Why Helping Romney Win Michigan Isn't Such a Bad Idea

Posted by Kos , Daily Kos at 3:23 PM on January 11, 2008.

We want Mitt in, because the more GOP candidates fighting it out, trashing each other and spending tons of money, the better it is for us.

In 1972, Republican voters in Michigan decided to make a little mischief, crossing over to vote in the open Democratic primary and voting for segregationist Democrat George Wallace, seriously embarrassing the state's Democrats. In fact, a third of the voters in the Democratic primary were Republican crossover votes. In 1988, Republican voters again crossed over, helping Jesse Jackson win the Democratic primary, helping rack up big margins for Jackson in Republican precincts. (Michigan Republicans can clearly be counted on to practice the worst of racial politics.) In 1998, Republicans helped Jack Kevorkian's lawyer -- quack Geoffrey Feiger -- win his Democratic primary, thus guaranteeing their hold on the governor's mansion that year.

With a history of meddling in our primaries, why don't we try and return the favor. Next Tuesday, January 15th, Michigan will hold its primary. Michigan Democrats should vote for Mitt Romney, because if Mitt wins, Democrats win. How so?

For Michigan Democrats, the Democratic primary is meaningless since the DNC stripped the state of all its delegates (at least temporarily) for violating party rules. Hillary Clinton is alone on the ballot.

But on the GOP side, this primary will be fiercely contested. John McCain is currently enjoying the afterglow of media love since his New Hamsphire victory, while Iowa winner Mike Huckabee is poised to do well in South Carolina.

Meanwhile, poor Mitt Romney, who's suffered back-to-back losses in the last week, desperately needs to win Michigan in order to keep his campaign afloat. Bottom line, if Romney loses Michigan, he's out. If he wins, he stays in.

And we want Romney in, because the more Republican candidates we have fighting it out, trashing each other with negative ads and spending tons of money, the better it is for us. We want Mitt to stay in the race, and to do that, we need him to win in Michigan.

Two polls the last couple of days show a tight race: Strategic Vision (R) shows Romney within striking distance with 20 percent to McCain's 29 (Huckabee is third with 18), while Rossman Group shows Huckabee with the lead -- 23 percent to Romney's 22 and McCain's 18.

Now here's the thing -- without a real Democratic contest on the ballot, and a lack of party registration in Michigan, this is an open primary. Anyone can pick up a Republican ballot. So Michigan Democrats and independents who want to see the Republican battle royale continue should just take a few minutes on Tuesday, January 15th to cast a ballot for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary.

If you know someone in Michigan, send them the email I've included below the fold. If you don't know someone in Michigan, send the email to your liberal friends and see if THEY have friends in Michigan. Get the word out, whether by blog, mailing list, MySpace or Facebook page, or whatever.

If we can help push Mitt over the line, not only do we help keep their field fragmented, but we also pollute Romney's victory. How "legitimate" will the Mittster's victory look if liberals provide the margin of victory? Think of the hilarity that will ensue. We'll simply be adding fuel to their civil war, never a bad thing from our vantage point.

Michigan Democrats helped deliver their state to McCain in 2000 to spite their hated governor, John Engler, who had "guaranteed" his state to Bush. To prevent such future mischief, Michigan Republicans helped push through a unified tax-payer funded primary date to supposedly keep Democrats focused on their own race (prior to this year, party contests were funded by the parties). Let's make sure their meddling with the Democratic primary and their misuse of taxpayer funds backfires on them.

Michigan is Romney's last stand. He has pulled all advertising from other states for a last-ditch effort there. It's sink or swim time for Romney, and we're going to throw him a lifesaver.

So why are we doing this? Because we can. Because it'll be fun. And because we've suffered Republican meddling, stealing, and disenfranchisement in our elections for far too long.

So get the word out and get out the vote!.

Dear [Friend],

We're not going to beat around the Bush. If you want to help make mischief for the Republican Party - and bolster the Democrats' chances for taking the White House this November - read on!

