Hillary's NAFTA Lies Kill All of Her Credibility on Trade

Posted by John Nichols, The Nation at 7:24 AM on March 22, 2008.

When it comes to the essential test of the trade debate, Clinton has been identified as a liar -- a put-in-boldface-type "L-I-A-R" liar.

Unfortunate Racial Talk Creeps Back into the Democratic Campaign
Steve Benen The Carpetbagger Report

What is the proper word for the claim by Hillary Clinton and the more factually disinclined supporters of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination -- made in speeches, briefings and interviews (including one by this reporter with the candidate) -- that she has always been a critic of the North American Free Trade Agreement?

Now that we know from the 11,000 pages of Clinton White House documents released this week that former First Lady was an ardent advocate for NAFTA; now that we know she held at least five meetings to strategize about how to win congressional approval of the deal; now that we know she was in the thick of the manuevering to block the efforts of labor, farm, environmental and human rights groups to get a better agreement. Now that we know all of this, how should we assess the claim that Hillary's heart has always beaten to a fair-trade rhythm?

Now that we know from official records of her time as First Lady that Clinton was the featured speaker at a closed-door session where 120 women opinion leaders were hectored to pressure their congressional representatives to approve NAFTA; now that we know from ABC News reporting on the session that "her remarks were totally pro-NAFTA" and that "there was no equivocation for her support for NAFTA at the time;" now that we have these details confirmed, what should we make of Clinton's campaign claim that she was never comfortable with the militant free-trade agenda that has cost the United States hundreds of thousands of union jobs, that has idled entire industries, that has saddled this country with record trade deficits, undermined the security of working families in the US and abroad, and has forced Mexican farmers off their land into an economic refugee status that ultimately forces them to cross the Rio Grande River in search of work?

As she campaigns now, Clinton says, "I have been a critic of NAFTA from the very beginning."

But the White House records confirm that this is not true.

Her statement is, to be precise, a lie.

When it comes to the essential test of the trade debate, Clinton has been identified as a liar -- a put-in-boldface-type "L-I-A-R" liar.

Those of us who covered the 1993 NAFTA debate have frequently expressed doubts about the former First Lady's recent statements. We never heard anything at the time about her dissenting from the Clinton Administration line on trade policy. And we knew that she had defended NAFTA in the years following its enactment. But fairness required that we at least entertain that notion--promoted by the lamentable David Gergen, himself a champion of free-trade policies while working in the Clinton White House--that Hillary Clinton had been a behind-the-scenes critic. We had to at least consider the possibility that, at the very least, Clinton had been worried that advancing NAFTA would trip up her advocacy for health care reform, that she had made her concerns known and that she had absented herself from pro-NAFTA lobbying.

This was certainly the impression that Clinton and her supporters sought to create as she campaigned in Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana--states where worried workers want to know exactly where the candidates have stood and currently stand with regard to trade issues.

But that impression was a deliberate deception.

And we must all now recognize that when Hillary Clinton speaks about trade policy, she begins with a lie so blatant--that she's been "a critic of NAFTA from the very beginning"--that everything else she says must be viewed as suspect.

Her job as First Lady was to advocate for her husband's policies, whether she agreed with them or not. None of this proves squat.

I was on an editorial board; I had to write in support of things with which I disagreed, but it was my job. Anyone who has ever held a management position has had to hold their nose and advocate for someone else's bad policy.

Gergen says she wasn't lying. Another unidentified source who worked for her told CNN she wasn't lying. Why isn't that not enough?

Or is that you simply don't care what you have to do to Clinton to push Obama?

Anyone who was paying attention in the early 1990's and not in high school or putting their heads in the sand, could not miss that HRC as well as her husband were pushing NAFTA. While this treaty started negotiations during the Bush 1 administration, it was finished by Clinton and signed by him, and shoved down the throats of the American people by him and his wife, as well as the Republicans. She may have been concerned about her health care initiative, the insurance industry that she advocates for was not effected by NAFTA, so she had no problem advocating for it all over the country. It just won her more corporate supporters for the future.

So, seeing this woman as the manipulative politician and opportunist that she is and always has been is some sort of surprise? What should be a surprise to this author is the fact that anyone over the age of 12 would have ever believed this woman in the first place!

How about and article on Sen. Obama's changing position on NAFTA?

From: The Obama Craze: Count Me Out by Matt Gonzalez‚ Feb. 27‚ 2008

Regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement, Obama recently boasted, “I don’t think NAFTA has been good for Americans, and I never have.” Yet, Calvin Woodward reviewed Obama’s record on NAFTA in a February 26, 2008 Associated Press article and found that comment to be misleading: “In his 2004 Senate campaign, Obama said the US should pursue more deals such as NAFTA, and argued more broadly that his opponent's call for tariffs would spark a trade war. AP reported then that the Illinois senator had spoken of enormous benefits having accrued to his state from NAFTA, while adding that he also called for more aggressive trade protections for US workers.”

