Is Washington Big Enough for Two Vaginas?

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 6:28 AM on January 11, 2008.

Pelosi has so far stayed out of the race. But when her top advisor endorses Obama, does it send the signal?

Honestly, I just don't even know what to say anymore:

An interesting endorsement for Obama today. Pelosi's BFF George Miller, a fellow Californian who chairs the House Education and Labor Committee, announced today he's endorsing Obama.

Pelosi has so far stayed out of the race. But when her top advisor who also happens to be a famous champion of women politicians endorses Obama, does it send the signal: is there room in Washington for both a Speaker Pelosi and a President Hillary?

Are you fucking kidding me?

Voluminously speaking, it seems to me like the dicks are taking up a hell of a lot more space in the Beltway. From a strictly geometric perspective, a few more vaginas might be in order.

Maybe even more than two--although I'm not sure the world is ready to so brazenly test the Patriarchal Law of Concurrent Cuntitude, which posits that tokenism is the universe's stabilizing force. If we allow two women to simultaneously hold positions of power, there's no telling what might happen.

Isn't voting for somebody because of the gender something we used to be...

...in favor of moving away from.

I thought sexism was frowned on? Is that a philosophical difference between liberals and progressives?

I'd automatically endorse a woman who went to Yale law school...and then married her way to the top. That's a model I'd want my little sister to emulate.

Of course Washington is big enough for two vaginas, afterall it has been the haven for some of the biggest pricks produced by the species for 200+ years.

PS. Bush and Cheney give a whole new meaning to 'uglies' in 'bumping uglies'.

You may as well have used the "C" word, Melissa. Don't know what to say anymore? Then STFU! What could possibly be the point of suggesting a cat fight between these two women?

Thanks for appealing to the neanderthal mind-set of those who think a woman is defined by her anatomy and has no place in the political process, (they might scratch each others eyes out!)

I am in no way a fan of either of these women but you just set the debate back about 100 or even a thousand years. Nice job. You might want to stick to baking cookies in the future.

Boo! Hiss!

And alternet, please stop posting stupid sexist articles like this! It makes you look bad. Ughh!

As far as I can tell, it's Jay Newton-Small -- the Time Magazine blogger quoted above -- who's seeing Great Significance in the fact that a Pelosi adviser is endorsing Obama. True, it's not entirely clear what he means by asking, "does it send the signal: is there room in Washington for both a Speaker Pelosi and a President Hillary?" Note that the question-within-a-question form is a clever way of avoiding actually saying anything: Newton-Small is only asking if there's room, not suggesting that anyone thinks there isn't, and he's not even saying that the endorsement sends a signal; he's just asking if it sends a signal. Blogging at its most gutless, if you ask me.

Melissa McEwan doesn't think there's only room for two vaginas in Washington. Quite the contrary. She's calling Newton-Small on the carpet for (it seems) reading this notion into the fact the Pelosi's adviser endorsed Obama, not Clinton.

IOW, Newton-Small is trying to read the entrails of George Miller's endorsement of Barack Obama for clues to which way Nancy Pelosi is leaning, and then McEwan is trying to read the entrails of Newton-Small's thoughts on the subject. It's a pretty good illustration of why so much campaign coverage is so stupid.

Its clear from the comments so far (although no surprise) that alternet readers have quite a bit of progressing to do. There are so many who are reflexively hostile to issues of race or gender.

I did not see any endoresement in this blog posting of Clinton for president. Just a little bit of dismay towards the suggestion that two women in leadership is one too many. It was a reasonable inference based on the excerpt.

I think a lot of Alternet readers really need to do home and hug Mommy.