Are you a Democrat or independent registered to vote in Michigan? If you are, vote for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary on Tuesday, January 15th!

Do you know any Democrats or independents in Michigan? If you do, encourage them to vote for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary on Tuesday, January 15th!

And if you don't know anyone in Michigan, then forward this e-mail on to your like-minded friends - you never know who they might know.

Okay, so, I know - you must think I'm nuts to suggest that anyone ever vote Republican. But this situation is special. As it happens, the Michigan Democratic primary is uncontested. Barack Obama and John Edwards aren't even on the ballot. So that means even if you're a Hillary Clinton supporter, there's no need to vote for her - she's running unopposed.

But the Republican primary is hotly contested. And Michigan law lets anyone - including independents AND Democrats - vote in the Republican primary. This means there's a great opportunity, as we say above, for us to make mischief!

So why should Dems and indies vote Romney? After his victory in New Hampshire, the press has declared John McCain the Republican front- runner. Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee, who won in Iowa, looks poised to do well in South Carolina, which hosts the next primary after Michigan.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney desperately needs to win Michigan in order to keep his campaign afloat. And the more Republican candidates who are fighting it out, trashing each other with negative ads and spending tons of money, the better it is for the Democratic candidates, of course! In other words, we want Mitt to stay in the race, and to do that, we need him to win in Michigan.

So Michigan Democrats and independents who want to see the Republican battle royale continue should just take a few minutes on Tuesday, January 15th to cast a ballot for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary. And don't feel bad or awkward about doing so - the Republicans have done things just like this many times in the past. What's more, if Michigan Republicans didn't want Dems or indies to vote in their primary, they could have changed the rules. But they didn't, so here we are.

Again, if you've got friends in Michigan, send this e-mail along to them. If you don't, send it to all of your friends and relatives who want to see the Republicans booted out of the White House this year - they might know some folks in Michigan. And heck, if you live in Michigan yourself, then definitely vote Romney in the primary!

Remember, the message is simple: The more Republican candidates who remain in the race, the better it is for the Democratic candidates. And Mitt Romney is much likelier to stay in the race if he wins the Michigan primary. Democrats and independents can help make this happen - by voting for Mitt!

Good luck, and to victory in November!

Do you mean Democrats? Do you think any of the front running Democrats are any better than that shill Mitt Romney? Please get a clue and see who is really funding and supporting the leading Democrats. Where do you think Hillary and Oboma get the majority of their money? If you guessed individual donations, you’d be wrong. These masters of shill marketing are supported by the same big corporations that have GWB and the rest of major repubs in their back pockets!

Please try some investigative journalism. The sooner we expose these traitors for what they are to the American people, the sooner the truth will be set free.

Wake up American people! You’re asleep at the wheel and heading towards the ravine of totalitarianism!

More Anti-Democratic Trash

In the name of what should we so unabashedly corrupt the democratic process of the people's government? Sure as hell can't be in the name of DEMOCRACY, can it? No it can't, because the abandonment of democracy is the hottest thing in the American political scene. Not that it didn't already find its way out, I don't know, decades ago. This election so far already shows with shameless stridence how little Americans give a damn about their hallowed freedom to self-rule.

The logic of this article's argument is none other than the shallow, good-for-nothing logic of Capitalism. It is the way of Wall Street and the Corporate Ladder. Asking for it to be how we run our lives is asking for a way out of the responsibility implicit in the freedom of democratic self-rule. Grow a spine, America, and demand your representatives to do so too, lest they be fired (much as we call for the impeachment of Bush/Cheney), or else you damn us to moral and not just material ruin.

I greatly admire Markos, but this has to be one of the most ridiculous posts he has written. Vote for Romney so that the GOP will have more candidates to choose from, thus the GOP candidate (not Romney?) will fail in the long run? WTF? And, how does this sneaky underhanded hoax further democratic ideals and maintain election integrity? It doesn't, thus Markos' plan stinks.

