McCain's Guarantee: Usual Campaign Talk or Something More?

Posted by Zuzu , Shakesville at 8:32 AM on October 27, 2008.

There's something about a Republican candidate giving a "guarantee" of victory, that reminds me of voter suppression.

John McCain, on "Meet the Press":

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he can "guarantee" a win on Nov. 4 in a squeaker victory that won't be clear until late that night.

McCain spoke amid signs of a tightening race, and reports of renewed determination among his staff, which is badly outgunned in both money and manpower.

"I guarantee you that two weeks from now, you will see this has been a very close race, and I believe that I'm going to win it," McCain told interim "Meet" moderator Tom Brokaw. "We're going to do well in this campaign, my friend. We're going to win it, and it's going to be tight, and we're going to be up late."
Maybe it's just me, but there's something about the idea of the Republican candidate giving a "guarantee" of victory after a squeaker when the Republicans have been working very diligently to suppress the vote via vote caging, challenges to new voters, attempts to challenge those whose homes have been foreclosed, etc., and when voting machines in many places are changing votes from Democrat to Republican, or dropping the Presidential vote off when the voter does a straight-ticket vote, that just sort of gives me pause.

But lets not forget Rove and his now infamous statement in 2006. "your entitled to your math, but I have THE math"
How did the chimp explain that one?
Oh yeah......."we took a thumpin"
I'm thinking this is some kind of mass, delusional thinking on the part of his campaign.
That is why it is essential to GET OUT AND VOTE !
We need record numbers to offset all the republican fuckery this time.

I've been noticing a lot of stories lately about how polls can't be trusted as the so-called "Bradley Effect" like they're trying to line up cover to explain how Obama might lose even though he's ahead in the polls and electoral college maps. I've also noticed a sprinkling of stories about how cities are preparing in case Obama loses and riots break out...scary, scary stuff.

First they came for:
Your Job,
Then your House,
Then your Savings,

Now they want to steal your VOTE,
Next your FREEDOM
And
Then your COUNTRY!

Rigged voting results typically have occurred in traditional battleground states like Ohio and Florida. However, I think Obama caught the Republicans off guard by widening battleground states to Virginia, Colorado, New Mexico and a few others.

Basically, Republicans will have a much harder time trying to rig elections in all those states. And if Obama wins in 2-3 of those battlegrounds, he wins the election.

Plus has deployed lawyers in Democratic areas in Florida to combat voter suppression.

How many of you remember...

in Michael Moore's Farenheit 911 when Bush was on his campaign bus with Brother Jeb and a reporter asked how Bush could "guarantee" a win in Florida.

Bush and Jeb look at each other and start to laugh... and W just smiled and said, "Trust me. We know." (Or words to that effect)

This "guarantee" is odd, to say the least. He can't possibly "guarantee" anything given the poll numbers and the electoral count so far. In fact, Obama is taking the exact opposite tack... he's refusing to say that he will win, saying that this isn't over yet and encouraging people to get out and vote.

It's very odd. What does he know that he can make such a seemingly stupid "guarantee?"

1. He knows he's a republican
2. He knows Rove and his cronies are in charge of his campaign
3. He knows he himself is a friggin' liar
4. He knows Obama is winning the philosophical debate
5. He knows his criminal hate squad is already in motion rigging the vote
6. He knows it worked twice for Bush
7. He knows he has ignorance on his side
8. He knows his platform is a stain on American democracy
9. He knows he is a coward and always has been
10. He knows his ego is as big as any ego ever contemplated

Never underestimate the ignorance of the voting public. In America, ignorance is bliss.

with his typical knowing sneer. Not the kind of "We're gonna win this one" cheer that people make, but presented as a statement of fact. I remember when I saw it, I just thought, "he's too dumb to know that he needs to hide this sort of thing; knowing that someone or some group are going to manipulate things to put him in the White House."
