From this week's NORML <a href="http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3442">weekly media advisory</a>:

Oakland voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved the nation’s first ever business tax on retail marijuana sales.

According to preliminary election results, approximately 80 percent of Oakland voters approved the new tax (which appeared on the ballot as Measure F), which imposes an additional tax for “cannabis businesses” of $18 for every $1,000 of gross receipts beginning January 1, 2010.

Presently, Oakland’s medical cannabis dispensaries are taxed at the same rate as other retail sales businesses ($60 per year for the $50,000 of gross receipts, plus $1.20 for each additional $100,000).

Four dispensaries are licensed by the Oakland City Council to sell and dispense medical marijuana.

According to a financial analysis by the Oakland City Auditor, Oakland’s new cannabis business tax will generate an estimated $300,000 in additional annual tax revenue.

Representatives from the Oakland City Council, the California Nurses Association, and the dispensary community publicly advocated for the new tax, which had no formal opposition.

“The passage of this first-in-the-nation tax further legitimizes cannabis-based enterprises in Oakland and elsewhere,” NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre said. “These outlets are contributing to the health and welfare of their local communities, both socially and now economically. At a time when many municipalities  are strapped for tax revenues and cutting public services it is likely that public officials in other cities will begin considering similar proposals.”

Is the Times really this hard up for story ideas that they need multiple columnists writing about their adventures getting pot?

Let's hope the good news spreads throughout our economically ravaged state. Taxes on that very, VERY big business would SOLVE our problems. Maybe, we could even have a return to such exotic services such as school bus transportation, music education or even, gosh, teacher's aides! It'll be a happy day when we no longer have to deal with dingdong Arnold, who would gladly sell any of our state's precious resources to fund his ever-increasing personal security budget. Or gee, Arnold, why not give away our incomparable coastline to your old friends, hey maybe you could round up a few dollars before you destroy our resources and livihoods. Kudos to Oakland!

YO--DEVAL!!

WHAT DO WE WANT? THE POT TAX! WHEN DO WE WANT IT? NOW!!

It's prime time, too. Massachusetts decriminalized last year, and only a few cities and towns passed law that overrides the statute. It's time to light up for our schools, for parks and recreation and, last but not least--library science!

Is it worthy to add tax for this kind of company?? Well if the purpose of this is for medicine, there must still be a restriction in using this kind of drug. Easy come, easy go – there's another one, uncomplicated terms, an installment plan if desired, and no fax and direct deposit capabilities with the lender. It's really easy to get easy cash loans if you need quick cash because of unexpected expenses.

Had this happened in the previous administration, the Oakland city council might had been hauled to court by the Fed, along with issuing other threats.

It's our #1 cash crop. Take gains that drug dealers and corrupt officials make and use it for much-needed state revenue.

But what's needed is to legalize growing the kind herb in home gardens just like growing tomatoes is legal.

We know it's coming, let's not get so generous right out of the gate, remember government hasn't been exactly cooperative on this subject, in fact they opposed it. Tax is tax, just because we voted to tell the government they're wrong on every aspect of the spew they regurgitate upon us, doesn't mean we need volunteer more than the fair share of the "legal tax", because before we know it, they'll be tacking on all sorts of stuff, remember, they're desperate for cash.
