Sarah Palin Has Never Actually Seen Russia From Alaska

Just when you thought the whole "I can see Russia from Alaska" thing couldn't get any funnier ... CNN's Gary Tuchman delivers the goods: it turns out that Sarah Palin has never seen Russia from Alaska.

Tuchman went up to the part of Alaska from which you can actually see Russia, a remote island called Little Diomede located just 2.4 miles from its Russian twin, Big Diomede.

It turns out Gary Tuchman's trip to Little Diomede sets him apart from Sarah Palin -- because she's never actually been there, nor has she set eyes on its neighbor in Russia.

Here's the video of Tuchman's report:

Tuchman says that only 150 people live on Little Diomede, and that the town of Diomede has no streets and no cars. The poverty rate is over 40%, there is no television, and the only practical way to reach it is by helicopter. Anchorage (near Palin's hometown) is 550 miles away.

No Alaskan governor has ever visited Little Diomede, though indicted U.S. Senator Ted Stevens has made the trip. The town's residents barely knew who Palin was, and one of them didn't know she was the VP nominee.

It's going to be fun watching McCain-land spin this one, and it's going to be even more fun watching Tina Fey parody it.

How much experience does she have with her other international neighbor - the ones whose western residents also speak English?

Is it true that Little Diomede is the only place in Alaska you can see Russia from? In the 60s the grid coordinates of Alaskan peaks were extreme US state secrets, as they would have allowed the Soviets to tie their surveying grid to the US one by triangulation from their own peaks. I doubt if Palin has been up those mountains either, but did she ever claim to have personally seen Russia? I am sure most Alaskans are more aware of Russia, by its nearness, than contiguous-staters are. In Rochester, NY, I have met people who didn't know the US has a border with Mexico, but such people would be harder to find in Texas -- even if they haven't gone and looked.
Palin is horrible enough taken straight. It should not be necessary to distort her remarks to attack her.

A little weird to see CNN doing a Stewart-esque piece (although if they did it, it'd have been much funnier to be sure).

All the rhetorical hoohah and fairness whimpering needs to just stop. She's a fascist and a delusional who needs to be shut down. She has no business being in American politics and is uttelry unqualified. EVERYTHING is fair game because her people set the rules and said so.

Cry me a river for Caribou Barbie. She needs a slap in the ass and to be sent home. And yeah, every stoopid damned thing that spills from her mouth needs to be excoriated, viciously if need be.

You don't play nice with people who want your existence snuffed out.

Butchering King Crab in the Aleutians

After my junior year at MIT I drove from Boston to Anchorage with two college friends from Alaska. I ended up in Cold Bay in the Aleutians, where I lived and worked (processing king crab) on a gigantic old dock built during World War II.

Although it’s impossible to see Russia from Cold Bay, I can’t get rid of a disturbing mental image of Sarah Palin “sitting on the dock of the bay” and staring into the distant mists trying to divine the intentions of Putin.

Yes, everyone says silly things from time to time, so we shouldn’t make too much of her initial silly comment about Russia. And she could have ended it there if she had simply acknowledged her gaffe and laughed along with her detractors.

But — in an unbelievable exercise in bad judgment and verbal gibberish — she dug a much deeper hole during her interview with Katie Couric. Normally reasonably articulate, Palin came across as George W. Bush in drag. Now that’s another disturbing mental image to deal with!

P.S. When I sat on that dock in the Aleutians many summers ago and looked up at the moon, I never once thought of myself as an expert in green cheese.

We've all known people like her in our lives. She is Bush's TWIN. She's one more of those people for whom lying is easier than breathing. They have no conscience, no sense of shame. They lie when there's no need of lying because lying comes more naturally to them than the truth. When caught in a lie, even if they confess it's a lie, they just keep repeating it. They think their friends, family, and acquaintances are dumb as posts and they feel superior for having fooled as many as they can. It's just amazing that nearly half the voters in this country are still going to vote for her and her sugar daddy McSame. They never learn. McCain's idea of "Change" is one phony, lying, thieving, war mongering, torturing administration for another just like it.
