Samantha Power Speaks Out on "Monster" Controversy [VIDEO]

Samantha Power speaks out to Irish news outlet RTE:

Of course I regret them, I can't even believe they came out of my mouth. The campaign was getting very tense, and I -- in every public appearance I've ever made talking about Senator Clinton, I have sung her praises as the leader she's been, the intellect. She's also incredibly warm, funny. I've spent time with her. I think that I just had a very weak moment in seeing some of the tactics, it seems, that were getting employed. I was just afraid really that the campaign would not stay at the level it had been on and I let out in a wave of frustration.

UPDATE: Obama supporter and former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski disagrees with Power's decision to resign: "I think an expression of regret for using an inappropriate description of Senator Clinton should have sufficed. And I don't think she should have resigned."

UPDATE: Sam Stein has written about the story of Power's rise --and subsequent fall -- in the political arena:

That Obama could bring her on board -- he was, Power said, the first government official to have ever called her -- was emblematic of the different style of politics that the Illinois senator was promising to represent. Far from a down-the-line liberal on international affairs, Power was known for her innovative (if not self-reflectively painful) analysis. On the Rwanda genocide, she concluded that U.S. officials had worked to ignore the problem, not failed to address it. On the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, she once advocated (though later recanted) spending billions of dollars and sending a military force to help create a Palestinian state next to Israel.

The whole piece is worth a read.

One woman makes a comment and gets fired while Hagee is on another channel telling the world how he hates everyone and nothing happens. And they both have a connection to a presidential candidate. I guess McCain doesn't mind or agrees with it. ANNA

i agree that she was an interesting woman, pushing boundaries that need to be pushed, but as i understand it, her research into US collusion into genocide seems a little weak.

the darfur situation, the rawandan situation, seem to be explained as willful ignorance, but if one wants to look into american participation in genocide, one must examine the US governments support of the khmer rouge in the 70's and 80's, and the sanctions against iraq.

In the 70s after the US lost the war in vietnam, they turned to the khmer rouge as the only force stupid enough to fight the vietnamese, which they did twice by attacking vietnam, until they finally were defeated in a month by the invading vietnamese army.

the US gov't then helped the khmer rouge gain a seat at the UN, which allowed them to build a military from the refugee camps that had been set up to house victims of the khmer rouge (that's right, the US turned over the victims of a genocide to those who had purpotrated the crime, for the purposes of destabilizing vietnam)...

so in my opinion, her research on the subject does not really delve deep enough into US participation in genocide.

if u want to know more about the US involvement in the cambodian genocide, read "getting away with genocide"

was that she's just not "media saavy" and she made her statement, and THEN said it was "off the record." Too late! It was already said! So the press runs with it.

She basically made a true statement and lost her job for it. What a shame. She would be helpful to Obama on Foreign Policy issues. But it's my guess she will still consult with him behind the scenes.

Hillary didn't get Powers fired. It's so interesting that some of you find it necessary to blame her for this! Where's the logic?

Academia and politics

Academia and politics dont mix well, as proved by Bill Clinton's doomed appointment of Lani Guinier. Academics are encouraged to be blunt and cutting-edge. Politicians can't be. A modest US intervention in Somalia produced a huge domestic backlash, as did Reagan's intervention in Beirut. Maybe Barack Obama is some remarkably courageous man who would do the right thing and say consequences be damned. But his record as a legislator suggests otherwise. Politicians are risk averse. All of them.

is, apparently, not the best policy. Being frank is fatal in politics. While Samantha Power may not have exercised the greatest finesse, I hear the message. It is clear to this outside observer that Hillary Clinton will say, and probably will do, anything to become president. Be afraid, be very afraid.

I too have completely lost any respect that I had for Hillary.
