New Questions Arise Over McCain's Health

The New York Times reporter Lawrence Altman, a medical doctor himself, finds that "serious gaps remain in the public's knowledge about the health of the presidential and vice-presidential nominees," which is "a striking departure from recent campaigns, in which many candidates and their doctors were more forthcoming."

Of McCain, the Times reports:

If elected, Senator John McCain of Arizona, 72, the Republican nominee, would be the oldest man to be sworn in to a first term as president and the first cancer survivor to win the office. The scars on his puffy left cheek are cosmetic reminders of the extensive surgery he underwent in 2000 to remove a malignant melanoma.

Last May, his campaign and his doctors released nearly 1,200 pages of medical information, far more than the three other nominees. But the documents were released in a restricted way that leaves questions, even confusion, about his cancer.

A critical question concerns inconsistencies in medical opinions about the severity of his melanoma; if the classification of his melanoma is more severe, it would increase the statistical likelihood of death from a recurrence of the cancer. [...]

By not allowing reporters to interview him or his doctors extensively about his entire medical history, he has made it impossible to get a complete picture of his diagnoses and treatment.

Both Barack Obama and Joe Biden released recent medical records to the Times showing that they were healthy, though Altman notes that Biden's documents "did not indicate whether he had had a test in recent years to detect any new aneurysm," and Obama's most recent check-up was in January 2007.

Meanwhile, "Nothing is known publicly about Ms. Palin's medical history," Altman reports, "aside from the much-discussed circumstances surrounding the birth of her fifth child last April. Ms. Palin has said that her water broke while she was at a conference in Dallas and that she flew to Anchorage, where she gave birth to her son Trig hours after landing.

"Last week Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Ms. Palin, said the governor declined to be interviewed or provide any health records."

The issues of John McCain's age and health have repeatedly been pushed, with much resistance, into the heart of the political discussion. Prompted in part by the selection of Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee, the topic crested with the release of a political advertisement by Brave New Films PAC calling attention to McCain's history of skin cancer and the need for more information about his medical records.

(Watch Brave New Films' original video regarding McCain's heath record secrecy and sign the open letter calling for full disclosure of his medical records.)

Someone needs to demand that all four candidates (1) have a thorough physical and (2) disclose their results and their medical histories in an orderly and open manner for professional review.

Maybe the AMA could oversee the disclosure so there isn't a free-for-all but it is not acceptable that either party be permitted to keep voters in the dark on this fundamental issue.

Frankly, I'm a little shocked that someone as active as Barack has not seen a doctor since January 2007. I get a physical every year and periodically check to see that everything is working - Michelle should be kicking his butt to get to a doctor on a regular, annual basis.

A woman, in her forties, pregnant with her fifth child, who is known to be a special needs child, whose water breaks when she's in Texas, gets on a plane and flies to Alaska. You're kidding, right?

McCain's Melanoma

I was wondering about McCain after watching the last debate. His left cheek was very swollen. As he has been diagnosed and treated for melanoma on his head he should disclose his current prognosis on the melanoma.

I'm rather worried about McCain's irrational behavior and thinking that he might already have signs of brain metastasis. Either that, or he's really imbibed some nasty cool-aid since he last ran in 2000.

Mystery medical records

McCain's age demands that a full disclosure to the voting public be made. His cancer history underscores the importance of full disclosure. As for Palin, her health seems obvious. What may not be obvious are other revelations in her medical history -- abortion? STD? ...something less life threatening, but more embarrassing. Given the likelihood that a VP Palin would assume the presidency, everything should be an open book.

INCLUDE BASIC MENTAL STATUS EVALS IN ALL EXAMS

AlterNet Readers

Here is a letter I wrote to Dr. Lawrence Altman yesterday on presidential health

Two basic points-

- Destigmatize mental health evaluations as part of exams
- Modify the 25th amendment to US Constitution on unbiased scientific presidential disability evaluation

Dr Altman,

Thank you for your very helpful and timely column today in New York Times on Presidential and candidate’s health. Congratulations to you.

Appended below is a blog link I did last year emphasizing mental health issues among presidents and candidates with some useful links therein.

Also as noted in my blog is that my friend and colleague Dr. Marc Micozzi lead an effort at the prestigious College of Physician of Philadelphia to seriously tackle the issue of US Presidential Health including possible modification (in my opinion necessary) of the 25th amendment to the US Constitution with the assistance of Sen. Arlen Specter and others.

Be Well,

Something to think about.....

Given his age, and his POW status, and his recent medical history - McShame needs to disclose his full medical records! His erratic behavior, mood swings, and cancer survivor status really should give everyone pause. When Reagan came to office and the press would ask him questions for which he had no answers - made the public "feel sorry" for him; as it turns out he ended up with Alzheimer's - which he probably had back then but no one wants to talk about that!

This time there is too much on the line! The fact that should (God forbid) he die in office, this country will be left to continue it's downward spiral in the hands of a very inept V.P. without a clue!

PHYSICAL HEALTH NOT THE REAL PRIORITY

The mental health of the candidates is more important. What kinds of medication have they taken in the last 5 years? Obama seems stable and highly intelligent. Biden, to my knowledge has not exhibited any instabilty despite some very trying times in his life. McCain seems unsure of himself, perpetually angry and not quite in control. Palin creates her own world and is not at all realistic. When she said early on that she "didn't blink" I was concerned. There are times when a person should blink. But I do believe that she doesn't. She acts on impulse and right or wrong, just moves on. Not a woman I want in charge. She is refusing to divulge her hedical records. The others have done so. After 8 years of Bush we are entitled to know about the state of mind of our elected officials. Thanks, ANNA