Putting aside campaign rhetoric, when actually given an opportunity to protect workers from unfair trade agreements, Obama cast the deciding vote against an amendment to a September 2005 Commerce Appropriations Bill, proposed by North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan, that would have prohibited US trade negotiators from weakening US laws that provide safeguards from unfair foreign trade practices. The bill would have been a vital tool to combat the outsourcing of jobs to foreign workers and would have ended a common corporate practice known as “pole-vaulting” over regulations, which allows companies doing foreign business to avoid “right to organize,” “minimum wage,” and other worker protections.

For an organization that claims to not endorse political candidates, AlterNet certainly appears to have a blindingly obvious pro-Obama editorial policy.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

I'm in chicago and remember Barack's senate race vs Keyes in 2004 very well. Barack used his anti-NAFTA stance as a talking point for his campaign. He had flyers that actually said he wanted to reform NAFTA. Keyes had no opinion of this. He was more concerned with making sure Homosexuals knew they were going to hell.

Obama's Senate voting record stands speaks LOUDER!

Obama stated in senate voting records that he could not vote for these trading agreements in June 30, 2005 for CAFTA, a central america free trade agreement. He stated then he couldn't vote for them because of Illinois voters had told him it do him anygood to have a teeshirt that costs a $1 less if he didn't have a job! Obama voted "no" this time.

Then in June 29, 2006 the OMAN trade agreement, under the influence of probably Sen. Kerry he voted "yes" to this free trade agreement. This trade agreement was MUCH worse than NAFTA as it not only allowed Haliburton to move close to Iraq and not pay workers benefits like social security or unemployment benefits, but it also OPENED up our PORTS TO TERRORISTS! SO IS THIS GOOD JUDGEMENT????

I DON"T THINK SO!!! HE IS SWAYED BY THE PEOPLE HE IS ARROUND! KERRY WANTS HIM THERE SO HE CAN KEEP HIS WIFE"S BUSINESS IN BIG BUCKS!! She is worth 3.2 billion! KERRY DISHONEST!! Many of these free trade agreements are due to expire.

See this article about the FREE TRADE AGREEMENT OBAMA VOTED FOR.
F:Oman Another deeply flawed trade agreement.mht
Read this free trade agreement, then tell me how wonderful Obama is!!!!!

Please Wonderful God Loving American People!!! Hillary is all we have unless you want a republican? your choice, or Obama a supporter of an Anti-American who hates America and its people!: God Help us NO!!!HEAR HEAR HEAR

It’s not about racism!! This is what Obama would like you to think, in order to get his followers to move away about the real issue: MENTOR=A PERSON WHO INFLUENCES YOUR MIND, SOUL AND HART...SO DON'T TELL ME HE WAS NOT INFLUENCED!!!! that is why he can not denouce this man!!

Obama's MENTOR: Jeremiah Wright an Anti American-hates American and its people ( not blacks of course because he is the racist not the American people) who proclaims America has infected the people of Africa to hurt blacks, never mind that our hard earned tax dollars have been going to Africa by the millions. A man that proclaims America deserved the tragedy of 9/11. A man that tells his congregation they should not say God Bless America but God Damn America (A congregation that Obama was part of for Twenty years, that any decent loving Americans would have walked out the minute they heard this Anti American hatred)Shame on Obama for supporting this man for TWENTY YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And here we have Richardson jumping on the bandwagon of racism! He has thrown the Latinos right under the bus just like Obama has his grandmother (“The Typical White Grandmother" Obama's words)
Well I have news for Richardson, Latinos are not going to vote for a man that has had an Anti-American who hates America and proclaims anti-American Hatred, because Latinos love America and everyday we we give thanks to GOD for this wonderful beautiful nation under God...

How can you tell when Hillary is lying? Her lips move!

The candidates brought to the forefront of American attention by the corporate owned media are all CORPORATE OWNED!

The MSM doesn't mention the fact that Mike Gravel(D) and Ron Paul(R) are still running. Cynthia McKinney(G) is in the race, so is Ralph Nader(I), and Wayne Allen Root(L). They don't mention third party candidates at all.

Why?

They don't succumb to corporate interests. These are the candidates that will put the interests of American citizens first. If you would rather have our President favor corporations over citizens, keep watching the MSM circus, but if you would prefer your rights were respected before Corporate America, you should vote for one of the candidates that the MSM is neglecting.

