When Their Supporters Call Obama a Terrorist and Demand His Assassination, McCain and Palin Remain Silent

McCain and Palin condone the worst Obama smears with deafening silence.

Everyone has their threshold. I've just reached mine. Thanks to AmericaBlog for pointing me to this and this. Also a hat tip to TPM Election Central.

John "Country Last" McCain and Sarah Palin held some truly hate filled rallies on Monday. Here's a montage from McCain's hatefest 2008

During this rally, a McCain supporter answers the question posed by Senator Country Last, "Who is the real Barack Obama?" The unmistakable answer: terrorist!

McCain says nothing.

From The Washington Post and AmericaBlog on Palin's rally:

"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.

"Boooo!" said the crowd.

"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.
"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

Palin went on to say that "Obama held one of the first meetings of his political career in Bill Ayers's living room, and they've worked together on various projects in Chicago."

Palin says nothing.

I understand why McCain and Palin are going negative. The economy is falling apart around us, and they have no solutions. They are losing in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Virginia. Obama, despite McCain's repeated claims, understands what a surge is, because he's pulling one off right now.

But the current political environment does not excuse remaining silent when a candidate for president is referred to as a "terrorist" in your presence. A desire to win does not excuse remaining silent during a threat on the life of a U.S. Senator at one of your rallies. There are no excuses for evil such as this. John McCain and Sarah Palin, the GOP and all who support them have lost all rights to legitimate argument. They are liars. They are wrong. They are evil. Yes, evil. They are one small step short of inciting violence at their rallies. They are letting physical threats go unchallenged.

I was at Obama's rally at Independence Square in Philadelphia back in April. When he mentioned Hillary Clinton's name, the crowd booed, and he told them to stop. Barack Obama intervened when his supporters booed his opponent. He called for civility. Yet, when faced with supporters who label senators terrorists and call for their assassination, John McCain and Sarah Palin said nothing.

This is how evil spreads, from domestic violence to genocide. People in a position to stop it choose to do nothing.

John McCain is obsessed with his own honor. No one believes in the myth of the maverick as thoroughly as he does. He's called for civility in campaign tactics while lying about Obama's position on sex education. That's ok. It's politics. If he weren't a bit of a hypocrite, I would get suspicious. But the man who would make his name synonymous with honor stoked hatred in his rally today and let one of his senate colleagues be referred to as a terrorist.

We know what America does to terrorists.

And while Obama and William Ayers served on a board together, this is nothing like McCain's pro-terrorist history. He voted repeatedly to protect domestic terrorists who bomb abortion clinics. He counts as an "old friend" one G. Gordon Liddy, an ex-convict who served time for the Watergate break-in, plotted to kill journalists, firebomb a think tank and called for violent resistance against the U.S. government. While Obama and Ayers's relationship is minimal and old news, McCain was on Liddy's show this year during the campaign and has accepted $1,000 from him as recently as February. So who's the terrorist?

Now to Sarah Palin.

This simple-minded, overwhelmed, frightened, delusional nitwit thinks she's doing "big things" by going on "the attack." She presumes to challenge Obama at his level as if she had earned her position rather than having been selected by an old white man for the job. She is filled with pride and self-adoration. She is a fool.

This weekend, she said Obama was "paling around with terrorists." (a lie debunked by CNN). The irony is almost crippling to my mental functions. This is from the woman whose church says terrorism vs. Israel is God's judgment. This is a woman who was so close to the radical, separatist Alaska Independence Party, that people thought she was a member. She spoke to their convention, and her husband was a seven-year member of this organization whose founder was killed in a "plastic explosives deal gone bad."

Palin would know about "paling around with terrorists." She fornicates with one.

A few weeks ago CPL posted a story which seemed plausible but couldn't be verified. It said Palin was a racist. While the specific truth of that story is still unsettled, the pattern is clear: this ticket is painting Obama as the "other" and someone to be feared. This campaign is counting on stoking prejudice and racism. The McCain-Palin campaign is grotesque and dangerous. They are picking up where Hillary left off, but have gone much, much farther. They are presiding over hate rallies where people feel free to yell out murderous threats, and the candidates smile it off and keep going, essentially endorsing such mob mentality.

