Matthews Rips Palin: Somebody Needs to 'Give Her a Copy of the Constitution to Read'

Earlier this week, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) sat down for an interview with KUSA, an NBC affiliate in Colorado. As ThinkProgress first reported, in response to a question about "[w]hat does the Vice President do," Palin replied, "[T]hey're in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes." (She's wrong.)

Today on MSNBC, Chris Matthews challenged McCain campaign spokeswoman Nancy Pfotenhauer to defend Palin's comments, saying that in all his time in Washington, he has "never heard anybody" give an answer like Palin did. "Where does she get her civics?" asked Matthews. Pfotenhauer became visibly angry by the questioning and tried to change the subject. Matthews, however, refused to let her get away:

I don't know why Randy Scheunemann or one of the smart people around her -- Nicolle Wallace or somebody -- ought to go to the candidate for the Vice President and give her a copy of the Constitution to read. That's all it takes. It doesn't take a lot of penetrating though. Read the job description. [...]

Somehow, in all these trips to Washington -- through Neiman's, and through Saks, and through everwhere else she stopped off, she never picked up a copy of the Constitution. It is a problem. It is a problem, Nancy, and you know it.

Watch it (video and more analysis after the flip):

Whether Palin truly understands the role of the vice president has been repeatedly called into question. Right-wing members of the media, as well as conservatives such as Mitt Romney and former Bush strategist Matthew Dowd, have raised doubts about if Palin will be ready to step into the role of President. As recently as July, in fact, Palin dismissed the job, saying that it didn't seem "productive." "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?" she told CNBC.

Today, McCain insisted that Palin is "the most qualified of any that who has run recently for vice president, to tell you the truth."

Give Palin the Constitution?

A bit too late for that, surely. Someone should have handed Bush a copy of that document years ago, insisted that he read it and then take a simple multiple choice test on what it says with the understanding that his score would be released to the public. McCain also needs to read the document carefully, try to learn something from it and demonstrate what he has learned before ever being promoted as a candidate. As for Rove and Cheney, forget about it. They are both intelligent men; I'm quite convinced they know what the Constitution says--they just don't care.

Gov. Palin is simply a happy little hooker trolling suckers for the major neo-con pimps.

With love under will,

Bob, Adastra,

Re: Palin - just WHAT is she smoking??? I know for a fact that a former Governor of Alaska (Steve Cowper) passed a law to allow any Alaskan to grow and smoke pot as long as it was grown on their own property. Better check the stash at the Palin house - must be FANTASTIC stuff! And don't kids in Alaska get a peek at the US Constitution? She must have been practising her flute!

republican, lie no problem. lying is natural to them. do they talk about wasilly being the meth capital of alaska, of the dude being a member of a secessionist political party, and who's baby is it really? reason enough for not letting anyone see her medical records. lies lies lies if you're a republican they don't even have to be good lies because those that the lies are for are so dim they can't recognize a lie from the truth, if they've ever heard the truth, praise the lord, give me some of that healing power, god is great, some more of those lies. there is one thing that really bothers me, those religious folks make lots of babies, that's how their churches grow. liberal women are busy having a life, they have 1 or 2 babies if any. hmm how long will it take before there are many of them and few of us. then what happens.

There's a point here, but it's grossly overshadowed by Matthews as a sexist dickwad.

We already know that the Republicans think the Constitution is just a "goddam piece of paper," to quote the current Republican President. She won't read it if you give it to her, because she and McCain have no intention of following it anyway.

But Granny Palin has executive experience! Just look at what "executive experience" has done to this country for the past 8 yrs.

Now we have executive experience that leads to the road to nowhere, troopergate, illicit use of government office, $150,000 wardrobe, etc. And Granny doesn't have a clue what the VP does! Just great!

