Many Minority Women Don't Vote, Here's How to Help

Posted by Liza Sabater, Culture Kitchen at 3:15 AM on September 16, 2008.

69% of Latinas do not vote. 70% African American and Asian American registered voting women also abstain from voting.

69% of Latinas do not vote. Even though we have the highest pregnancy rates and the fastest growing incidences of AIDS in the United States. 70% African American and Asian American registered voting women also abstain from voting.

Pass on this video clip to every single, Black, Latian, Asian, Native US American woman you know and ask them to pass it on to their family friends.

Faced with the prospect of a McCain presidency that would squash any hope of Universal Health Care and would put on the bench Supreme Court Justices that would bring back reproductive slavery, it is absolutely necessary that each and every minority woman and man go out and vote.

From the EngageHer blog :

With over 30+ million minority women in the U.S. who are eligible to vote, we can make a big and profound impact on our November elections. More importantly when you multiply our influence on our families, communities and social networks, to go out and vote, we have a huge part to play in choosing our next President. Even more important is all the excitement and feedback we’re getting from women regardless of their racial or ethnic background who want to join us. They’re saying that our key messages and focus on the issues we universally care about is what we all should focus on when we vote. Together, we will pick the next President of the United States.

Our key messages:

1. Focus on the issues: Education, Health, Economy, Environment, Social Justice

2. Demand accountability from the elected legislators for the past 8 years and moving forward

3. You can Vote for just the President, member of Congress and Senate and skip the rest of the ballot

4. Use the absentee ballot so you don’t have to worry about childcare, getting to the polls, etc.

Our documentary tells the stories of minority women and the reasons why they don’t vote.

This is a video that should be required viewing for all canvassers for the Obama campaign. And required reading? I have two articles : Lost in Hillaryland and What I learned in Philly's 14th Ward about language, class and the interfaces of political power.

Whenever there's an article concerning people of color, the troglodytes come out in full force? Now eher we have a serious issue about voter participation and guess who shows up first? Mr. Neanderthal himself--Iceman--and his racist comments. It's not a stretch that "Ice"dude is some lame-brain white guy who could care less if this country suffers under four more years of Bush II, better known as McCain/Palin.

Black women are going to vote in DROVES, never fear. But I plan to do even more to insure this happens.

What I always find fascinating, and proves the point that most white people aren't as smart as they'd like for the rest of us to believe, is that illegal immigration was NEVER an issue until the war started going bad and the economy started showing signs of weakening. Many illegal immigrants have been here for quite some time, often hired by big firms as janitors, housekeepers and the like. You know, jobs that white folks are just TOO PROUD to sully their hands with. These people have been picking the fruits and veggies losers like Iceman probably stick into his big, fat mouth everyday and never once did he say "I can't eat this 'cause good ol' Americans didn't pick it."

Yes, I agree like many saner individuals that our borders need to be secure. However, my ire is directed at the source of the problem--MEXICO. A country unwilling to take care of its own people and one that is corrupt to the core. The drug lords pretty much have full run of the place--just last week 24 people were found dead outside one of the near-border towns. I'd rather take Mexico to task and MAKE them get their shit together first. And I am not willing to march like a good little Nazi and buy the propaganda.

Great job. The low voter turnout is the main reason why Bush was elected. If all minorities would vote then the Dems would win in a landslide. If there is hope... it lies in the proles.

Your work sounds good and congratulations but WHY IS THE BLOODY HELL ARE THE WARS NOT ON YOUR LIST OF ISSUES?

I am sick beyond belief that BOTH SIDES have managed to dissapear TWO WARS from public view. THIS IS MADNESS.

Do people not care? I am a progressive a liberal and proud of it. WE OPPOSE ILLEGAL WARS STARTED WITHOUT CAUSE.

We are occupying Iraq right now, simply because we can. It is wrong. It will evil. It is hurting us and will hurt us more.
