Why Are the Polls Going Against Hillary?

Posted by Steven Reynolds, The All Spin Zone at 12:56 PM on February 3, 2008.

The question here is whether this is an Obama surge or a result of policy and endorsements for Hillary.

Things are tightening up leading to Super Tuesday in the Democratic primaries. There's several story lines we can follow, too. California, healthcare, Ann Coulter. Man, those are three disparate issues, aren't they?

The polls are going against Hillary. She's held a national lead in the polls but today those same national polls are showing a statistical dead heat with Barack Obama. Wow! That's a huge gain for Obama in a very short time. In California the same story is being told, a huge Clinton lead melting into a statistical dead heat. Wow! The question here is whether this is an Obama surge or a result of policy and endorsements for Hillary.

There's no question that Barack Obama has a good bit of the big Mo. Obama won in South Carolina, and Obama has those big endorsements from the Kennedys. But I gotta wonder if Hillary's actions and endorsements are moving the electorate both across the country and in California.

The first big thing is that the only contentious issue in the last Democratic debate is starting to play out. On healthcare Barack Obama suggested that Hillary was going to have to punish people if they did not sign on to her plan. Today it looks like she's planning to garnish wages in order to get people to comply. I'm willing to say this is a very difficult issue that's going to have some real sacrifice on the part of some people in this country, but Hillary advocating the garnishing of wages will not help her at all. Here it is from the AP wire:

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she might be willing to garnish the wages of workers who refuse to buy health insurance to achieve coverage for all Americans.

The New York senator has criticized presidential rival Barack Obama for pushing a health plan that would not require universal coverage. Clinton has not always specified the enforcement measures she would embrace, but when pressed on ABC's "This Week," she said: "I think there are a number of mechanisms" that are possible, including "going after people's wages, automatic enrollment."

Clinton said such measures would apply only to workers who can afford health coverage but refuse to buy it, which puts undue pressure on hospitals and emergency rooms.

Again, it isn't that her plan doesn't have merit, but Hillary Clinton needs to be honest here and note that it will take some sacrifices. Leaks like this, without that signal, are not doing her any good. But that's not the only thing that's hampering her. It looks like the rabid folks on the other side are eager for her candidacy, and when the banshee of the right backs you, that means votes for Obama. Ann Coulter's backing of Hillary, as we mentioned a couple days ago, whether we can trust the emmissary of evil or not, is not doing good things for Hillary getting votes.

I think the key is while people want a strong Democrat candidate, they don't want a ruthless one. The Clinton campaign tactics have tarnished Bill and made Hillary appear less likeable. Now she can no longer lean on Bill as much, and so some of her soft support is eroding.

She has not voted in the best interest of the American working class tax payer. She has taken far to much money from Corp. America. We do not need more of the same old politics in this country. We do need a Big time change and she is not the person for the job. Ann Coulter should go back under that rock she's been hiding under before someone steps on her head. If Ann is for Hilary the Queen of evil is up to no good. Because she is a liar and evil. The new Natzi Barbie doll by Fox news.

Why does she just not propose doing it the way every civilized country does. Fund it through the tax system. Or is that too "socialistic" for the democrats. A simple idea from a Prairie Baptist preacher named Tommy Douglas (voted the Greatest Canadian).

She is declining because most americans are stupid past understanding. If you doubt me, check out the Electoral College. It was based on our forefathers (and WHERE are the foremothers???) opinion that "The masses are asses."

Are you aware that regardless of the popular vote AND the number of delegates, the electoral college is free to ignore the above and give us anyone?

No. I thought not.

The reason she will support Billary is not because she's a closet Democrat, but because Billary is a closet Republican.

Let Me Spell It Out
DLC=Corporatist Republican
Blue Tick Democrat=Corporatist Republican + Evangelical Republican
Reagan Democrat=Republican
Clinton of any stripe=Republican

Questions?

It doesn't matter much who gets the nomination now. Clinton and Obama are the flawed candidates that the corporate media preferred.

I note that John Edwards "suspended" his campaigning. Events may yet make him the nominee.

If not, could he be persuaded to run as an independent I wonder.

Anyone want to set up a petition to be delivered to the convention stating that if Clinton or Obama is the nominee, we will not support the ticket?

I'm still awaiting the long-anticipated, rumored run by the best candidate (who's not a candidate), NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

He would bring smarts, class, fiscal responsibility and independent thinking to a race that has no acceptable candidates.

We know too much about Hillary, John and Mitt and not enough about Obama (except for his oratory and dreams that seem out of sync with the realities of trying to work with Congress).