I want to know who still supports this ticket. I want to know because if anything should happen to Barack Obama. If he so much as slips on the jetway or stubs his toe playing basketball, I'm holding John McCain and Sarah Palin responsible, and I'm holding those who vote for them responsible for doing nothing to stop an atmosphere of violence. Enough is enough.

Those of you who have retained your soul and your senses, I ask you do to the following in response to this insane and hate-filled campaign.

  1. Make sure you are registered to vote. Go to voteforchange.com
  2. Volunteer. The campaign built on hope, rather than hate, needs election poll workers in key states like Virginia and Pennsylvania (big up Voter Suppression Wiki!). We need phone calls from home. Donate money.
  3. Spread the word about McCain and Palin's dangerous beliefs and outlandish hypocrisies. Send these to your undecided or right-leaning friends in swing states.
  4. Pray, meditate or otherwise send positive vibes to protect Obama and our country from these forces of darkness masquerading as legitimate political candidates.

Don't be one of those people that recognizes wrong and evil and does nothing to stop it. We are all responsible for creating the world we want to see. Let's go about doing that.

. . . your fears are not yet justified.

If the Fourth Reich is being manufactured in America, it is not on its way in this election. Obama will win and his America will be the Weimar Republic. The economy will continue to falter and though blameless, Obama will suffer because "it happened on his watch."

If the Fourth Reich is coming, it will be after Obama, not with McCain/Palin.

Most people in the US don't realize that under Bush 800 "detention camps" have been built. They sit empty now, waiting for...you?

Anyone who doubts the fullness of the nazi parallels isn't paying attention. Hitler was a family hero of the Bushes, and his tactics have been replicated in numerous ways by Dubya's administration.

why does alternet destroy it's own credability by posting this stuff in a disengenuos way? i didn't hear any of that in video attached, so why is a video in the video section, headlined as being mccain endorsing his supporters call for the assisnation of obama? what the hell has happened to alternets journalistic integrity (guess it went out the window when it posted that newsworthy video, "blue balled")

A man was arrested at a gathering for Bush recently for wearing a tee shirt that said "Impeach Bush". But Yelling 'kill him' is OK? Sarah Palin is beneath contempt, but the numbers of people who show up at these rallies and truly believe that she is the answer to our problems is shocking. This administration has bred a mean spirited population. Not long ago no one would have listened to her but now she has a huge following. And Palin thinks that Obama ran with the wrong crowd? I think it's the other way around. Hollering "kill him" in any crowd is wrong. She already has privileges. ANNA

Not "negative campaigning". NO!

It is blatant HATE MONGERING.

Don't let them get away with it!

Make msnbc talk about it, MAKE THEM REPORT the death threats, i.e. "KILL HIM", leveled against Obama at McCain/Palin rallies.

MAKE THEM REPORT IT & TALK ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT MATTERS & WE CAN'T LET IT GO BY!

An attack on Barack and Michelle is an attack on all of us.

Ask for the comment line:

There are some who choose to shoot down an extraordinary man like Barack Obama with small thinking and petty attacks. If they think their absurd and low slams are going to deter or distract either Obama or the supporters behind him, then they are gravely mistaken.

Yes We Can.

The party that supposedly loves small town values and moral values and following the teachings of Jesus always knock the breath out of me with their shocking displays of hate and love of war, even unnecessary war. Joe Sixpack and Sarah Hockeymom seem to like being told what to say and what to think and obviously don't look beyond that--facts don't matter--they'll suck up lies like a bunch of Hoover vaccum cleaners, so are the shock jocks and Fox talking heads with their repeated messages of hate having an impact? Sure appears that way.

McSame/Failin have slid down another notch on my pole by not addressing some of this, and I didn't even realize they could go much lower. Maybe they'll be satisfied when Obama is assassinated? That seems to be their goal 'cause they'll do and say anything to win.

Hey, the AP reports that McCain, might I say, *palled around* with a group linked to Nazi collaborators and right-wing South American death-squads.

Hey, is it any wonder that the Neo-Nazis want to assassinate Obama, and someone calls for Obama's assassination at a McCain campaign rally??

By the way:
Saying that Obama is a terrorist simply because Bill Ayers and Obama once both worked for education reform together in Chicago is pushing the truth a bit.
(Oh, that Obama. What a terrorist -- working for EDUCATION REFORM, and all!... Put him in Gitmo, I say!...)
(Sarcasm in parentheses.)

