Last night on MSNBC's Live with Dan Abrams, guests Pat Buchanan, Rachel Maddow, and Keli Goff discussed the role of race in Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Buchanan suggested Obama is winning the black vote simply because he is black. Goff countered that Obama has won states that have small populations of African-Americans. As Goff spoke, Buchanan grew more agitated, ultimately lashing out. "Shut up for a second please!" Buchanan yelled.

"Pat, I've been on TV with you a million times," Maddow said to Buchanan. "I've never heard you tell anyone to shut up before. That was absolutely, completely ridiculous of you."

race and politics.

nothing changes.

and people are still astonished as though this were the first instance of race influencing voter politics and also seem to think this is a most important argument in this current campaign. stupid 'mericans. race isn't competency (see footnote under GWB et al).

I watched that exchange. This report is incredible hyperbole. the fact was he was trying to get a word in edge wise and she would not let him get his words out. he grew frusttaed and told her to shut up for a minute.

I don't like Pat Bucchanan, but come on, let's be more accurate in reporting.

...what I didn't like was the thesis that Obama is winning the black vote because he's black and that that's why he's ahead. The fact is that in many of the states he won he carried all of the demographics and won many states without sizable numbers of black voters. Buch was cherry picking his facts by raising the SC primary, and his opponent was not letting him get away with it, so he got po'd. Typical, but hardly surprising. You notice he had no response when Madow asked him how his central thesis explained Utah.

Personally, I don't need anymore convincing that Buch is both a racist and an idiot, even though this case itself might be arguable.

Buchanan is a gentlemen and is sick and tired of being pushed around by
idiots. Besides all that he was correct. Obama started the whole race card thing when he started quoting Martin Luther King Jr. Remember? You reap what you sow.

I saw the exchange too but had a little different take on it. Pat is very used to taking center stage on issues and he dearly loves to pontificate about the democrats and it seems he takes great pleasure in "tweaking" an issue that will make the republicans look so much more above the fray. He finally ran up against someone who was not intimidated and who could get in his face point by point and he bacame totally frustrated. You could say the same thing about Joe Scarborough who is also an avowed republican and though he tries very hard to live up to the "No body owns me...", no one will ever make me believe that he isn't enjoying and causing the democratic fire to rage on.

Obama is NOT black.
Why does 50% black and 50% white = Black?
I'm going to paraphrase a comment made by Bill Cosby.
If a pie is half apple and half peach what kind of pie is it?
Race is such a NON issue... why are we even discussing this in the 21st century?
Peach or Apple... you be the judge.

she interrupted him and he got impatient and Rachel Maddow tried to make something out of it. There is less here than meets the eye (and ear).

TV shouting matches are not the same thing as debates. I knew better at about age 6; WTH is wrong with these people?

I'm wondering why we don't all shut off our television sets and give the media a message that we're no longer willing to listen to anyone tell us what so and so said and what they meant by what they said. Let's insist that they start by giving us the news. Then we can talk about the real news and we can decide for ourselves what we think about it! Good idea???

I've grown tired of listening to Pat Buchanan, Keith Olberman, Dan Abrams, Wolf Blitzer, or any number of others tell me what I think about anything. I want to hear news. The airwaves belong to us! Enough of this silly s---! Let's hear the real news. Let's hear about Iraq, Afghanistan, the economy, the Winter Soldiers, the Veterans and how they are being cared for now...the list is endless. Let's hear about the courageous men and women who are still giving their lives because they believe they are doing what their country asks of them! Then, let's insist that our favorite people running for office, Clinton and Obama start talking about the issues too. Then they can take on McCain. Please, let's make the media accountable! They have a responsibility to us!!!

I like him better than a lot of so-called "liberals" on TV. But I'm not into cultural Left identity politics too much, so I have the ability to listen to a very flawed old school conservative and not flip out. I'm "empowered" by my ignoring p.c. liberal sensitivities towards old fart whities like Buchanan and then I can enjoy listening to his criticisms of neo-cons, Bush, and corporate America. He can actually be pretty good on those things as can many Libertarians.

The MSM loves it when "politics turn nasty" and discussions degenerate into yelling matches and name calling. They are in the business of ratings, not information, which is why anyone who acts like a provocative asshole can get a show on the MSM. It's "the news" meets MTV. But at least with MTV you know you are watching crap, as opposed to the MSM.

...and all the thoughtless ninnies are falling for it.

Conclusion? Pat Buchanan is a right-wing distraction from the issues that Real Patriots would find important.