C'mon, Michael, if you happen by some vague chance to be among us, blogging on AlterNet, step up. You've got my vote.

When are elected officials on the national level even congressmen not too busy to address matters of voters, in any detailed manner?

If they address issues it is superficially as it suits them:

Where are the real feelings emotions behind those masks?
Who knows!

Who really knows why Hillary Clinton is doing less well, is that the real issue? I think not.

For the most part I am an independent Democrat, my day has come and gone who cares what I say think breathe? They merely hassle me for a $10 plus contribution while I suffer at home day after day alone in my misery.

I may vote Democratic running in November, or if not Socialist.

But: How many people really love any of the candidates (especially the major parties)? Not many they are a small minority. We are told to vote, when those votes are mere formalities where billionaires finance and control these circuses.

Ok this one says this that one says that this endorsement that but ask people the question: But how will they feel and how much will it really change if any of their favorite candidates don't win?

Not much that is how bad it all is. For the most part left right center extreme right extreme left old circus is all the same story. Most people don't vote a culture exists where it all doesn't really matter.

Numbers mean nothing as candidates are so often close that the slightest changes can swing large numbers of votes of voters like cattle being lead to the slaughter feed a steady diet of superficial BS.

Republicans often have made it more difficult to vote, harder and harder all the time, bosses, family, responsibilities, all that makes it hard when people have finite energy in a corrupt and unfair system that demands it all.

Of the minority who votes the majority are independents (whose candidates will not get elected because of obstacles protecting incumbents) who can't stand the status quo.

Then ask compared to those who do support candidates most don't like any on them 100% because when elected officials often don't read or understand the complexity and difficulty of issues, as is evidenced by Congress passing the Homeland Security Act without reading all of it.

So presentations trying to get our interest are invented fictions to interest us when in actuality it is a farce no one understands that resolves nothing in any great part.

It is time for change but how, for so many years American people has been hand feed quick easy scenarios when the whole system has to be investigated for its oppressive corruption.

All advertising should be banned, or limited severely no TV no radio No Internet ads no blogs. Elections should be based on real community organizations of real people, not these hired rent-a-votes Republicrats and Rent-a-Democans use that proliferate the major parties and the small parties sometimes.

Where political parties and candidates care more care about raising money, than how it is spent. If all political advertising is stopped, corruption of the media (will be reduced not eliminated because the media, are profit driven machines, conservative organizations doing business nothing more, as the masses have become solely followers to be swayed, in a system of constituent politics where the principles do not matter, where elected officials are beholden to contributors and special interests.

None of the major political parties rely on involving people they involve money because money is easy, so they reduce people to numbers, as in actuality they are afraid of people,

I can't figure out why people are shocked that Hillary will "force" people to pay into the health care program thru automatic deductions from their paychecks. Isn't this a payroll tax? Isn't this what most of us progressives want - a healthcare system that is paid for by all of us, rather than a system that's tied to our jobs and available at the mercy of our employers?

I have several problems with Hillary, but this certainly is NOT one of them.

In fact, I think this is one of the few areas where she is stronger than Obama. Everyone needs health insurance (the way most states mandate car insurance) so that the taxpayers don't get stiffed when folks get their health care in the emergency room. (When in too many cases it's too late)

How Can You Ignore the "Backlash-Against-Bubba" Factor?
Posted by: SkeeterVT1 on Feb 4, 2008 10:02 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I can't believe you chose to ignore the single BIGGEST reason for the sharp turnaround in the fortunes of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

How can you possibly ignore the HUGE backlash against "Bubba" -- former President Bill Clinton -- following his highly insensitive, racially-charged slams against Obama in the South Carolina primary?

Bill Clinton exposed himself as having a hot-and-heavy personal desire to return to the White House. And that. in turn, kicked up deep fears among Democrats -- especially young people who are solidly backing Obama -- that Hillary's election would mean a return to the slash-and-burn politics of personal destruction that marked both the Clinton White House and their Republican adversaries.

This is precisely the kind of politics that Obama has railed against. Not to mention the fact that Bill's big mouth angered many African-American voters, even many who were initially leaning toward Hillary.

Even I, a blogger who's an independent but who has traditionally voted for Democrats, was angered enough by "Bubba's" attacks on Obama to write in my blog four blunt words that I aimed directly at the former president:

"SHUT THE [BLEEP] UP!"

I warned in my blog -- and Hillary now acknowledges -- that Bill's foot-in-mouth disease could cost her the Democratic nomination. On the eve of Super Tuesday as I write this comment, that possibility has a greater and greater chance of becoming reality.