You were doing really good making your points. I agree wholeheartedly. UNTIL you just couldn't refrain from throwing in the line, "They're starting where Hillary left off."
Hillary is NOT a racist. She DID NOT make a racist remark. She SAID, "It took a PRESIDENT" TO SIGN CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION into LAW. Only those people who see or hear RACIST in every remark they hear took that as a RACIST remark and ADDED "white" president.
I voted for Dennis Kucinich in the primary election and when he dropped out, I was torn between Hillary and Barack. I chose to support Hillary because in the FIRST speech I HEARD from Obama, he talked of "fixing" Social Security. The ONLY "fixing" Social Security NEEDS is for politicians to keep their grubby hands OFF the money and stop spending it on other things and then whining when there's no money left and blaming on those "nasty baby boomers" who've paid into it for 20 to 40 years and have the audacity to "RETIRE" and "DRAIN" THE SYSTEM. How DARE they? Never mind the FACT that most of those politicians are MILLIONAIRES but still collect their SS checks. If that make ME a RACIST because I didn't support Obama from the start, SO BE IT!
What John Dishonorable McSame and Failin' Palin are doing is despicable and they should be called out on it but throwing in your Hillary Hater dig against HER, you dilute your very real, very RIGHT message.
And just in case you might want to label ME and anti_Obama voter, I DID vote for Obama and sent back my ballot already.
I voted for Obama because another Republican in the White House is UNTHINKABLE and dangerous to my health and life and many others in my generation. And the 3rd party candidates don't stand a chance. I just wish Obama would have insisted on getting Bush out of the picture and all his cronies before jumping on the bailout bandwagon and I wish he would not be such a war hawk or threatening more wars. That's the McSame play book and we don't need Obama USING THAT. And if Obama keeps the debate on the economy and jumps on McSame whenever he tries to change the subject to WAR, Obama will soar to victory over McSame and Flirty Girty.

The reason Mccain/Palin are silent is this. They still believe that out there, 8 or 9 million untapped evangelicals that need to be driven to the polls assuming they exist. They think that of the likely 20-30 million moderate/independent voters, at least half of them will automatically choose Mccain over Obama based on old media myths claiming that Mccain's a maverick "Independent" which Joe Biden already helped disprove once and for all. Unless Mccain/Palin actually come to realize that they're desperate culture smears will only alienate more moderate and independent voters, they'll still cling to the same old dirty ways. Interestingly, Obama is well aware of all this and is in fact doing what Dukakis and Kerry would never even think of trying to do when responding to culture smears. It's great that Obama is taking the economic populist route for what his victory will need. Obama may have killed his base for the most part but he will have to apologize and make by quitting his pandering to the GOP rightwing up once he wins in November.

I haven't read too many of the speeches at all, nor seen them, since I have no TV and don't even live in the US (I couldn't stand Reagan and there was no future in the country), but in the clip, there is a code word:

"angry barrage of insults".... First of all, everything McCain accuses the other side of doing, he does himself.

Secondly "angry"... That is the racist code word.

Whereby no one could be angrier than those fascist twats.

Robert Kennedy, John Kennedy, Martin Luther King. The right wing fascists and the corrupt mafia forces, and the well-healed rich sociopaths will make sure that Obama does not rock the boat. Either they will kill him before he puts his hand on that bible to take his oath of office or they will kill him afterwards. The superwealthy will not allow him to reduce their wealth and power, nor will the fascist neocons allow him to overturn all their efforts, regardless of what the American people want. Obama is a marked man. The rich, the military, the CEOs, Big Business, the Republicans, the white racist bigots, fundamental religionists, and the shock-jock brainwashed borderline mentally ill will make sure that Barack Obama does not live to change America. I wish the Secret Service could protect him, but when I see that a deranged psycho, living in his car, with no financial resources or organization supporting him almost killed Ronald Raygun, I have little hope that the SS will be able to keep him alive.

and I think it speaks to their ethics. Palin, with her extreme fundamentalist christian dogma, probably feels no problem with wishing death (and eternal damnation) on all who do not hold her narrow views. John McCain? He is lost in his ambition to be president. He is not a rabid religious nut, he is rabidly ambitious. I think both members of the Republican ticket would kill to achieve their ends. I don't think either one would have a problem with seeing their opponents assassinated -- I think they'd rejoice internally.

