Al Franken was a very well received guest on the David Letterman Show last night, where he showed what a lovable, big hearted guy he is but also that he a confident, serious politician as well. He talks about his ever increasing chances of being the Democratic nominee for Senate in Minnesota, why he thinks he'll beat Norm Coleman and why he believes progressive values appear to be trumping right wing spin in this election. He also gives a moving tribute to his fourth grade teacher who he's featuring in campaign ads (one of which an enthusiastic Letterman allows him to show uncut!) and uses it to discuss the flaws of No Child Left Behind. Check out the video to your right for more.

after 28 years of conservative rule. It always does. I liken this time in history to what happened in the early 1900s. There was a Progressive Movement then, too. It accomplished a great deal - stripping the robber-barons of their power, ending monopolies, giving power to workers through strong unions, giving women the vote, etc.

IF Obama is elected president, perhaps there's a chance at a new Progressive Movement. IF Clinton is elected, it will be more of the same, as she is a neo-liberal, the same as her husband was, and is more likely to stick with the same shit we have now.

New Progressives are winning congressional races in the primaries, like Donna Edwards in Maryland. Al Franken is another example - he will likely win the Democratic primary for the Senate seat, and would probably beat Norm Coleman in the general election in Minnesota. There will be inroads in this election, but a Progressive Majority? As much as I'd like to see it, I won't believe it until they prove it to me. I think the country is ready for it, but, unfortunately, I don't think we have the candidates in place for this particular election. Perhaps two years from now. If we last that long.

I think he should stick to comedy

From what I understand, he supported the Iraq war initially, saying he believed Colin Powell. This strikes me as absurd. I'm just a social worker in Canton, Ohio and I could see that we didn't need to invade Iraq. So why didn't Al Franken, who is supposed to be a political sophisticate, have the judgement to know that this war was and is a sham? It looks to me as though he just enjoys the celebrity that comes along with running for office. But hey...he is funny.

Franken may be better than Norm Coleman, but he is a Zionist supporter of Israel, and will not be an impartial player when it comes to dealing with our problems in the region. He will be another total tool of the AIPAC/Zionist lobby, and fully in bed with those who continue to oppress the greatly wronged Palestinian people. I really despair that we will ever get any highly visible progressive to speak the truth about Israel's illegitimate oppression of the original and true owners of the land they occupy.
