Jim Hightower: Republicans Want to Put Reagan on Rushmore [VIDEO]

The real Reagan certainly doesn't deserve the heights of Rushmore, but neither did he fall to the depth of today's extremists who claim his image.

I must admit that the seven-year reign of Bush & Company makes me yearn for the years of Ronald Reagan, when the term "conservative" merely meant right wing, rather than full-tilt, bull-goose loopy.

Still, let's not get our national memory so warped that we put "The Gipper" on a pedestal, as today's far-right ideologues want to do. Bad enough that they keep trying to stick Reagan's name on public facilities all across America (apparently oblivious to the irony of naming these things for the guy who claimed to hate government) - but now they're pushing to put his mug on Mount Rushmore. I kid you not! One website even offers a retouched photo of Rushmore that superimposes Ronnie's likeness onto the mountaintop, right alongside Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lincoln.

Even more hilarious is the scramble by this year's GOP presidential contenders to one-up each other in their claim to be the New Reagan. This is a hoot, because if Reagan was running today, the ideologically-correct voters who control the Republican primary elections would savage him for his record on practically every hot-button issue.

Start with abortion. As governor of California in 1967, Reagan-the-Conservative-Icon signed a law allowing abortions six years before the U.S. Supreme Court legalized them in the Roe v. Wade decision. How about taxes? Reagan signed a billion-dollar tax increase in California and later signed several tax hikes as president. And, ooooo, looky here: in 1986, Reagan signed a national law giving amnesty to illegal immigrants. With stands like these, the beloved Gipper would be running behind Duncan Hunter in today's Republican race!

This is Jim Hightower saying... The real Reagan certainly doesn't deserve the heights of Mount Rushmore, but neither did he fall to the depth of today's extremist who're trying to claim his image.

Digg!

What's another stone face, more or less?

Renaming Mt. Clay in New Hampshire after him -- that was a real desecration.

I'm so sick of this Reagan shit I could PUKE. Reagan was one of the most dracnoian, authoritarian assholes ever. Sure less biz regs for his cozy rich friends, much more government invasion into personal life. Reagan, FUCK YOU. Ever since that idiot said to Gorbachev, with a straight face, that Dostoevsky was "his favorite writer" I felt American politics were bullshit (17 at the time) while everyone hemmed and hawed over this jackass whose most likely never read a book in his life. Fuck Reagan, fuck Reaganites, and fuck all the idiot republicans who insist on perpetuating his cult of personality.

There will not be an addition of a face to Mt Rushmore. As a former ranger there, I can confirm that there is no more suitable solid granite rock on which to carve another face. The pegmatite left up there is shot through with weakened quartzite veins and is relatively friable (crumbly) and not suited to carving.

Though it might make a powerful statement of the right's erosion of our freedoms & democracy if his likeness were to be put up there only to flake off bit by bit. But let's not waste more of our precious tax $$ on futile efforts.

There are much larger issues afoot these days and Jim makes note of one of them. The fact that today's Republican masses wouldn't line up behind a record like the Gipper's shows how devisive and narrow they have become. Guess how they've governed? Narrow-mindedly and devisively. Imagine that.

Republicans gloss over the life of senile Ronnie

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Lets take a true look at his life.
He was a snitch when president of the Screen Actors Guild for McCarthy in the 50's.
He never starred in a major motion picture. This B rated actor main supporting actor was a monkey. Just shows you how unintelligent the man actually was.
He was a wife swapper.
He changed political parties to please his 2nd wife Nancy's badgering.
As governor of California, he took the state from #1 in education, to #1 in incarceration.
A Reagan election committee, gave $40 million to Iran before the election of 1980, to keep the American hostages, to guarantee his winning the election. Upon his inauguration, one of the first things he did was to unfreeze Iranian assets held in the U.S..
He effectively canceled the Carter Energy Policy, causing the current energy crises the U.S. faces today.
As president, he supported "Freedom fighters" Saddam Hussien and Osma Bin Laden, and the U.S. now calls them terrorists.
While claiming his administration "doesn't negotiate with terrorists", he had a traitor to his country Oliver North, sell war materials to Iran. Then taking the money to buy weapons for the contras of Nicaragua (which Congress had outlawed), in exchange for Cocaine, becoming the biggest drug dealer the world has known, and causing the Crack epidemic in the U.S. during the 80's.
His clandestine foreign policies were implemented by a secretive government running the country.
280 Marines died in Beirut, and to "Save Face", and forget about this tragedy, he orders the invasion of 2 Caribbean 3rd world countries to pump up his ego.
He busted the FAA Controllers Union, which has eroded organized labor in the U.S. to its current membership. Continuing the decimation of the middle class in the U.S. to this today.
He had an aversion to the EPA and its laws to help combat environmental pollution.
The S&L loan scandal, happened under his administration, by the loosening of banking regulation.
His budgets as president, caused huge deficits, which will take many future generations to pay off. Some say this was worth the "Fall of the Soviet Union". This only brought "Russia" to her knees, which now has one of the 5 fastest developing countries in the world today with multitudes of energy to supply the world.
All one has to do is look at as he progressed through his presidency, his senile mind was more obvious to the world.
This is just a mole hill of a mountain of public information to disgrace his reputation, and be called one of America's worst presidents.
When republicans call him a man of "Values", I have to refute their claims, as a man who sold his soul to evil.
His likeness doesn't have the honor of gracing a sewer, let alone Mt. Rushmore.