Bill Ayers

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The Weathermen bombed government buildings, several banks, police department headquarters and precincts, state and federal courthouses, and state prison administrative offices. Their targets were all government/military targets. None were civilian. So by definition they were not terrorists, they were insurgents. In addition they were bombing these targets IN RESPONSE to US terrorism in Vietnam and Laos, where the US *DID* bomb civilian targets on a daily basis. Among those terrorist bombers was none other than John McCain himself. The US government was defying the will of the American people by continuing to engage in terrorism against a country that never attacked the US, and non-violent protest had done little or nothing at that point to pressure the government to stop their criminal activities.

Mamma taught me that character counts. Calling out your people, even if they are your supporters, for asking for Obama's death and also for unjustly calling him a vicious name takes not enormous character but appropriate gentleman-like behavior.

McCain demonstrated he has none of that. He did NOT once belittle the idiotic guy who called Hillary Clinton a bitch. He DID call his own wife a CUNT in public!

Is this goofus running for dogcatcher of Podunk, Alabama or is he hoping to become president? Unfortunately for McCain, he is qualified for neither!

When I saw the twit-nitwit Pail-in utter those hate-filled words at several rallies, I felt like the picture of the Statue of Liberty when Kennedy died, holding her head in shame.

Palin is so ignorant and egotistic with no reason to be, she doesn't know what she's doing, inciting riots and violence simply to try to win a campaign. It won't work, it will go against the Thugs. Obama hasn't stooped to this level, and I don't think he will. He's far ahead in polls, and I dare hope to think we can have a president who has the intelligence, language, presence, education, and hope for our country as he has.

I learned a stellar fact today: the Democrats have registered 500,000 new voters while the McCluck people lost 28,000!

THAT WAS 40 YEARS AGO, this is NOW!!! and at the time Ayers did his thing, OBAMA was eight years old at the time. HE WAS A CHILD, and Palin was in kindergarten. OBAMA didn't have anything to do with his doings. GIVE ME A FREAKN BREAK!!! SARAH PALIN Seems to be the one spreading lies and terrorism in my opinion with all this garbage. This tie to Ayers is thinner than thread. A HUGE crock of horse-sshit! They both served on a board, they saw each other twice a year. That was it. WHOOP DEE DOO!!! Why in the hell don't you read and research this for yourself. This is a racist,slime-ball, toilet scum attempt to discredit and dishonor an honorable man. IT IS CRIMINAL!!!! If this PRO LIFE WITCH from WASILLA allows and is bent on exciting a crowd into mob mentality, and encouraging them to engage in murderous name calling what does that tell you????? SHE'S A FAKE! Sarah Palin condoned that speaker in her crowd who made a "kill him" mob-statement, stood at that podium, and said nothing, meant for it to happen. And she would be beats away from the RED PHONE, and Nuclear Numbers, and will help us get on track, yeah right? And Santa Claus is a Female COW in a RED PANT SUIT! This is really sick and extremely disturbing!!! I've spoken with several older Jewish people who have survived the Holocaust and they are shaking their heads and saying this sounds familiar. The whole climate looks familiar and that is truly frightening. And more than anything it is scary that nothing happened, not even a verbal slap on the wrist. Where was CNN, NBC, ABC CBS then? Why hasn't she been reprimanded? This should be spread all over everywhere that she incited this and condoned this behavior. It is slander at it's best! It is more than an attack. It sets a mind-set..sends the wrong message, This is serious folks, very very serious. If they continue down this path, where is really leading us? Sarah Palin talks about this 40 year old nonsense and lies, when the goose doesn't even read NEWSPAPERS! Sarah Palin engages in this hostile, racist, toilet bowl tactics when our nation is facing the worse economic upheaval and turmoil domestic and foreign since World War II and the Great Depression? This is the EMPTY, POT OF PISS THAT INSANE MCCAIN wants to focus on?????? THIS IS CRIMINAL!!! Nov 4th CAN'T GET HERE FAST ENOUGH!!!!
