Whatever you're guessing, you should probably be guessing higher.

Editor's note: We had an impromptu guess-a-thon here in the AlterNet office and no one was even close. Laura Bush had the good sense to rock duds only costing somewhere between $3,425 to $4,325 ... but Cindy ... well it's just ridiculous.

Vanity Fair does the numbers on the "banana look" so you don't have to :

Cindy McCain

Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000

Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500

Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000

Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000

Shoes, designer unknown: $600

Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

Christ. Each individual earring alone costs more than my (one) house! At least, that's how much my house USED to be worth. Not as much as that anymore, I'm afraid.

...what probably amounts to hundreds of thousands in cosmetic surgery and I'll bet she spent a couple hundred to get her hair did.

Not to mention hair and makeup. I'm sure it takes a whole team to put that sack of bones together! Since I rarely cut my hair and can't afford makeup I can't even imagine what those costs are...5k?

Can anyone say, "Tammy Faye Baker" or "Gross, dated porn"?

Just what the materialist christian right needs to gain confidence in their blind vote is a couple hundred thousand dollars in ugly stupid-looking clothing. Cindy's look is taken directly from the same mold as Fox News and I've come to believe that because hypocritical xtians don't allow themselves to visit flagrant porn or, "god forbid" fantasize, they instead rely on the old dated prime-time material oozing from the four corners of the msm so that they don't have to admit they indulge in Gross, dated porn... (hmmhmm, their preferred porn is adorned with really obnoxious material blessings from god)

Cindy McCain's Gold Outfit

First off, the outfit that Ms McCain wore was really ugly. To find out that it probably cost over $300,000 should help everyone to now understand why her husband believes that anyone earning under $5 million is middle class!!! Her garish display shows me how really out of touch McCain and company are with most of the people in this nation. Granted she has her own fortune that permits her to spend this much, but she should really try to relate to the rest of us! Heaven help us all if this woman becomes the First Lady of the land!

more people will see it. It's the kind of vapid "news" that the dummies who watch The View, and E!, etc. might be interested in. Not truly relevant, but it can't hurt the Democrats if the world knows how the other half, where the McCain's live, lives.

So Michelle Obama paid $7.95 at walmart for her outfit..class always shows.

BTW, ever price out one of those fine liberal Hollywood types dresses and jewelry. A bit more than McCains for sure!

Or enough to cover the rent of 44 low income tenants paying an average of $565/month, which is what my monthly rent is.

How can we prevail as a race
Posted by: bryangalt on Sep 5, 2008 4:27 AM

How can humans prevail on this little ocean in space when the country that should be leading the world through our exponentially expanding environmental crisis, leading the world through our self-inflicted economic crisis and teaching our people how to become the better people for tomorrow WHEN ANYONE WEARS $300,000 worth of shit--and the party doesn't skip a beat.

Thanks to US (that's You and I or the United States, whichever makes you feel more like a patriotic ass), we are failing our species and tens of thousands of others because of our inability to get a grip on our intense desire to collect stuff, placing the collection of shit as a higher priority than having food on the table, a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs.

On Sunday, my nephew and one of his friends said that if Obama got elected, we would become a oppressive, fascist state. Then they repeated the flag BS "He would lose the war to win the election."

I can tell you they were damn lucky I didn't hear that come out of their mouths directly. They were saved by their grandma (my mom). She said she almost dropped her tea that these two (high school grads and one half way through college) would be so blind that they would say something that is an absolute lie and spread around with the conviction of a religious zealot.

(Plus, I was in the next room and she was scared I would take their blind stupidity the wrong way, thus leading to some direly needed "re-education"--just kidding. I let them out of the leg irons earlier today, which seemed smarter since formally educating them has only made them more sincere in repeating their stupidity).

The moral of this story? A $300,000 outfit on the Republican Candidate's wife should be something that caused an uproar of youtube proportions. Who is elitist? Who are the McCain's going to serve?

It's too bad that no matter how long I held my nephews eye's open and his partner's feet to the paddle (game boy), they couldn't see what I was talking about. This is the generation on the cusp of taking over political America.

We are in big trouble...

... I must admit. It's infuriating to watch the RNC and hear John McCain talk about cutting wastefull spending, then see Cindy caravaning in a $300,000 dress. It's just Unbelievable... and by Unbelievable I mean UN-Believable. God help us all

but not so ugly, after all. what i noticed was the long sleeves, and i wondered where the cast was that she has been wearing ever since that "handshaking incident." you could see it earlier in the day when she was walking around on the stage. why can't we get some straight information about this? you and i both know that wasn't what happened; we just can't get anyone to tell us what really did. somewhere there is someone who knows the truth and i want to hear from that person!

The perfect modern candidate's wife: able to buy the influence needed to get into any house she likes, including the White House.
