Maher: "Obama Is the Jackie Robinson of Politics" [VIDEO]

Posted by Adam Howard, AlterNet at 12:03 PM on March 20, 2008.

Bill Maher says just like Robinson was when he broke the color barrier in baseball, Obama is expected to be perfect at all times and to offend no one.

Bill Maher, who admittedly is often an arrogant jackass, does makes some excellent observations about the Democrats, Obama, McCain, race and the War in Iraq in this interview with Chris Matthews. Maher compares Obama to Jackie Robinson, because just like Robinson was when he broke the color barrier in baseball, Obama is held up to such a higher standard. He must appear flawless in a way that no white candidate would be expected to be. Would Obama's experience or patriotism be as obsessively attacked as it is if he weren't Black? I don't think so.

He also says what I think a lot of progressives are afraid of--"that we're one terrorist attack away from John McCain rising in the polls by ten points" because he's perceived as "tougher". But Maher correctly states that "McCain is not the toughest on Iraq, he's the dumbest."

I agree most with Maher when says while he loved Obama's speech on race, he's embarrassed that he needed to make it. Why are White Americans always "surprised" to learn that racism still exists in America? Chris Matthews is bizarre throughout the segment, completely losing it and giggling uncontrollably when he brings up the O'Reilly/Harlem restaurant incident. At least Maher gets a chance to say "corporations have taken over America" on a network owned by GE. Always nice to see. Check out the video to your right for more.

hardly perfect.
a pull-out of an illegal occupation that leaves the green zone intact, and possibly protected by as many as 40,000 blackwater mercenaries?
I don't think Jackie Robinson would have supported a racist war, or reserved the right to spend your tax dollars on mercenaries to fight that war... watch alternets own posting about this here: Obama reserves the right to maintain mercenaries
i don't know but i doubt jackie would have shown stalwart support for an apartied regiem like israel (that would be odd)...
loved that part in his speech where he says it would be wrong to blame israel and the 40+ years of apartied occupation, because the whole problem emminates from them extreme fundamentalists they have over there (kinda sounds like bush)...

jackie robinson. that's a laugh!I don't think Maher can see past the color of Obama's skin.
you know, come to think of it, Mahers posting on Huffington "Sunni versus Suri" using Sunnis as the punchline for Tom Cruise jokes, was kinda sick when ya think about the genocide going on. Prolly wouldn't have been funny making jokes like "jew versus jellybeans" in nazi germany either, but i guess times have changed...

Am I the only one who finds that gasbag Chris Matthews totally intolerable? It seems he can't ask anyone a question without going on for three paragraphs. Here he has a comedian on and he thinks he's the one who's supposed to be telling the jokes? He just make me want to throw stuff at the TV. I know he's supposed to be steeped in political history or something, but he is just awful at interviews or pretty much any time he opens his pompous mouth.

Why is NBC so enamored with this guy? I assume he gets ratings, but I can't imagine why or how. Furthermore, he claims that Hillary Clinton's political career is entirely based on her husband's infidelity and is totally unpenalized. Meanwhile David Schuster is basically run off their network for blurting "pimped out." I don't get it.

Yea, I had a relative call Obama an "empty suit" that is unqualified, lacks experience. It pissed me off and I told him he's wrong. Sadly, some people are Republicans and they will be Republicans no matter what. Assholes. But, the Jackie Robinson analogy is perfect. I'll use it next time a Clintonite or Repug comes at me with their noise and inane bullshit.

Oh really? And, when did he come to Canada to make it in the minor leagues because the the major leagues would not let him play alongside his teammates?

And, why does everyone -- it seems -- ignore the fact he is a blend of black and white culture? He is more like a Pierre Trudeau for US Americans in that regard.

Adam Howard's article brings to mind Lloyd Bentzen's famous reply to Dan Quayle "You are no Jack Kennedy". The likeness of Jackie Robinson and Sen. Obama is little other than gender and race. Robinson proved his worth by his actions on and off the field, not by his words.

Senator Obama had walked the finest of lines until this Rev. Wright mess. It's funny how other groups can identify with their cultural heritage.

But a black candidate can not. When and if he does, he's quickly labeled the candidate of race. Folks get scared.

This guilt by association is downright rediculous! Senator McCain has actively sought out the endoresments of evangelicals that have made awful statements about groups of people...ie, Rod Parsely and John Haggee to name a couple.

No one asked Mitt Romney to leave the Morman Church, although they had some policies that discriminated agains Blacks.

How many members of Congress and the Senate belong to the Catholic church? Have they been asked to leave the church with all these revalations about pedophiles in the highest levels?

Has anyone denounce the Pope for shifting Priest who have settled lawsuits regarding sexual abuse of members?

If everyone running for office is responsible for things their associates say or do then where is what should be widespread demands for denounciations?!
