SNL Disaster: Sarah Palin Shoots Herself in the Foot

Posted by Robert Kubey, Huffington Post at 1:39 AM on October 20, 2008.

Seriously, what was the McCain-Palin Campaign thinking?

Sarah Palin joined SNL tonight and proved once again that McCain was unwise to have her on the ticket and even more unwise not to veto this appearance. In isolation, Palin's very brief moments were, in themselves the problem.

But consider what people tuning in experienced, especially her conservative base fans and any of the young people they hoped to attract to their failed campaign. SNL has long been Saturday Night Dead and without Tina Fey there was nothing worth seeing. Josh Brolin hosted, reporting thay playing W taught him that neither W, nor he should ever be president.

Then in sketches and Weekend Update viewers were reminded of the economic difficulty the country finds itself in and by now we know that the economy has done nothing but hurt John McCain. Thus, over and over, viewers were reminded of McCain's biggest problem, besides Sarah Palin.

Then, no viewer could be sure when Gov. Palin would appear thought might guess she'd appear on Weekend Update, but one watched all the awful bilge wondering if she might appear in a tasteless sketch. She didn't but millions of viewers were exposed to scores of fart jokes, a sketch about a guy who would shoot a ping pong ball from his rear end, and Palin being compared to Dan Quayle. No helping hand of any kind was extended to Palin.

Often these appearances help humanize the candidate, but we already know she is human and capable of error and has a sense of humor. But now we know better than before that her judgement and that of Sen. McCain is indefensible.

Cap that off with one of the most tough and incisive Obama ads of the campaign purchased midway though the program. I just shook my head and thought, man, the Obama campaign doesn't miss a trick and maybe the McCain campaign really is being run by those who wish him to lose and lose badly.

Did you notice that Tina Fey walked right past your arse as though you didn't exist? LOL
Which was appropriate, by the way, since your appearance was the most nothing thing I have seen on any show in ages.
Why don't you go home and take care of that grandson that you pretend is yours?

Lightweight

I think "disaster" is putting too strong an edge on it.

Palin came across as a lightweight, sure. But she also showed she can take a joke. People like to see that in a politician. And it's very hard to see the class warfare and slide to autocracy that threaten behind that dazzling, slightly dipsy smile. She simply doesn't look as dangerous as she is.

This SNL performance isn't a nail in her political coffin. Her career on the national stage depends on her ability to parrot the Republican lines given her, without qualm or concern for truth. She isn't yet at Reagan's level for uninformed glibness, but give her time.

Wow, that has to be the most horribly written article I have ever tried to read.

Would someone please decipher this paragraph into English for me?

"Then, no viewer could be sure when Gov. Palin would appear thought might guess she'd appear on Weekend Update, but one watched all the awful bilge wondering if she might appear in a tasteless sketch."

I generally try to be tolerant, because I'm not perfect myself and I'm sure no-one is getting rich writing these pieces, but come on now... how long would it take to proof an article as short as this? My 8th grader produces better copy.

Unfortunately, the poor proofing detracts greatly from an otherwise good, if pretty overtly obvious, article.

I do love the different perspectives that Alternet provides, but someone really needs to invest in the time it takes to proof-read an article.

Otherwise, I agree with everything the author said in the article. The points made (though obfuscated by the poor writing) are right on, and Palin and McCain are indeed absolutely clueless.

Did anyone notice the donkey?

Did anyone notice the donkey behind Palin in the opening act? Why isn't anyone commenting on this? The SNL cast was completely making fun of her and she never seemed to get that they were laughing at her. I guess that's what happens when you think you are so much better than everyone else. We have already had one delusional administration - we can't afford another one!

The Audacity of MSNBC

While watching Morning Joe and Pat B. this morning, as they were braying about the qualifications of Sarah Palin and having the audacity to compare her to Barack Obama, was a classic example of stags in rut and doe in heat. These men are so infatuated that their objectivity is in serious question...they are suffering from testosterone poisoning.

We keep hearing from them that Palin is more qualified than Obama, with her being the governor of Alaska (with a population of Memphis) and the former mayor of a small town of 7,000 people, and all. This is an intellectually DISHONEST argument...and it says more about those who are making it than it does about Palin (and it speaks volumes about her).

There is ample evidence that Palin is lacking a lot more than fun-facts and figures, as these guys keep saying that she just needs more training. Just watch her objective interviews again...both of them. She has the undeniable inability to think on her feet if pressed past the first layer of memorized talking points. This is undeniable even to the McCain campaign, as they have prevented any further objective interviews, realizing the impending disastrous effects.

She is so spaced out in her rambling recitations that the audience actually forgets what the question was. She has shown that she can "act" if given a script, but is a lost ball in high weeds if she has to wing it.

These weren't just "tough interviews" as Pat B. keeps trying to convince us, rather, they were windows into her brain of how she processes information. She blew the simplest questions if they probed into the foundations of her beliefs and thoughts. The inner workings of her brain is not a pretty sight.