Further, his plan could backfire horribly: Romney could actually win Michigan, gain momentum, and go on to win the nomination. If you recall, Romney scored the highest in the "totalitarianism questionnaire" that the Boston Globe's Charlie Savage sent to all the candidates. Romney would take and run with the baton of obliterating the Constitution, furthering torture, and shoring up economic elitism.

I think Markos is experiencing sleep deprivation from fatherhood, thus his posts are getting weirder and weirder as the election season heats up.

...I am not going to "waste" my vote on any Republican. I have some measure of courage in my convictions and will be casting my ballot for Dennis Kucinich, the one candidate that most matches my beliefs. Withdrawal from Iraq, impeachment of Bush/Cheney, single payer health care, dumping of NAFTA for fair trade policies, just to name a few. This is the candidate that all progressives all across this country should vote for.

The problem is that if a lot of progresives do this it will take votes disproportionately from the ABC Democrats (Anybody But Clinton). If we ended up with Clinton and Romney as the nominees we'd be in big trouble.

Don't vote Romney!

Romney has to be the absolutely worst of the candidates running for office now. And that is saying a HELL OF A LOT!

If Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, which could happen, then there will be a good chance she will lose to the Republican candidate.

So, NO, DON'T vote for Romney! If progressives must vote in the Republican primary then vote for Paul, or possibly McCain!

Please, for the love of all that is good. DON'T vote for Romney! He could indeed win the whole thing!!!

mitt romeny a bigot and a racist!!!!

mitt romeny is clearly a " bigot and a racist" mitt romeny believes in a religion that wouldnt allow blacks and other miniorites to worship in the presence of "white" people these are people who try to justify the myth that jesus christ was a "white man" when there were no "white" people in that region during christ's time on earth, except for the "romans" that killed him, they were clearly not part of god's plan other than the role they played in his murder, any one who would vote for mitt romeny, would stand with the romans that killed christ, not the true believers in christ that through documented fact and historical proof, that jesus christ was in fact a "negro" google the orgin of the true black jesus christ and see for yourself, the morman religion is just a cult that wants to have it their way and would have you believe that christ was a "white" man white men were not beaten and nailed to a cross this only happened to the lower-class of people at that time in history check out the facts about christ, investigate the truth and you'll see it's all a myth and the truth is not presented to you.

Kos a Disservice; serious mistake

Why on earth would we not support the most worthy in any party rather than the disinguous and hare brained idiocy promoted by Kossies?

Ron Paul has provided an invaluable service to both parties by interjecting creative debate discussing serious issues. He is to the Republicans, what Kucinich is to Democrats. Bill Moyer's show two weeks ago featured interviews of both Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich. They are both more thoughtful, articulate, sincere and creative than any of the other phony candidates in both Parties.

How many times must Paul and Kucinich redeem themselves from the mortifying talking heads who wish to kill real debate. Kos is simply another of the media who like to obfuscate and avoid the real issue; the World War against oil bearing countries.

What is to be served by voting in a Republican primary for ANY Repug? Let's say this causes these critters to go to their convention with NO CLEAR WINNER: What will they do THEN? Could they then unite behind ONE candidate? WHAT IF THEY CAN'T?!!!!! Then they will have to chose SOMEONE ELSE........and that SOMEONE ELSE might just be JEB BUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In a perfect would, the focus would be on choosing better candidates by analyzing their positions, voting records, history, judgment, etc.

But, "go, team, go" is seductively simple, and sure to appeal to the base.

because they just pass the money they spend around with each other. The republicans own the TV stations, the ad agencies, and the think tanks that think up the attacks.

The reason you don't want Mit Romney is that you have forgotten how his father got rich in the first place. The Nash motor company wasn't truly broke until he left. I really believe that Mit will do the same for you.
