After his "Meet the Press" appearance, during which he endorsed Barack Obama, Colin Powell stopped to answer reporters' questions outside the studio. As it happens, his remarks were nearly as interesting after the program as they were during.

Powell was asked about the relentless negativity of the McCain campaign, and Powell made no effort to hide his disappointment. Perhaps most importantly, Powell noted that the constant right-wing efforts to a) falsely label Obama as a Muslim; and b) make "Muslim" some kind of slur, not only undermines national unity, but also damages America's standing in the world. "Those types of images going out on Al Jazeera are killing us around the world," Powell said.

He went on to express his disgust for Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) neo-McCarthyism. "We have got to stop this kind of nonsense," Powell said, "pull ourselves together, and remember that our great strength is in our unity and in our diversity."

Tying it all together, Powell concluded, "We can't judge our people and hold our elections on that kind of basis. Yes, that kind of negativity troubled me. And the constant shifting of the argument, I was troubled a couple of weeks ago when in the middle of the crisis the campaign said, 'We're going to go negative,' and they announced it. 'We're going to go negative and attack his character through Bill Ayers.' And now I guess the message this week is we're going to call him a socialist. Mr. Obama is now a socialist, because he dares to suggest that maybe we ought to look at the tax structure that we have. Taxes are always a redistribution of money. Most of the taxes that are redistributed go back to those who pay them, in roads and airports and hospitals and schools. And taxes are necessary for the common good. And there's nothing wrong with examining what our tax structure is or who should be paying more or who should be paying less, and for us to say that makes you a socialist is an unfortunate characterization that isn't accurate."

Powell has gotten a good look at what's become of his Republican Party, and he really doesn't like what he sees.

Digg!

It was Great to see this Great man Once again out speaking to the Public. Yes this Ol' Liberal has always held Gen Powell in Great Regard.
Call it intution, Common Sense or just genreal distrust of Republicans ....But I knew they were Using Powells Credibility to sell a BS invasion. It was truly painful to watch Powells presentation to the UN.At that Point I was not sure if He'd Sold His Soul, or was just a victim of his own sense of Duty to 'Serve the President'.His Interview on MTP proved the latter.
Had Powell Not done the dirty work for this admin...He could have handily been the First Black President.
I was Very Proud to hear him discuss the Muslim Issue 'So What' is exactly what true Americans Say when they hear this UnAmerican Slander. In fact it should also be what a Good Chrisitian says Too.
What he Failed to point out about the Iraq War was that IF His 'Over whelming Force' stratedgy would have been employed in the First place the Invasion and the aftermath would have gone far smoother and been 'accomplished' within a shorter period of time.
Sen McCain did Nothing but attempt to rectify this Fuck Up with 'his' so called 'Surge'. Rummy's 'Go Cheap' stratedgy cost US Lives, and continues to cost US 10 Billion a month- something McCain SHOULD NOT be patting himself on the back for - Nor even taking credit for a 'New' tactic. McCains 'Surge' Became Our Purge. Why does McCain fail to equate this Unjustified War and Our Econopmy. Why does he not recognize (or care about) 'the Conditions on the Ground' HERE?Seems that Statement only Refers to Iraq and their OIl...Not US and our economy, our sacrifics or our future as a soveriegn Nation.
What I found Laughable was the stupidity of Brokow to suggest Gen Powell was endorsing Obama because he was Black. Funny I don't recall him supporting Jackson or Sharpton, or Braun. So the insinuation was Insulting- even to the viewers (with any brain of their own)
But What truely brought Tears to my eyes (really) and filled my Heart with Patritoic Joy was Powell's remarks about being called a 'Muslim'....Yes Gen Powell Many Real Americans whole heartedly agree ..The repsonse to such a UnAmericna comment should always Be 'So What'!
Again We must Begin to Use the Terms which have Been Abused and misconstrued by the 'Right', CORRECTLY.
It is UNAmerican to pre judge someone on their Race, The culture, their Releigion or their Sexual Orientation
It is UNAmeircan to Relinguish YOUR rights and RESPONSIBILITIES In a Democratic society to Any Public Servant- esp a President. NO President Supercedes Our Founding Documents and What they Prescribed. The Phrase 'Because He's the president' is not only Laziness ,It is undermining our very foundation, these people might as well just say 'Because he's the Dictator'!
I would Welcome Gen Powell into either Admin- guidance for Obama, Reins on McCain.
Perhaps the 'Blinded by Military service'Crowd will actually listen to this General, since They found it very easy to dismiss, and Malign Gen Clark.