Wow! That would mean I have a job. But I am sick today. I live in rural Oregon 60 miles from the nearest doctor. My husband is ill, too, but he has Medicare and has seen a doctor. Insurance is no guarrantee to real health care. Look at the people dying because they HAVE insurance. BTW, did anyone notice that bu$h wants to cut Medicare and rural health care by billions over the next 5 years? His solution to the health care emergency is to kill the old and disabled. Problem solved. Will Hillary or Obama do any better?

Illness care in America
Posted by: kerttu on Feb 4, 2008 3:01 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I agree with Obama. People should have the option to participate in the illness care program or not.
The reinforcement attempts alone in Hillary's plan would cost as much as paying for the illness care for un-insured.

Think about todays young people. They take good care of themselfs and are truely interested in preventive health care.
Quite a considerable number believe in alternative health care.
Would the mandatory illness care cover other than conventional medicine?
Would it provide preventive Health care?
Would it cover dental care?
The young already have two mandatory insurances to pay: carinsurance and social security insurance. Now Hillary wants to burden them with a third and propably most expencive mandatory insurance .
They are already being paid much less than their parents were paid in their age and how much more do they have to pay once the Iraq war cost is due!

The Only change Obama will bring is that he will be the frist African American Puppet President. He will be lead becasue of his inexperience, there is no doubt about this.i WOULD NOT BE SAYING THIS IF HE HAD THE EXPERIENCE TO IMPROVE MY LIFE WITH A BETTER ECONOMY. HOWEVE RYOU NEED EXPERIENCE TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
Everyone knows this, and we should not be blinded by this. If we want to vote for Obama we can not vote blindly! We know who Hillary is we do not know who Obama is, all we know is that he gives great speeches.and makes promise of hope and change. Has he told us how he is going to do this? Is he going to do it like he said he did it in Illinois with the Nuclear issues? READ NY TIMES; NUCLEAR LEAKS RESPONSE TESTED OBAMA-AT THE RISK OF NUCLEAR LEAKS AND THEN TAKING THEIR MONEY...READ THE ARTICLE. BUT IF YOU DON'T CARE THEN GO AHEAD..ALL I AM SAYING IS VOTE FOR YOU! VOTE FOR YOUR FAMILY AND THIS IS VOTING FOR THE PERSON THAT YOU YOURSELF THINK MAY IMPROVE THE ECONOMY!!!

POLLs are media Neocon planted persueders

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I believe all voting, through out the country, sould be at one time and no cacauses. Stop the bipartisant influences by letting Americans vote together and not as from seperate leagues like football.
Politics does more to divide the country than bring it together. (Especially when the truth is spun to dizzying heights)

I don't think people reaslize how much undertowing power the neocon machine muscles.

All the repubrs have declared virtual war on the Clintons. Romney for one just recently and repeatedly has said "...DOn't want Clinton in office again".

Sidebar: Why is it Kenneth Starr doesn't take on the Pirate Bush for destroying America and Iraq? But a little sexual misconduct is more impeachable than war crimes?

This country needs the balance of a matriarchial president. Since before the beginning of this country, men have wheeled their domination without reverence, as they declare their privleged right to control and ....

The neocons do support, in the primaries, Obama because they loath Bill Clinton so much. He was the "not-suppose-to win" President. The very thought of Him back in office scares the living shit out of them. But they also know that in order for democrats to be in control of the government, executive, legislative and judicial branches the dems need switch voters from the republican side.

They also know if Obama wins the primaries for Dems. it will backfire on Dems. in the national election. Switch voters will less than likely vote in a blackman. For those in the younger genration in California with more liberal "feelings" Obama is a delicious break from same-ol-same-old political game. But the younger generations, of which most havn't had the experience of freedom to move around the country as older ones have, don't realize the deep under-tow of prejudice that runs through the blood of America. ( n I hope I am totally wrong).

But If Omama wins the primary Dems could lose the National.

The polls are strategicly displayed to eliminate votes. This is not a football game, but the media presents it as one.
Issues are not important in polls only rhetoric and stage appearance. People vote parties or looks, not issues because most haven't got a clue how they are being lead down the primrose path by the Corporate Military industrial complex powers.

"Change" of management is more important than change of faces.
But if none of them vote to impeach Bush and his regime everything is deception as usual. Change here is a shape-shifter.

Because my candidate was excluded, Kucinich, I voted out of spite! I vote Hillary not because I approve so much of her but just to piss off Romney and McCain and all the neocons.