That's it... time to dismantle the GOP, once and for all, forever and ever

Reagan on Rushmore? A senile geezer riddled with Alzenheimers before he took a single step into the Oval Office, senile Von Hindenburg to George H. W. Bush running the entire Adminstration under his nose the way Dick Cheney runs Poppy's son's...

Do it. Just try. That ugly face will be blown off that mountain so fast it would make your head swim. Responsible for 100 million AIDS deaths in Africa, where Poppy Bush's CIA deployed the first bioweapon HIV on the planet against the third world by tainted W.H.O. smallpox vaccine. Responsible for decimating the gay communites in Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, and San Francisco by deploying the weapon there in tained hepatitis B vaccine tests, as a decoy deploymnet in a tighly insular community with little fear of spread to mainstream America to hide the fact that Ft. Detrick Maryland was the source of the virus bioweapon.

Reagan on Rushmore? Not EVER. Better plan to have an entire platoon of armed guards around it 24/7 because the bastard won't be up there long.

Now JFK? Someone who was murdered for his beliefs and service to the country? That's who should be up on Rushmore, if anyone.

It's time to dismantle the GOP, once and for all, forever and ever. Let them split off into right wing militias with the rest of the Nazis, and maybe the small tiny handful (about 4% at MOST) can possibly form a reformed Republican Party, one when they see a Karl Rove or Bush coming, kick him over to the NaziMilitiaGOP.

You're not fooling anyone anyore, boys; if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, steal elections like a duck, commits war crimes like a duck, is in bed with corporate america more than the opposition like a duck, tortures, rapes, and kills like a duck,

THEN IT'S A GODDAMNED NAZI DUCK.

Goddamn all of you and Goddamn your Reagan too who dozed off while Bush I started all of this Nazi bullshit.

Oh, did I forget to mention dozing off while Bush I and his corrupt CIAlQaeda dealt drugs to the inner city to fund illegal wars against helpless catholic priests and nuns trying to throw off Nazi dictators we were propping up, until we turned on them. Like Noriega, who want to cut off the drug flow?

They won't even dare to make a Reagan circulation coin. People would melt it down for scrap.

Hey Jim,

I'd be OK with Reagan on Rushmore if we could count him, posthumously, in our census. Thanks to the agricultural policies he either started or continued, SD has lost a lot of people and we need to fudge the numbers anyway we can.
Besides Rushmore ruined a perfectly good mountain and Borglum was a megalomaniac, Reagan may be the perfect face for this tourist trap.
Unless they want to put him on Stone Mountain instead.

Reagan:Destroyer of knowledge
Posted by: garry minor on Jan 17, 2008 10:15 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In 1974 the National Institute of Health funded researchers at the Medical College of Virginia to find evidence that cannabis damages the immune system, instead they found that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of tumors in mice--lung and breast cancer, and a virus induced leukemia. The DEA quickly shut down the study and all further cannabis/tumor research. In 1976 President Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and granted exclusive rights to the pharmaceutical companies, who set out, unsuccessfully to develop a synthetic form without the high. Think of the needless pain and suffering of the millions of cancer patient since that time! Think about it!!!
In 1983 the Reagan/Bush team tried to persuade American Universities and researchers to destroy all 1966-76 cannabis research work, including conpendiums in libraries. Once again, think of the damage done by this mentality! IT CAN CURE CANCER!
In the 1980's it was discovered that all mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles have cannabinoid receptors throughout their body that work independently from those that govern the heart and lungs. This is why cannabis overdose is impossible. Again, was this knowledge made public?
In Madrid Spain in 2000 a Spanish researcher, Dr. Manuel Guzman, once again discovered that THC destroy's tumors and found that even when irrigating rats brains with high doses of THC for seven day's there were no harmful biochemical and neurological effects. He had heard of the Virginia study but was unable to find documentation.
Since that time at the University of Newfoundland in 2006 it was discovered that cannabis promotes the growth of brain cells and can prevent Alzheimers. In Canada and Europe it is currently being used to treat Alzheimers, epilepsy, autism, MS, nausea, chronic pain, diabetes, arthritis, migraine, asthma, emphysema, obesity, glaucoma, herpes, skin conditions, cystic fibrosis, Parkinsons, Huntingtons, Tourettes, Crohns disease, bowel disorders, and more. Unfortunately our FDA still refuses to allow testing here in the Land of the Free!
Anything made from oil, coal, timber, or cotton can be made ecologically friendly with cannabis hemp. Canvas is Dutch for cannabis. All paper, plastics, paints, varnishes, textiles, lubricants, fuels, plywood, many structural components, insulations, feedstocks, cosmetics, health foods, and more can all be made with it. In 1938 Popular Mechanics wrote that over 25,000 products could be made with it, and that it would be the first billion dollar crop. Henry Ford built and fueled a car primarily with it. The cellulose plastic panels ten times stronger than steel. Synthetic plastics were developed using cellulose technology. It grows without most fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides to foul the soil and water, in conditions other crops wont grow, from the Equator to the Arctic Circle. All Nations can benefit from it.
It's seed is the single most nutritious thing you can eat. Our Government stockpiles it as a strategic food source under Executive order #12919, yet deny it to us today. This seed could replace the need for hormones and remnants in our feedstock which is why American beef is bannad in Europe. It will end world hunger. Did you know the value of this seed?
Currently China grows 40% of the worlds hemp and is developing new technologies for food, fuels, paper, plastics, and textiles that will keep the United States at an economic and strategic deficit for years. In fact the United States is now one of a few Nations that forbid growing the most useful plant on the planet, to the Canadians delight. Were you aware of this?
In light of this information I would say that Reagan got exactly what he had coming to him, Alzheimers. He spent his final years on this planet a mindless shell. Even the good he did, wasn't really good! Only an act.

