In a short, to-the-point news conference this morning, White House press secretary Scott McClellan announced his resignation. After giving the usual thanks and bons mots about looking forward to spending more time with his family, Bush responded thusly:

I, first of all, I thank Scott for his service to our country. I don't know whether or not the press corps realizes this, but his is a challenging assignment dealing with you all on a regular basis. And I thought he handled his assignment with class, integrity. He really represents, you know, the best of his family, our state and our country.

It's going to be hard to replace Scott. But nevertheless, he's made the decision, and I accept it.

One of these days, he and I are going to be rocking in chairs in Texas talking about the good old days of his time as the press secretary. And I can assure you, I will feel the same way then that I feel now, that I can say to Scott, job well done.

What's with Bush and rocking chairs? First it was rocking with Frist on his front porch, now it's more of the same in Texas with Scottie.

ITV News is reporting the more earth-shattering news that Karl Rove has resigned as deputy chief of staff as well. There will be much more on this to come later today.

If so...this could be the start of a red letter day! Now, we need a handful more, oh...say perhaps BUSH, CHENEY, RUMSFELD to start, but hey, why look a gift horse in the mouth?

Rearranging the deck chairs

McClellan? True to form, Bush dumps the only halfway competent member of his senior staff. Until they get rid of Rumsfeld, Rice and other architects of catastrophic policies, it's nothing but rearranging the deck chairs.

I guess little old Scotty got a little tired of not being able to sleep at night. The flat out lies that came out of this individuals mouth were only slightly less prolific than another well known figure, known as the president.

Beware if Torie Clarke takes Scott McClellan's place. She was the former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs when we went into Iraq. This administration would want her as W.H. Press Secretary if they decide to bomb Iran.

This is a chair rearrangement as another blogger posted today. No matter what happens on the surface you have an evil Shadow Gov't that will just keep pushing up new infections disguised as Cabinet members. This is all highly strategic and of course isn't the first time in this Admin. Remember Tenet-Powell etc etc. leaving quite unceremoniously, but certainly not ignominiously. They figure if you keep turnover fast and high then no one's ever in the spotlight for anything and there is no accountability, past-present-future. It's highly calculated fascism, and you should say the word over and over so it becomes habit. Be vigilant because these folks are really steadfast; they're worse than the football frat at Colgate U., and believe me, they were truly a disturbing culture.

I'm picturing 440-volt electric chairs, rockin' across the porch like a Maytag with an unbalanced load.
