President Palin? That's the Next 'Open Door' She Wants to 'Plow Through'

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 8:37 AM on November 12, 2008.

Palin seems to have given the next presidential race quite a bit of thought.

Christopher Orr noted that as recently as Friday, Sarah Palin told reporters that she's ready to get back to the people's business. "[E]very day is a full day here in the governor's office," Palin said. "It's gonna be busy days here just like it was busy days on the trail, being the governor full-time in addition to being a candidate. Now, of course, we get to concentrate just on one of those."

While I don't doubt that Palin is ready to focus her energies on one of the responsibilities, I'm not sure it's the one she was elected to do.

A couple of nights ago, for example, was the first of a two-part interview with Fox News' Greta van Susteren, during which the Alaska governor talked about her clothes, her reported ignorance, her perspective on the political landscape, and her future plans.

Ms. Palin directed most of her media criticism at liberal bloggers, whom she twice called, "those bloggers in their parents' basement just talkin' garbage."

But she had a kind word for President-elect Barack Obama, who she said called her during the campaign to wish her luck.

"He was cool," Ms. Palin said, with almost a giggle. "He said, 'good luck, but not that much luck.'"

On the question of whether Ms. Palin will run in 2012, she answered, "This is what I always do. I'm like, O.K., God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is. Even if it's cracked up a little bit, maybe I'll plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door. And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."

For those keeping score, that quote included six references to an "open door," and three references to "plowing" through it. Palin, in other words, seems to have given the next presidential race quite a bit of thought.

As for "concentrating" on "being the governor full-time," Palin appeared on NBC's "Today" show yesterday morning, and talked to CNN's Wolf Blitzer, and will speak at the Republican Governors Conference in Miami tomorrow.

"[E]very day is a full day here in the governor's office"? Perhaps, but not for the reasons one might expect.

In four years or eight years....

That's what she said.

I'm gratified to see her blanch just a little bit at the prospect of facing Obama in four years. Eight is more like it, and it will be a waste of time and money.

If Barack totally fails, we'll be so far down the chute that a majority might go for a woman President who will say she can pray us back into viability. Those will be the people, just like Palin, who don't know what the purpose of prayer is. Her self-deluded, self-centered communication with her personal deity is familiar to anyone who's been on the receiving end of bigotry.

But I don't think Barack is going to fail.

The party which once supported this kind of garbage is in disarray, and isn't going to get together without its moderates taking the reins. If there had been an overwhelming majority of Republicans who wanted Sarah Palin in office, she, and incidentally, John McCain, would be looking forward to their inauguration. By the time Palin gets ready to run, we have a good chance that the Republicans who control the money will be formerly marginalized people like Bill Weld, Christie Todd Whitman and other more ethical conservatives who wouldn't take a chance on her.

Please don't give this woman any more press. The sooner she fades from the mainstream conciousness the better.

How would it be possible or necessary to "plow through" an open door. Her thoughts have never been connected to what she is saying and so she thankfully makes no sense. The press should continue to report on results of her unethical behavior in AK. The 2010 census will see increases in population, (and electoral votes), on the west coast and primarily in urban areas. Sarah's midwestern, one issue and "red" state voters will have much less say from now on.

Down Syndrome

Sarah Palin has a kid with Down Syndrome. I'm sure she has every right to keep this a private matter, as well as her pregnant teenage daughter, and we should respect it if she wants to. But it seems to me that the Down Syndrome issue is one that is nothing at all to be ashamed of, and one that could be a positive one, if not as self-serving as all the rest of the publicity she seems to be getting lately.
Only part of the blame belongs to the media for not bringing the subject up, such as "what advice do you have..." or "Will you be making Down Syndrome advocacy a part of your personal political agenda from now on?"

reflects a classical case of penis envy. perhaps her and "first dude" could work that out privately and spare the public embarassment.

After eight years of an amoral, pigheaded, self-centered neocon "trickle-down" moron, how could we, even in our worst sweat-drenched nightmares, even consider four or eight more years with ANOTHER one?! Does America have some sort of collective death wish?!

SARAH IS THE MEDIA'S DREAM. HER IGNORANCE IS OVERWHELMED BY HER PUBLIC RELATIONS PERSONALITY- EVERY FAUX PAS IS NEW HEADLINE.