Kaneh bosm!!!!!!!

How about one of those cardboard cutouts of Ronnie on the mountain ?
Posted by: hadashito on Jan 17, 2008 10:22 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I live in Arizona where, in the first election for governor several years ago won by our current governor, Democrat Janet Napolitano, she ran against a far right wing, fundamentalist Mormon serving in the Congress. His name is Matt Salmon; he lost that election by only a slim margin. Salmon was perhaps the earliest and strongest advocate of carving Ronnie's face on Rushmore.
I had often noticed, with a dismayed shake of my head, the cardboard cutouts of that great Hollywood movie patriot and admitted draft dodger during WWII, John Wayne (THE DUKE !) at the Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix: a life size color photo of that politically conservative gunslinger glued to a cardboard base, all dressed up in his cowboy suit, welcoming visitors to "THE REAL WEST".
So during the Salmon/Napolitano campaign I wrote to the Salmon campaign suggesting that since carving Ronnie's face on Mount Rushmore was impractical, Salmon should submit a bill before the Congress promoting a well funded project to place one of those cardboard cutouts of Ronnie up above the faces already there. His cutout might even be joined by a similar one of THE DUKE. Cool idea, right ? Both great patriots who never served in the war but played heroic roles in movies about it.
Anticipating the only conceivable criticism of my suggestion, I further advocated that the cutout(s) be double LAMINATED with strong, thick plastic films to ward against weathering.
Ronnie, THE DUKE, and the proper plastic Hollywood treatment. Now that's a far more appropriate suggestion than wasting the expense, time, labor, and all that granite.

The Reagan myth is a myth

Ronald Reagan began the golden age of give-aways to the Military Industrial Complex as he plunged the nation into the greatest debt we had ever seen. Reagan decided that if the rich got richer it would trickle down to the middle class. It took a Democrat in Bill Clinton to rebalance the budget. When Bush came in, he squandered that money that could have served this nation well, and diverted it right back to contracts for his rich cronies who had done so well under Reagan. Puleeeze. Reagan was no great shakes, and the pretense that he was a great President is fiction. The GOP believes that if they repeat the same false myths, people are stupid enough to swallow them. The GOP reads the "Art of War" way too much.

One way in which loopy Ray-gun resembles IdiotBush is in the posturing as military men. Ray-gun spent WW2 making movies in Hollywierd for the military. Probably where he got his early training in propaganda.

Some well-placed fool arranged for Ray-gun to get a captain's commission in the Army, so that he could parade around the movie lots like a real soldier while other less fortunate cannon fodder were dodging real lead.
At best, both Ray-gun and IdiotBush are as slow-witted as anyone who ever disgraced the presidency, except that Ronnie (isn't that a precious nickname?) had the presence of mind to consult the stars before making any big decisions.
If a president's reliance on astrology doesn't inspire your confidence, well then, I don't know how to please you.
Mt. Rushmore my arse! Reagan was so lost in the job that he should have been on milk cartons most of the time.

Another way in which he bested IdiotBush, is that he could at least read his lines, but then he was trained as an actor, while IdiotBush was trained as a cheerleader.

Mt. Rushmore is one of the biggest insults to Indigenous Americans--especially the Lakota on whose rightful territory it was carved upon. That's why Russell Means once went up there and literally pissed on it.

Speaking as a Libertarian, Reagan overall was an ok governor on economics and even some social issues that Hightower points out, but not as good a president.

For Dems who still praise Franklin Roosevelt, all monuments to him deserve to be pissed on too for upholding racial segregation against blacks; a racist colonial master American Indian policy like the one Republicans and Democrats still uphold today, and throwing American-born citizens of Japanese ancestry into concentration camps during WWII.
