Chris Matthews Thinks Black Americans and College Grads Aren't "Regular People"

It’s hard to know where to start with something like this.

It was, of course, an incredibly odd thing to say. First, it’s not at all clear why we should “wonder” about someone who’s a bad bowler. And second, it certainly sounded as if Matthews — while getting “ethnic” — believes black people are necessarily good at basketball.

With this one under his belt, Matthews decided to dabble in some more bizarre racial talk again yesterday.

For those who can’t watch clips online, Matthews asked Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO): “Let me ask you about how he — how’s he connect with regular people? Does he? Or does he only appeal to people who come from the African-American community and from the people who have college or advanced degrees?”

It’s hard to know where to start with something like this.

Let’s see, what’s the most offensive angle here:

a) that Matthews makes a distinction between the African-American community and those with college degrees; or

b) that Matthews believes only whites with high school diplomas qualify as “regular people”?

And as long as we’re asking Matthews-related questions, here’s another: how does this guy stay on the air?

I know a lot of people want to watch clips but can’t from their work computers, so here’s the transcript of the relevant exchange, as per the fine folks at Media Matters. I’d just add that Matthews seemed rather nonchalant about what he was saying, as if it were perfectly reasonable.

MATTHEWS: Obama — that’s Senator Obama — has taken a different tone in Pennsylvania, where I’m at right now. He faces an aging blue-collar electorate, one of the oldest states. I think it’s the second oldest state, in terms of demographics. People want details about how he plans to improve their lives, keep their kids from moving out of the state, and creating jobs down the road for their grandkids. Can he win over working-class voters here in Pennsylvania? Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri is an Obama supporter. Senator McCaskill, did you advise Obama to go out and try to bowl the other day?

McCASKILL: Well, listen, I grew up in a small town where you learned to do two things: You learned to bowl and you learned to roller-skate. I can’t wait to challenge him to a game of bowling.

MATTHEWS: OK. Let me ask you about how he — how’s he connect with regular people? Does he? Or does he only appeal to people who come from the African-American community and from the people who have college or advanced degrees?

McCASKILL: You know, I think people forget about how well Barack Obama is thought of in southern Illinois. I know southern Illinois. They’re our neighboring state. They’re very much like the people in many parts of rural Missouri. These are working people, salt-of-the-earth people. And if these people of Pennsylvania will give him a chance and listen to him, I think they will be surprised how much they’ll relate to him, both as a leader and as a person.

Digg!

African Americans, advanced degreeholders -- mutually exclusive populations?

I wonder what NSBE would have to say about that -- or any number of other professional, scientific and scholarly organizations, for that matter.

Furthermore, neither are "regular people" and "advanced degree holders" mutually exclusive populations, although I suspect the degree of classism in elite institutions is just as strong as racism.

And they don't even know it.

But still, "regular people" -- sons and daughters of members of skilled trade unions, for example -- still go to college, and often earn advanced degrees. They might even experience some cognitive dissonance when they encounter elitist attitudes and observe privilege rewarding privilege, while hard work and actual achievement are pooh-poohed as too workmanlike an approach (until the privileged "born to rule" manipulators and users and managers actually need some work done, of course).

Hil's been trying to use the class resentment that this breeds to her own advantage, but can't seem to fool joe sixpack. Funny, that.

Those of us on the borders -- who truly belong to both worlds -- need to communicate outside our comfort zone.

Getting one family member at a time to turn off the Fox Noise machine is a start.

Point out the obvious: the economy and our military and our weekly gas bill and our monthly home heating fuel bill would be in much better shape if we hadn't a let George Bush piss away 3 trillion on Halliburton in Iraq.

Once again, Mathews proves he is an idiot of the first water.

I'm amazed that the impressive Senator from Missouri even had a chance to make any statements, as usually Matthews spends all his time interrupting guests with his conservative bias and blather.

He and Scarborough need to find a different job.

Let's cut him some slack, and use him as an example of the many in our country who are eqully disarranged. He obviously stopped maturing around the age of 12. That's part of his appeal. The Peter Pan of MSNBC

Him saying connecting with african americans and college grads as I saw it meant:

He is black and black americans connect with him. (Like women connect with Hillary because she is a woman.)

He is educated and college educated people will connect with him.

I did not see it as him saying those groups were mutually exclusive at all.

I do not watch his show, I do not find it interesting or educational. When candidates are popular he doesn't grill them on important issues. I could care less if he went off the air tomorrow never to be seen again.

But you guys just flat out hate the man and every time he speaks you try to twist his words into the most offensive meaning you can.

Foam coming from the mouth yet guys?

Chris Matthews yells too much and interrupts his guests constantly. He is biased and opinionated and always has been. I don't know how he stays on the air. I know he gets paid too much. Maybe he and Scarborough could start a company together? Maybe Called "Hot Air for the Masses"? We could all "Rush" to watch it. Matthews should be glad that Maddow shot down Joe and not him. He's a lucky guy, in that regard.
