Kucinich Backs Obama in Iowa, Nader Supports Edwards

KUCINICH BACKS OBAMA IN IOWA...

Barack Obama got a boost among progressive Democrats in Iowa today when Dennis Kucinich announced that he was asking his supporters to back Obama in the second round of voting at the caucus.

The arcane rules of the Iowa caucus require a candidate to receive 15 percent of the vote at a given caucus location in order to qualify for delegates. After the first round of voting, supporters of candidates who are not "viable" can choose their second, top tier choice. In '04 Kucinich urged his supporters, in a surprising move, to back John Edwards, helping to boost his margin in liberal areas. Edwards has moved to the left since then, yet this time Kucinich went with Obama. "Sen. Obama and I have one thing in common: Change," Kucinich said in a press release today.

Kucinich hasn't campaigned much in Iowa this time around but he retains a loyal band of followers. In a tight race between Edwards and Obama among liberal Democrats here, Kucinich could give Obama an edge.

Nader Backs Edwards

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Ralph Nader unleashed on Hillary Rodham Clinton Monday - criticizing her for being soft on defense spending and a chum of big business - and expressed his strong support for John Edwards.

In an 11th hour effort to encourage liberal Iowans to "recognize" Edwards by "giving him a victory," the activist and former presidential contender said in an interview that Clinton will "pander to corporate interest groups" if elected.

Nader specifically accused Clinton of failing to challenge military spending because "she is a woman who doesn't want to be labeled as soft on defense and she doesn't want to be shown as taking on big business."

The great enemy of corporations has stepped in to endorse the man with a plan to deal with them.

Gonna be a long time before I forgive Ralph for 2000 - but this is a very positive step.

Right on about Hilary. Good to hear from Ralph. But what is with the Dennis flip/flop from Edwards to Obama?

You can be in agreement with someone on many or even all of their policies and still question their judgment and competence.

These things matter too.

I've done a ton of homework on the health care issue, and Obama's loopholes for the health insurance industry (health insurers will have to "justify" charging higher rates, which the industry calls "cherry picking" and "lemon dropping"; with friends like this who need enemies?) are even more deviously disguised than Hillary's. Edwards is the only one of the top three that "gets" what must be done to fix our broken health care system. Dennis, the Devil IS in Barak's (and Hillary's) details.

What are you thinking? Edwards' health care plan is so much like yours and Obama's is just a health INSURANCE plan. I am just going to ignore this endorsement and go with your 2004 backing of Edwards.

A glowing review about John Edwards. Did not out and out endorse him, but didn't endorse Obama. Course I think Moore's heart belongs to Al Gore.

when he can get some publicity or support, never when he can do any good for anyone else.

Nader's support just made me rethink my choices for nominee.

This does not compute ideologically but makes tortured sense strategically. It looks like Kucinich wants to knock off Edwards in Iowa—where Kucinich is not really competing—so that he can compete for third place or better in New Hampshire where he is actively campaigning. If Kucinich’s people put Edwards over the top in Iowa, Kucinich would probably have a hard time getting his own supporters to stick with him in New Hampshire. Since an Edwards win in both states would mean a real chance of getting the nomination, New Englanders might not want to waste their support on Kucinich.

And/or Kucinich is making a deal with Barak. In either case, I hope Edwardians ignore it, and it considerably lowers my estimation of Kucinich.

Nader and Kucinich are supporting the "rhethoric," not the candidates.
This is what Nader and Kucinich have been giving us; and that's what they support from the candidates of their choice.
