McCain Shows Disdain at Debate: Calls Obama 'That One'

Posted by Seth Colter Walls, Huffington Post at 8:01 PM on October 7, 2008.

Sounds like McCain is buying into the hate rhetoric spouted at his own rallies. Click through for more analysis.

During a discussion about energy, McCain punctuates a contrast with Obama by referring to him as "that one," while once again not looking in his opponent's direction (merely jabbing a finger across his chest). That's not going to win McCain any Miss Congeniality points. Nor will it reassure any voters who believe McCain is improperly trying to capitalize on Obama's "otherness."

This goes beyond refusing to look at Obama in the first debate. With this slightly dehumanizing phrase, McCain may have just played into the emerging narrative of Obama-hate that has been sprouting at McCain-Palin rallies.

Darren Davis, a professor at Notre Dame who specializes in role of race in politics, sent a comment about McCain's "that one" line to the Huffington Post. "It speaks volumes about how McCain feels personally about Obama. Whomever said the town hall format helps McCain is dead wrong," Davis wrote.

A few minutes later, Obama spokesman Bill Burton placed his foot on the pedal ever so slightly. In an email blast to reporters, he asks: "Did John McCain just refer to Obama as 'that one'?" No other commentary followed, nor did any mention of race. But expect the post-debate analysis to get a little focused on whether McCain just made a regrettable faux pas.

That debate-town hall meeting was really painful watching McCain floating around like a zombie. What was he doing? At least one time, he floated right in front of Obama while he was answering a question! McCain might be old but he also demonstrates that the elderly can have ADD. Feeling sorry for McCain is an option except that his style is also heavy with contempt, arrogance, and hostility. Pointing to Obama as "that one" was a horrible moment that illustrated McCain's contempt for his competitor and, most likely, for the rest of us. He left the debate without spending any time with the people there. Certainly seems like McCain's campaign has crashed and burned. It's OVER .

Dignity and poise and calmly allowing McCain to hang himself with his own worn out rope. Obama displayed all the qualities of leadership we so desperately need, while McCain flailed around like the fish out of water he has become.
He also lied. A lot.

was McSame blurting out "you people" and saying Obama was "uppity".

A sad display of unstatesmanlike conduct and all too revealing what goes on in his aging mind.

Still, at least he has the backup of a Veep candidate who can...eh? What? She what? Oh shit....

Missed an awesome opportunity to tie McCain to Bin laden when Mac was patting himself on the back recalling the Aid & comfort provided to 'Afghani Freedom fighters' in the '80's.Think Mac's Puppet masters shit their pants when he opened THAT can of Worms from Bodies they thought they had buried? Lucky for them Obama did not remind the Audience WHO those 'Freedom Fighter' Were! But one more Bridge to nowhere regarding Ayers Should indicate it is time to really pull the gloves Off.
Hell We don't even need to go back that far.. Phil Gramm is One of Our nations most effective Domestic terrorist. Bin Laden Killed 3000 and Brought down a few buildings..Phil Gramm has Killed our entire Economy and led our Children to the Global Auction Block! A Murder Suicide of a Family of 6 was found yesterday..How many more acts of violence will occur because of this Economic Attack? Hell Phil is the direct Connection between the Financial meltdown, the Blood for Oil and our economic Depression..Phil & his Wife are Evidence enough of Mac's complicity in All three National Disasters!
Sarah of course has her own bodies to step over. Her Alaska Independence Affiliation is a kin to the Michigan Milita in ideology - hatred of the US Gov't. And It's 'golden boy' bombed a Federal Building not just killing Fed Workers but Children at Day care!
And her affilation with a church which claims to be the Refuge after Armegeddon is the Exact Sociopathic dream Charlie Manson Fantasized about Death Valley! Add to that her Anti abortion Fervor and it leads US to those who Bombed Planned Parenthood clinics, Murdered Docs and Pipe bombed the Atalnta Oylmpics
Oh We are building a Bridge to Domestic & International terrorist ..But it is orginating From the McCain/Palin Camp!

any sympathy for this failing and falling old fool? Not a bit! And his running mate is a snake in the grass. But there are too many voters out there who approve of this dynamic duo. Maybe John and Sarah should go hand in hand to the glue factory.