Ask Kucinich for a copy of His Pocket Constitution

Kucinich not only carries his own in his pocket, he's made them available to the Public. Much like early protestant produced English translated bibles in the Dark Ages.
consider the similarities in The Catholics Church attempt to keep the masses ignorant and the mis interpretation/representation of the Constitution every time a Repug's mouth starts moving.
It's not that Sarah does not know the Constitutional Limitation to the VP, She's just Re Interpreting them for the Common folk!Following in the Footsteps of the current 'Great Deceiver' CHENEY
Althouugh I am now supporting Sen Obama...The Real Unsung hero of this election season has been Kucinich...so where is the Judicary Committes on his Articles of Impeachment on Bush & Cheney?
Even if Sen Obama Wins, manyof US will still want prosectuions for the crimes commmitted over,at least, the last 8 yrs and will demanding our rights & freedoms be reinstated!

Puppet on strings

Palin is a figurehead VP as would McCain be so as President. If we believe that they actually make the decisions, we're deluded. There are people behind the scenes that pull the strings so in reality, it means little that she knows the Constitution. And, as has been pointed out, they wouldn't regard it anyway. She is on her mission from God to change over the Constitution to the bible. In that event, there's absolutely no need for the old piece of paper.

Republican Pirates are not interested in Governing, only in Plundering.

The lack of interest in basic tenets of the US government by a candidate for high office only shows that Republicans are only interested in gaining more and more advantages over the general population. They have no concern for the Common Good. An extreme case of "What's in it for ME".

In four months, Ms. Palin has not read the constitution, nor the job description she is applying for.

We the people, as the prospective employer, have justly observed this fact, and for the most part, rejected her application.

This probably applies to most all Republicans.

Dumbya considers the Constitution just a piece of paper, and has shredded most of the rights granted by the Constitution.

Republicans are just Pirates in Suits and Ties, and only interested in what they can steal from you.

what the Constitution actually says
Posted by: lexicon on Oct 23, 2008 7:38 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
the constitution says three things that are important to the discussion:

First, that the VP is the President of the Senate.

Second, that the President of the Senate ONLY votes as a tiebreaker.

Third, AND MOST OFTEN OVERLOOKED IN ALL ANALYSIS, is that the Senate is required to make it's own rules. (beyond the specific rules on recording votes, recesses, etc.)

THEREFORE, the Senate body "decides" what the role of the President of the Senate is to be. They do this by voting on rules and procedures.

So, IN THEORY, the Senate could make the President of the Senate an important post, that sets the legislative agenda and such...They could essentially give them the duties that the Majority Leader has today...but they never have.

In all the history of the Senate, the President of the Senate has been given no procedural role beyond the basic ceremonial/tiebreaker role outlined in the Constitution.

And also, the Senate would NOT be able to decide that the President of the Senate should get a vote, after all.

Anyway, that's all technical, because historically, the Senate understood that allowing the VP/President of the Senate an expanded role was anathema to the idea of separation of powers...and they in fact never did give the President of the Senate ANY powers beyond the specific tiebreaker role.

And...imagining that a democratic supermajority in the coming congress would give Sarah Palin, of all people, expanded powers to set agenda and determine process and policy, is really pretty amusing.

Although I agree with Chris, he is one terrible interviewer. He asks a question and then doesn't give the person a chance to speak. He won't listen. He keeps repeating the question, or elaborating on the questions, but he won't shut up. I find him very obnoxious.

This is no accident. Just as Bush has blown past all restraints of the Constitution, Palin is telegraphing her vision of where she would expand VP duties to subordinate the legislative branch. If she and McCain win and encounter a spineless and compliant Congress (i.e. 2000-now), that is where they would go.
Vote for Obama, or this is what you are voting for.

Sad Fact..

Palin's lack of understanding about the VP responsibilities under the Constitution is predicated on two things: A. her lack of an adequate education in civics, and B. she is being coached by the very same people that have turned the VP office into a shadow government under Cheney. She truly believes that she will have all the power she says she will because she will have all the same criminal advisers that Cheney now has telling her she can do these things, and if the leadership in the Senate continues to be as spineless as Harry Reid has been recently, she may well get that power she seeks in the Senate. Just because the Constitution says she is limited in her powers, the Senate can always vote to change that, and considering the strange and frightening things we have seen in our government for the last 8 years, if McCain/Palin win on 11/4, it would not surprise me if it happened the way she envisions it! It is enough to scare me out of many of good night's sleep and make plans for going underground to protect my rights and my country in the near future.