This is in such sharp contrast to Senator Obama who has held hundreds of interviews and displayed a mastery of the facts, history, judgment and the ability for original thought.

Palin's nomination was a stunt...which the American people saw early on, contributing significantly to the drop in the polls that McCain has suffered.

"...maybe the McCain campaign really is being run by those who wish him to lose and lose badly."

What would be the motivation? What advantage would the Republicans gain by having him lose the election? Palin in 2012 running for President? WWRD*?

SNL is not Dead, it is fantastic

First, SNL has been doing fantastic stuff lately. It has a cast who is really talented. What they have done with political figures is really good.

As to Palin....who knows.......what DOES impress those who are undecided at this point...the color of their eyes, the color of their shirt on election day?? I mean, they are not looking at the world through the eyes of people who read Alter Net. They are people who have gone through 8 years of Bush AND ARE STILL UNDECIDED. I do not know.

So, the Palin show...maybe they DID like her as she rocked to her rap song which told how terrible she is. She rapped to their reference to her aerial killing, she rocked as they brought a furry little moose out and they referenced her shooting them, she rocked as they referenced her love for oil and drilling. To ME, that is unfathomable.....to the undecided...WHO KNOWS?!?!?!

I am not angry at SNL, they did not do a flattering showing of her. Tina Fey,in an interview said that the Mc camp called and called for her to be on, so I am in hope that we will have our chance.

I am more worried about the fact that I just got an email that Mc is sending out letters and making calls all around the Ayers crap. That bast*** is saying that Obama is responsible for every person he has ever sat down to a meeting with. I am SO glad that we do not do that stuff. One has to believe in the higher road.

Check out the political maps, they are inspiring.

There is NO need to attack SNL.

She got what she wanted

Gov. Palin wanted to go on SNL for whatever reason she had and for whatever reason the McC campaign had. SNL relented, they did not have to put her on. The show was constrained by the demands of the campaign and the craziness SNL can sometimes bring. (Remember the Halloween show last year when Hillary was the headliner and that tall skinny guy who was running also showed up? What was his name? Yeah, Barack Obama) That's the kind of stuff they do. This show was as tame as they could be and still get some laughs without being insulting. A case of confused identity and waving your arms sitting behind a desk were nothing to write home about. A debate between Tina and Sarah would have been more fun but it would have opened Sarah to more people poking fun at her and that is what the campaign wanted to avoid. This is what they got and the campaign was not too upset. It won't be enough to turn anything around in these last two weeks. Obama is leading the polls in Florida. And other red states are turning purple and further into blue.

The experienced and seasoned writers and talented comedic actors on SNL knew they would have no trouble dancing rings around Sarah. So she smiled happily and “rocked” through a blistering, fierce, critical frontal assault on her shallowness and complete disrespect for wildlife and ethnic minority Eskimos. Any other candidate would have understood this criticism and marched off the set at rehearsal. You should realize then that she has spent only a matter of months in the “lower 48".

Palin's just trying to distract the public from this shocking discovery:

Racy photos have emerged of Sarah Palin posing with alien beer during her beauty queen days. A young Palin is clearly seen in an advertisement for Old Clandathuu’s Best, the galaxy's #1 lager.

This was basically a vanilla appearance by Sarah Palin. She was almost a prop while everyone else carried the opening skit and the SNL News skit.

Even so, I think her appearance achieved what the McCain campaign wanted. It helped to soften the sting of Tiny Fey's portrayal of Sarah Palin. Now at least they can claim Sarah knows how to take a joke.

Palin misjudged how to appear on SNL and lost whatever dignity she had left
Posted by: doinaheckuvajob on Oct 20, 2008 6:39 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
They made a huge fool of her and lampooned her mercillessly.

Any smart politician would never have agreed to appear around sketches that so soundly wreck their image. She didn't even clue in on how bad it was for her. A smart politician would have refused to be in or appear around such sketches. They would have demanded to be portrayed softer, better, or refused to appear unless/until portrayed better. She never even said, that was a good joke but that's not what I'm like at all... and she looked very uncomfortable throughout and even upset when Palin did the pageant thing and "also" when the moose was shot during the rap segment. Sitting there and joining the dance to the rap was really bad judgment and made her look like a joke. To her credit, yes she can take a joke and deliver one with some ability. But that's not what a credible politician is supposed to do. Her dignity was destroyed.

It's symptomatic of Palin and the latest Republicans idea of doing anything to be elected and rationalizing any actions they take because they're on a mission from god therefore no matter how ridiculous, how corrupt, how much of a joke or lie they've made, they think they're invulnerable to the consequences.

This was yet another misjudgment by a campaign plagued with them, whose leader McCain can't tell the difference between failed stunts and real leadership to solve the country's problems.
