Bush Administration Putting Immunity For Blackwater Over The Lives Of Our Troops

Posted by Blue Texan, Firedoglake at 11:17 AM on August 9, 2008.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

While McSame runs around accusing Obama of wanting to "forfeit" Iraq, the Bushies are finalizing the negotiations for forfeiting Iraq by 2011. But the negotiations have hit a snag.

The sticking point?

The U.S. officials said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke with al-Maliki on Wednesday to try to resolve the issue of legal immunity for U.S. contractors working in Iraq.

The officials described the phone call as tense.

Under a provision put into place in the early days of the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq, security contractors have had immunity from Iraqi law.

The Iraqi government has criticized the blanket immunity because of incidents such as the fatal shootings of 17 people in Baghdad's Nusoor Square on September 16. Iraqi officials say Blackwater Worldwide contractors killed the 17.

Selling out the Constitution to give telecoms immunity is bad enough. Selling out the troops to give Blackwater immunity is a whole new level of sickening.

Digg!

Difficult Comparison...

"Selling out the Constitution" vs. "Selling out the troops"...

Well... I'm going to argue that the first one is the worse of the two. Here's why:

The Constitution is the tool we were given to help ensure just and representative governance. If the tool is kept in good condition, it can be used to right all sorts of wrongs. It can even correct errors of the latter kind, though the soldiers that are killed are certainly unreplaceable...

If we allow the Constitution to be sufficiently degraded... as we have and as we continue to do... we're cooked. The Constitution can save our soldiers. But our soldiers are not very likely to rescue our Constitution. (As I understand it, that sort of task is actually expressly forbidden. The military is strictly forbidden to be political.) That is, in fact, our job, as citizens. We're falling down on our responsibilities. Our soldiers are doing what they are asked to do... what they are told to do. It is our responsibility to utilize them wisely.

There is but one Constitution. We have but one continuous opportunity to keep it intact. Republicans and other assholes will threaten the Constitution for a long time... possibly forever. Vigilance is what is required of us.

"The troops"... the ones we haven't wasted already... are counting on us.

a certain majority of politicians, and the people who voted for them, allowed retroactive immunity to be legalised to protect corporate criminals in America.

Now little old Iraq, the country full of illiterate, uneducated, muslim 9/11 terrorist monsters(bitter sarcasm), if you listen to those same politicians mentioned above, have managed to mire the once great nation of the US into not getting it's criminal immunity way in their country.

So can the sane people tell me which one of those two countries is filled with the MORONS and which one is filled with people of integrity.

This is almost as oxymoronic as the President of the US lecturing the Chinese on Human Rights while he has authorized and allows his government employees to use the old Chinese tried and true waterboarding torture technique.

I know all US citizens are not this way, but what a NATION OF FOOLS!

Revoke 'Contracts' & Land leases for all Basic needs

The Corps have not only taken over the Free Market they have captured our Fundemental needs- as Humans and as a Nation.
It's time to revoke these contracts.
The use of Private Corps for our national security, is about as sound as hiring AQ to protect US.What will stop these Corps from changing sides if the bidder is higher from enemeies of the US? When your Corp goal is Profits- how is Treason determined? does the concept even exist in your business model or mission statement?
this also goes for the Oil Industry, who our Gov't has granted our lands to produce their product without any requirement to make this nationally owne dcommodity available to US first at the lowest possible price. the Lie of Ommission when it come to the facts about what 'off Shore Drilling ' will do for US- Yes we Own the land , put the rights have been sold through a Lease.
WE have also had our Range land sold (our eco- system) to Agri business who are unable to safely manage their stock for food production.consider how much beef has been contaminated by mass production processes. How many millions pound of beef are disgarded due to expiration. How many indiginous animals have been displaced or killed to make way for this Over production, Poor management and Profiteering.
Basic Human needs and National need should not be allowed to be auctioned off.the federal Gov't was formed to assure the basic need of it's citizens and the Nations welfare. to continue to hand these innate responsiblities off to Profit margin focused eneities is not only a derelcition of duty, but also a High crime, they took an Oath to Protect & Defend the US- citizens and constitution. No corporation has ever taken such an Oath to US, therefore has no requirement to do so.
there is no 'America Inc', Just "Inc"

Way to stand for what's right. "Privatization" has become the whole new scheme for looters to suck our republic dry to its last day, above and beyond our own laws as well. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

Keep up the good work. This is the kind of thing the People — all of us — should forever be on top of.

PS.

Whatever happen to this free, democratic Iraq idea?

And how exactly would a free, independent, "democratic" Iraq profit from granting "Blackwater" free reign to gun down its own citizens?

Sure, that sounds just like freedom and independence to me.

What war?

Everyone...especially Politicians looking for an angle, keep talking about how to end the Iraq war.

I say, "What war?"

Sure...we "liberated" them from Saddam. That took all of a week, ending the war when Iraq was free.

Or is it?

If we freed them and they have a government and want us to leave, all of that adds up to there no longer being a war and us wearing out our "welcome".

We are there either to occupy a conquered nation AFTER the war or we are there to train their troops to maintain order AFTER the war. But there is NO WAR any longer, just a police action.

Now if they push us to leave and we refuse, then we would be in a war where we, the aggressors are intent on seizing a sovereign nation for our own greedy purposes.

Perhaps the Iraqis should charge the Blackwater people as terrorists and take them to the World Court. Perhaps the Iraqis should also charge those who hired them.

DO YOU KNOW WHO ELSE SOLD OUT OUR CONSTITUTION? THAT LIAR OBAMA. THAT LYING BASTARD SAID HE WOULD FILLIBUSTER THE BILL. HE VOTED YES TO GIVING IMMUNITY TO THE TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES WHICH ALLOWED THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION TO TOSS OUR 4TH AMENDMENT INTO THE TRASH.
I WONDER HOW MUCH CAREER ENDING DIRT THIS GOVERNMENT OF OURS HAS ON MEMBERS OF CONGRESS GATHERED FROM READING OUR E-MAILS AND BUGGING OUR PHONE CALLS. YOU CAN FIGURE ANY DEMOCRAT WHO VOTED YES TO THIS BILL HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE.
HILLARY VOTED AGAINST IT. SHE HAS NO SKELETONS IN HER CLOSET AFTER 8 YEARS OF INVESTIGATIONS.
I WILL VOTE FOR THE ONLY CANDIDATE FOR REAL CHANGE. HILLARY CLINTON'S NAME WILL BE ON MY BALLOT.
