Ah, the irony. Wired's Noah Schactman notes:

After years on patrol overseas, 12% of combat troops in Iraq and 17% of those in Afghanistan are taking prescription antidepressants or sleeping pills to help them cope, Time magazine reports in a cover story on "America's Medicated Army."

Drugs have always played a role in warfare, but anti-depressants are a new thing, as Scachtman highlights from the Time article:

"In the Persian Gulf War, we didn't have these medications, so our basic philosophy was 'three hots and a cot'" -- giving stressed troops a little rest and relaxation to see if they improved. "If they didn't get better right away, they'd need to head to the rear and probably out of theater." But in his most recent stint in Baghdad in 2006, he treated a soldier who guarded Iraqi detainees. "He was distraught while he was having high-level interactions with detainees, having emotional confrontations with them -- and carrying weapons," [Colonel Joseph] Horam says. "But he was part of a highly trained team, and we didn't want to lose him. So we put him on an SSRI [selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, like Prozac and Zoloft], and within a week, he was a new person, and we got him back to full duty."

There are wonderful drugs out there that can take us to new understandings of reality ... and horrible realities that can only be dealt with by taking massive drugs. Check out Penny Coleman's AlterNet article on this subject, "Pentagon, Big Pharma: Drug Troops to Numb Them to Horrors of War."

Big Pharma or Big Brother when you are killing people and witnessing the most egregious events you..

...you would never hope to see you WANT to get high. Vietnam, heroin. So many came back as hardcore addicts it took the lucky ones years to get clean, many never did and are dead. People think these kids just want to murder people, they are unaware and ill prepared for the most fucked up thing a human being is forced to do.
Blame it Big Pharma if you like, if it makes you think ion some way you're right, this is the fault of the Murderers and liars in the Executive Branch...
If they want to be numb leave them the fuck alone and allow them a bit of an escape.

Yet another big business that can now profit from the war

Is anyone really surprised that big pharma would find a way to grab their cash based on "The shock doctrine" (read Naomi Kleins book of the same title)
It's more insidious than giving the WW2 troops free cigarettes to get them hooked as customers for life.
Who in their right mind wouldn't want to continuously escape reality once this sham of a war is over. Get them dependent on the shit over there, so when, and IF, they ever come home, they'll be hooked for life.
Don't feel happy?
Just pop a pill and move along.
Your republican government at work.

come on. you know what this is about.

keeping them fighting.
making a profit.
keeping them popping pills without assistance or proper Command supports.
keeping them edgy until they die.

who wants to give them BENEFITS? easier if they just commit suicide when they get home, right?

worked for the Nazis, until it *didn't*...

Just like any other drug... its like running on a conveyer belt... & when you get to the end?

you land on your face.

Let's be honest, they only care as long as you're on the conveyer belt in the War Theater.

... either you die THERE
or die AT HOME...

survival is an expense to be managed by the Pentagon.
can't have that. its fiscally irresponsible, right?

bastards.

meanwhile, the Globe suffers from a lack of pain-management drugs... so the US Military is supporting BigPharma's suppression of Afghanistan's millennia-old opium & THC agriculture.

Why? because Americans wanna get high?

meanwhile the rest of the Globe can just suck on expired BigPharma tax credits throw-aways or dubiously experimental drugs.

Has America, GONE POSTAL???

What matters of conscience, caused postal workers to seek out prozac??? How many people in prison/ incarserated, are on prescription mind altering substances??? How many guards/ prison workers??? Politicians??? It seems to me that most Americans are trying their best to cope with, or escape reality!!! The war against drugs, is just a monopoly, monopolizing, choice and freedom!!! Does America need to deaden it's conscience, in order to justify, or cope with they're UNCONSCIENCEABLE preoccupation with money and power, at any cost, of humanity, the enviroment, or the constitution!!! In todays America, it's legal to push someone over the edge, just don't dare be the one being pushed!!! I need drugs, to cope with societies hiprocacy, and perseuction, against those who trust in God's natural substances!!! Society, needs drugs, to deaden they're conscience's, to cope with they're own hyprocracy, and persecution of others, to get a pay check!!! The Hippies, and the Christians, have the same philosophy: "Everybody must get stoned", but the Christians use real rocks!!!
