Is There an Edwards Surprise Looming In Nevada?

Posted by Blue Texan, Firedoglake at 11:04 AM on January 15, 2008.

If Edwards wins Nevada, all bets are off. Stranger things have happened -- let's not anoint anyone just yet.

I'm relieved that Obama and Clinton have called off the dogs (though I'd like to see the key surrogates involved whacked). But has their bickering given Edwards new life in Nevada?

For the first time since polling began in the Silver State, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama has taken a slight lead over U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, and former U.S. John Edwards has come within shooting distance of the two front-runners.

Of 500 likely Democratic caucus-goers surveyed, 32 percent favored Obama, 30 percent favored Clinton, and 27 percent favored Edwards.

It's up for grabs. And this is impressive (emphasis mine):

Most surprising was Edwards' standing, which jumped 15 points from the last RGJ poll in November. Edwards was second in Iowa and third in New Hampshire and has not campaigned in Nevada since those contests.

Think about that. He hasn't been there and he's surging. Compare and contrast his media coverage with Willard's or Grandpa's and ask yourself why he's not getting more press.

If Edwards wins Nevada, all bets are off. He'll get a big bump and 2 weeks of fawning press as the "Comeback Kid" before he returns to the state that he won in 2004. Stranger things have happened -- let's not anoint anyone just yet.

Every straw poll and primary I have participated in

have Edwards as the winner. Thom Hartmann (Air America Radio) takes a straw poll weekly, and Edwards has won every one. I plan to vote for him in our primary, the first time I have every voted in a primary, but I want to get rid of these neoncons so badly, I would do anything and go anywhere to make it happen.

The one thing I would disagree with in this article

Is that Edwards will get any coverage beyond the perfunctory and dismissive coverage his second place in Iowa and third in NH received even if he blows em out in Iowa.

He is an anti-corporatist populist - for some strange reason the corporate owned media hate him. Go figure.

I would so love to be proven wrong and to see some sort of fairness - but it ain't gonna happen. Since they stopped talking about the haircut (too blatant when his opponents don't mention it) they have stopped talking about him. The Rethugs will have no need to do opposition research on Edwards - the MSM will not only do it for them, but give it lots of repetition and play.

I hope that voters in the early primary states wake up soon and realize that Edwards is our best hope to win the White House in 08 and the only candidate who can change the destructive path our government is on. We really need someone who will fight for the average citizen.

John Edwards is a wonderful candidate and the media's attitude toward him is terrible. Since he's an anti-corporate populist, the money guys don't want him but he obviously stands the greatest chance of winning in the general election because i think the people would love him. IF they could hear something besides he's a plastic faker with expensive hair.

I hope Edwards does win in Nevada. I love seeing the tv news pundits with egg on their face.

Edwards is the most Electable candidate over Republicans

Edwards polling against all the prospective Republican candidates is best of all. Although he is a refomed hawk, he has been outspoken about the most important issues: The war, the corporatism that leads to war and war-profiteering. We all need to help build the fire in him with contributions. He may not measure up to the outrage of peaceniks Kucinich and Paul, but he has seen the light of day and that is much more than can be said of AIPAC league, warmonger Hillary the stealth Rep. and compromising nice guy Obama.

The media will continue to promote the weakest Dem. candidates against the Republicans.

I'M STILL MAD AT HILLARY, OBAMA, EDWARDS AND MSNBC

for cutting the minority candidates out of the debate before I could get to my vote. The three of them could have stopped that. If they have to pick between self interest and democracy, it is clear what they are going to do.

They cut Dennis Kucinich and then they are going to turn around and ask me to vote for one of them. One reason many democrats don't vote is that they are so damned mad at the democrats. There was no third party for them to funnel into so they just voted for the republicans.

Have these guys forgotten how close the last two elections were? Notice that Fred Thompson is still in the running. Dennis Kucinich received more votes than he did in New Hampshire. Something is rotten in Denmark.
