Kennedy, Michelle, and Two Little Obamas Make Dems' First Night a Win

Posted by Blue Texan, Firedoglake at 10:11 AM on August 26, 2008.

Some people are worried that the Dems didn't go after McCain last night ... be patient, last night wasn't the night to attack.

I'm a little puzzled by some of the hand-wringing about the tone of the convention last night. I've argued that the Democrats need to attack this week, but last night wasn't the time to do it.

Ted Kennedy's seriously ill, and you don't trot him out on that podium to hit McSame with gotchas and zingers. You don't ask Michelle Obama, who right-wing assholes are still caricaturing as an angry America hater, to use her speech to deliver political attacks.

My favorite moment of the night was the interplay between Obama and his adorable little girls. You can't build up to that moment with a night of "John McSame suxxxxx!!1!!11!!"

Now it's arguable that Pelosi's "and John McCain is wrong" refrain wasn't forceful enough, and there's been a mixed reaction to Claire McCaskill's speech, who also got some nice partisan digs in. But the cable news networks only aired a handful of other speeches, including Craig Robinson and Caroline Kennedy, and none of them were naturals to really go after the GOP and McSame.

So how do I know the Democrats won the night? Look at the lineup that the GOP is trotting out their first night:

  • U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (Conn.)
  • Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (Calif.)
  • Vice President Richard B. Cheney
  • First Lady Laura Bush
  • President George W. Bush

I rest my case.

The 70% of Americans who hate George W. Bush and Dick Cheney will tune in and be reminded that John McSame is in the same noxious party as these two losers. And the more Bush and Cheney embrace McSame, the worse a night it will be for him. They're pretty much screwed.

Democrats 1, Goopers 0.

(PS.

Having said all that, I hope HRC delivers a monumental smackdown on McSame tonight.)

I couldn't agree more

I actually watched convention coverage on CNN, and I was reminded of why my "no national news on TV" policy is a good one.
The people I wanted to smack were Anderson Cooper and Co., who never stopped harping on "where are the attacks, this is boring". I kept thinking, this isn't a football game, you morons, the future of our country is at stake here.

What is wrong with these people, is this what actually passes for "journalism" on national TV these days? It made me appreciate AlterNet even more than usual.

Both Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama were moving and inspirational. And yes, I'm looking forward to seeing the Bushies ripped to shreds by whoever they pick for that task. Biden for certain, I would think, and I'm hoping Bill Clinton, who obviously has a lot of pent-up venom just looking for an outlet.

The Democrats are far from perfect, but here and now in 2008, they are our last best hope for salvaging what's left of our democracy. Yay team.

I was able to watch last night IN TOTAL AND UNINTERRUPTED on C-Span. CNN was a joke, with the commercials and constant drivel during the early speeches.
I have no doubt the attacks will be forthcoming. Tonight when Hillary speaks, (in view of her comment after mcinsane's new ad broke) I believe she will pull out the stops and be the first to go for mcinsane's gullet.

I posted above about CSPAN without first reading the rest of your comments!

Just goes to show "great minds think alike!" ;-)

.... and thanks to everyone who reminded me that a "political commentator-free zone" still exists, on TV. :)
