Did You Know Obama Is Black? Not That There's Anything Wrong with That! [VIDEO]

Posted by Adam Howard, AlterNet at 4:40 AM on March 12, 2008.

A parody of the Clinton campaign's not so subtle attempts to inject race into the presidential race.

First there was Bill Clinton's obnoxious attempt to trivialize Obama's South Carolina victory by pointing out that Jesse Jackson, another black man, had managed the same feat in '84 and '88. Meaning, I guess, that if one black man accomplishes something we all can. Then there was the campaign ad where the Clinton campaign allegedly darkened Obama's skin tone. But few of their race card games have been as offensive and intellectually bankrupt as campaign fundraiser Geraldine Ferraro's claim that he wouldn't be where he is in the Democratic nomination fight if he wasn't black.

Excuse me? He's a black man, whose middle name is Hussein...the fact that he's the frontrunner of the Democratic nomination is both shocking and improbable. I think if he was a white guy, with a different, less smearable name, but with the same rhetoric he'd been having a much easier time. There is certainly a lot about Barack Obama and his campaign worth criticizing, but to their credit I have never seen them try to emphasize Hillary's gender in order to diminish her or win some sort of political points. And I'm sorry the "he'll face even worse from the GOP in general election" argument just doesn't work for me when it comes to this. I expect more from a Democrat in a primary race. I want to see distinctions drawn but not old-school racial politics. Check out the video to your right for a humorous take on this issue.

Ms. Ferraro is simply clarifying for the ethnically undereducated and racially inexperienced voters in PA, that it's a politically engineered and muddied perception that Senator Obama is firstly an intelligent, articulate and engaging candidate who's finding a disturbing breadth of support, but which has obscured the dark reality of his ebonian, conspiratorial opportunism.

Thanks for clearing that up, Geraldine!

That there's a website called factcheck.org that has found the hysterical claims that the video ad is a racist attack to be unsubstantiated? If you can stand to actually face the facts, go to the website and see for yourself.

wouldn't be where she is if she wasn't Bill Clinton's wife.

There! I've used gender against Hillary!

P.S. I'm a female!

it's not that he's "black," that would be "bad" for him. it's that he's "exotic," a fantastical narrative to most people; and this is an ancient fetish embedded in most "western" psyches.

in my opinion, the real issue is not that he's black or white or biracial, it's that he's gorgeous. the fact that he is so attractive ameliorates, in many eyes, the fear of foreignness, and turns it into a romance.

there is NO WAY he would be where he is if he wasn't so attractive. can you imagine an UGLY Barack Obama--short and pock-marked--rising to media stardom and celebrity? how would that happen? on his exemplary merits and political accolades?

could we be truly inspired by a shorter, blacker figure with a squeaky alto, rather than a soothing, pensive baritone, even if he was saying the same things he's saying now?

mania, a crush, needs beauty. it breeds from and feeds off of eros. and in obama's case this eros can be attributed, to a degree, to the exoticism of the non-threatening otherness so many americans are so proud to embrace.

You can tell by Clinton's "er...ah...um....hmmm" response.

To most people it's incredible that something that stupid could pass for a campaign tactic. Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton and the apes (no racial or ethnic slur intended, although I do categorically believe that animals are less able to hold office than humans) who run her campaign are now and have always been tone deaf, blind to their own faults and easily the most aggravated, foam-at-the-mouth pit bulls in politics. (In short, MONSTERS! MWAHAHAHAAAA!)

You see the video attached to this article? I had to think some before I realized it was a joke. You guys in Penssylvania--watch for something like it to appear for real. It would go right along with Ferraro's calculated asininity.

What does this say about the high esteem the people of Pennsylvania enjoy inside the Clinton camp?

Would it be fair to say she thinks you're all a little dim?

are fine women. How sad. They turn out to be shrieking, racist vultures. Be gone, damn fools. I hope Barack Obama mows you both down quickly. I could never understand how Hillary could stay with "that fool". Now I know. He got her name on the map. If she's smart she will dump him as soon as the democratic primary is settled in Obama's favor.

Giving women a bad name

First off, it's OK for me to say this, I'm female. I once admired Hillary, and I felt empathy for her during those "blue dress" days. I felt she was unfairly treated for her efforts to bring universal health care to America in the nineties, and I respected her brains and could clearly see what a capable person she was. However, a lot has happened. She has clearly grown (if that is the proper verb) into her new role as aspiring commander-in-chief. She has become the very thing she was probably fighting against in her youth. She is owned by the lobbies, and she knows on what side the bread is buttered. She is not a beacon for peace, she voted for W's war, and she won't admit that she was wrong -- perhaps because she knew exactly what she was voting for and her vote reflects her true position. She will clearly say whatever it takes to get elected, she'll run an unscrupulous, deceitful campaign in order to win -- no matter what the cost. And Geraldine? She is admitting she was only qualified to be VP (had Mondale won) because she has a vagina?

Ferraro is an effing loon.

Tonight, Keith Olbermann gave them both a tongue-lashing they wouldn't forget if, that is, they both weren't deaf when it comes to their own behavior.

Twenty years ago, Ferraro said that ”because of his “radical” views, “if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn’t be in the race.”.

What a bankrupt campaign.
