a sacrifical lamb, a Red herring, Mac KNEW EXACTLY WHO HE SOUGHT AN ENDORSEMENT FROM!It was not just seconds taken out of context- Hagee & parsley have EVERY SERMON,every time preaching Hate, Heresay and Destruction.
These 'Religious ' groups MUST be placed on OUR Terrorist Watch Lists!

Like McCain, God is pretty aged and must have required some extra help to accomplish the rather simple task of directing the Jews to Palestine. Like McCain, God lacked imagination, accounting for why the task was not accomplished in a more benign and creative way.

Pastor Strangelove Hagee wears $3,000 suits, has a large fleet of luxury cars, a huge home near San Antonio, and rakes in huge amounts of cash from his followers. He has most of his family on his church payroll, which is not open to public scrutiny. Pastor Strangelove is not really ready to move on to his just reward just yet. He is enjoying his earthly existance way too much. All of which is tax exempt !!!!!! All these so called preachers have found a way to collect huge amounts of money, tax free.

I would be much more impressed if he wandered the countryside in a sack cloth, and sandals. Like John the Baptist, or Jesus himself.

Organized religion is just a new shell game that benefits the very few, at the expense of everyone else.