If one of the candidates I have brought to your attention should be elected the wars will end promptly. The wars we are in are all about corporate profit. Profits for the Military-Industrial Complex, Big Oil Companies, Government Contractors and Mercenaries. These profits come at the expense of citizens. Citizens like you and me and the Iraqis and the Afghanis. Forget Clinton, Obama, and McCain! Vote for someone else. Do some research. Find the candidate that will best represent your interests. Don't think for a minute that the corporate owned media will give you a complete picture. When you realize the truth, share it with everyone else!

NAFTA. First, we can not stop working with the rest of the world in the age of technology. Second, President Clinton got the best deal he could get with a Congress that would not approve the rules that said other nations had to play by ours (labor, environment, etc.). Third, President Bush never followed up with working to add those rules to NAFTA. Third, Hillary will. Creating, debating and passing legislation is not as simple as many would like to portray it to be. No one gets exactly what they want, its how it works, but you can't vote present and you can't not hold hearings, you have to be a participant in the work and not just talk about the work. I am a supporter of Hillary's work style: Act, Reflect, and Change, as needed. If memory serves me correctly, not many were in favor of NAFTA as the perfect plan, but as one to be continued to work on. (Unfortunately, by the way, Al Gore would have done that, too, had the election process not been rigged when he ran for President!)

Senior Clinton Advisor: Role of the U.S. President is to Support Decisons Made by Israelis

Apparently Without Irony, Washington Post Says Jewish Advocates Demand that Obama Show 'Fealty to Israel'

The story continues: supporters of Israel are rising against Obama, there is a major push this week to destroy his candidacy. Today's Washington Post reports on a debate yesterday arranged by United Jewish Committees in D.C. among Jewish advocates for Hillary, Obama, and McCain. The debate became a rout, the Post columnist averred, in which the advocates for Hillary and McCain "used their time to raise doubts about Obama's fealty to Israel."

Fealty to Israel? They portrayed Obama as a dangerous leftwinger, and when the Illinois senator's surrogate defended Obama's statement that the U.S. does not have to cleave to Likud policies, Ann Lewis, Hillary's advocate, responded:

"The role of the president of the United States is to support the decisions that are made by the people of Israel.
It is not up to us to pick and choose from among the political parties."

Yup, sounds like fealty to me! What is there to say about such a statement? Horrifying. Likud has been against the peace process, against a Palestinian state, for the colonization of the West Bank. Do we have a foreign policy? Do we take sides on such matters? Do we take sides on minority rights in foreign countries? Are we the strongest country in the world, or do we get dragged around by racist biblical colonialists half a world away? What did we just do in Serbia and Kosovo--exercise our power to establish a Muslim state. But in this part of the world we have had no independent power to say what is right and wrong, for 60 years...

The columnist who wrote the piece is Dana Milbank, who in 2006 suggested that Walt and Mearsheimer are Nazis for talking about something called "the Israel lobby." When Milbank cites "fealty to Israel" and describes security guards with Israeli accents, it's hard to tell how ironic he is being. I think he is impish; and is trying himself to marginalize Obama without coming out and saying so.

This is bad news for Obama but maybe good for America. If Obama is going down on this issue, there will at last be, I vouchsafe, a robust debate over our Israel policy.

Obama Must Show "Fealty to Israel"

I don't agree with everything the Nation prints, particularly articles like this. That makes me a critic of the Nation. However since The Nation has some excellent unbiased articles, I continue to support it. Does that make me a L I A R?

If one knows the inevitable is going to happen, one does what he or she can to ease the pain. It is not unlike a Senator adding amendments to an undesirable proposed bill.

Senator Obama spoke against the Patriot Act but he voted for it. Sen. Obama did not vote to authorize the invasion of Iraq (nor did he vote against the resolution) but his subsequent votes have supported this continuing war crime. Does that make him a liar?

John Nichols owes Sen. Clinton and apology. So does the Nation.

Somewhere, there are 10,000 pencil pushers at work to define the specifics of the New American Century. The protocol makes Big Brother appear the kindly old uncle.
The monster raises his head from the murky depths rarely. Usually called NAFTA, he strikes terror into the hearts of the great unwashed [us]. It has gotten so bad that his recent manifestations are virtually a secret such as NSPD51.
NAFTA introduces slavery to three countries. Without habeas corpus and human rights liberty ends. What politician would publicly espouse that? What citizen would vote to be a slave?
To establish the European Union Codes, they sent the new laws in packets to the Parliament to be rubber-stamped without discussion.
The North Americans will get NAFTA in one big lump, as an accomplished fact.

...is an a$$, at best, and is the Repukes wet dream candidate. Not that Obama is much better.

I would suggest everyone here look hard at a third party choice in the event that the Democrapic choice turns out to be a warmed over Repukian.

For me, if the candidate is not a true progressive, they will not get my vote.