During his interview on Meet the Press, Colin Powell took on the lie that Obama is a Muslim in a way that needed to be done. Obama is a Cristian, but what if he wasn't. Does that make him unsuitable to be President? What do we tell the young Muslim child who aspires to be President? Sorry kid you don't qualify. How Un-American! Hopefully, General Powell moved a few minds on this one. Your support for the Iraq war was wrong headed, but in my eyes, you have gone a long way in redeeming yourself.

And The Taxes Also

I often wonder what most people are thinking, when they scream about taxes? Reminds me of a conversation with an elderly neighbor. He and his wife had never had children, and he was complaining about having to pay taxes for the school system, given the fact they had never had kids, thereby not using the system. He ranted for a few minutes, and when I had a chance to speak, I just asked him about all the other benefits he was receiving from the city, county, state, and federal government.

He then asked me, "What benefits?" I supressed my chuckle, and told him about the paved street we lived on, the police, firefighters, trash collection, and a few others that he was familiar with, and he stood there dumfounded! Can you imagine? This was a man in his 70's, retired from a well-paying state job, that had NO IDEA where his tax dollars went, and how they were spent!! The really silly thing is, he did not have any idea where his salary for 35 years came from...TAXES!!

Without taxes, the government would collapse!! As Gen. Powell stated, our tax moneys return to us in the form of services that we as individuals depend upon, and cannot accomplish on our own!! This also reflects on the sorry system of education we have in this country, sending people out into the world with no concept of how the government functions, thereby having a knee-jerk, false concept that taxes are bad!!

Considering how foul this Presidential campaign has sunk, we're truly in the world of Orwell, up is down, good is evil, and my god is bigger than your god!! Nov 4th can't come fast enough for me!!

Powell's fraud at UN is directly responisble for the US war of aggression and crimes in Iraq.

His hands are soaking with the blood of 1.2 million Iraqis and 4 thousand US soldiers.

As a young officer serving US crimes in Vietnam, Powell was responsible for trying to whitewashe the Mai Lai massacre.

And this guys is hailed as a great man?

No wonder animals like Cheney and Bush have been in power for 8 years...

Obama, if he had a conscience, should have told Powell: Thanks but no thanks!

straight! I commend Colin Powell for his endorsement. Most of all I praise Barack Obama for taking on the daunting job to run for President in what may still be a racist society. Above all these are well educated, sane and deliberate men. We need them. So, stop distributing your drivel or you will sound like Sarah Palin. I hope she is not your "ideal woman".

Revenge is a dish best served cold, and I always enjoy seeing it done with style. I believe Powell is a basically honourable man who allowed misplaced loyalty to lead him into evil. He was not part of the inner White House circle and was an all too willing tool, not a prime mover.

I do not understand the carping about an endorsement that can only help Obama and harm McCain. Yes, Powell erred badly and I imagine he finds it hard to forgive himself. That is the cost of being prey to human fraility. But his interview showed that he does grasp the essential nature of what America should be, and that alone differentiates him from Bush, Cheney, McCain, Palin etc.

Know your true enemy and welcome lost sheep back into the fold. Besides which, I found the interview great fun to watch.

...has zero credibility as far as I'm concerned after his fictitious presentation to the UN. Actually, I've thought poorly of him since he opposed gays being able to serve in the military. And now Obama's talking about making him an advisor in his administration...pure political theater.

....at his Republican party and he really doesn't like what he sees".

Better late than never. Let's hope he's ready to make amends for selling out to Bush. He no doubt thought he'd have some actual power and standing as Secretary of State, not realizing the extent to which Cheney, Rove, Rumsfield and Co. were pulling Dubya's puppet strings.
And to his credit, he did finally resign.

A Negro For President?

A Negro for President?
You’ve got to be kidding.

(AP)"Poll: Racial views steer some away from Obama
One-third of polled white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks"

I am told I am handsome (my photograph is at http://www.Psychotherapy.eBoard.com ) and a genius. Because of my achievements as a scientist (I can reasonably claim to be the foremost scientist in the world in my field), I am listed in Who's Who in America (2008 and earlier editions) where I have lived for 42 years and in Who's Who in the World (2009 edition). But I have to live in a tiny room in the ghetto with poor blacks which is a lot better than having to live, as I did, in a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) library for six and a half months sleeping on the chairs at night and going without food for up to 3 weeks at a time (in principle, I am a multimillionaire in India, even in dollar terms) after having been mugged in a Harvard seminar because my work had put me in a position of leadership in my field. All because of my race (I was told I was "colored", never mind if technically a Caucasian).

A Negro was made Chief of the Army Staff before the first invasion of Iraq because, just as policemen who are low caste Hindus are the most aggressive toward Muslims in India, blacks in America are the most aggressive toward brown people. Obama has already promised to "invade" Pakistan. If he becomes president, God help the world, including America.
