I suppose they should formalize it.

I suppose they should formalize it yet.

Bayh, who has spoken with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about his initiative, said he is trying to create a faction of moderate Senators who will gather on a weekly basis ahead of the usual Tuesday Democratic Caucus meetings.

Additionally, Bayh envisions inviting outside speakers to address the group, which would also work in concert with third parties that have similar viewpoints, like the Third Way, a nonpartisan progressive think tank.

A Reid spokesman said the Majority Leader was similarly upbeat about the idea.

"Nearly a decade of Republican fiscal irresponsibility has contributed to our current economic crisis," Reid spokesman Jim Manley said in an e-mail statement. "That is why Sen. Reid welcomes Sen. Bayh's decision to form this group. For we know that Sen. Bayh, like all Democrats, is committed to restoring our nation's fiscal and economic health."

Over the past three weeks, Bayh and his staff have reached out to Senators to judge the appetite for such a group.

"I've had some expressions of interest," Bayh said. "I'm going to continue to meet and talk to my colleagues."

Likely targets for Bayh would include moderate Democrats like Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Blanche Lincoln (Ark.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Jim Webb (Va.), and Sen.-elect Mark Warner (Va.).

You can read more on Third Way here. Steven Benen is not encouraged, but I have a somewhat different attitude.  This shows that the 60 vote threshold argument was nonsense, power is concentrated in the hands of conservative Democrats and a few Republicans, and that's how these guys wanted it.

Digg!

What happened to the DLC? Jumping Ship???

Are 'Reagan Democrats' jumping ship from the Clintons lil' group of co conspriators?
Bayh is a DLC'er, sounds like he's trying to rid himself of the affiliation. could it be because the DLC was nothing more than th eBlue arm of the Corporationists. Have they realized the prosecutorial eye is turn towards their 'Third Way' doctrine too.
Hillary has NEVER been a Democrat, reason she came up with that oxymoronic slogan 'Reagan Democrat' - No such beast existed in the '80's..Those were Repugs who escaped the 'Moral Majoritys' Inquistion by hiding in the Morally degenerate Democratic party. Ya know we'll all sinners bound for Hell anyway. So the DLC decided to work the other side of the street fro their corp masters.
so are these Dems hoping to distance themselves for the revelation Hillary exposed with her by the Book Neo Con Campaign tactics and platform.
Heres a little hint for those 'Blue Dogs', Democrats Always Support Labor (citizens), In turn Labor will support Industry.don't tell me the UAW has been sucking down the Big 3, when over the last 3 decades it has ONLY been the UAW who have pulled the Coprs asses out fo the fire. Contractual concession in '05, '07 and last month. How many loses have the investors under their belt in the same time frame? How much less have the CEO's & other top brass made in the same time period?
The reason Labor protects Industry IS BECAUSE IT'S OUR LIVLIHOOD!! Those our OUR companies, WE are the faces of Those Logos.Better the companies does better the worker does. Well at least that used to be the way things worked. Before the Democratic party was infiltrated by so called 'New Dems' aka the DLC.
Granted there are Dems who have pretended to be labor supporters but were playing pocket pull with the Corps before the Clintons DLC 'Third Way'. But then these 'Reagan Democrats' used our party to get in the WH to brazenly, unabashedly Screw Us! the Clintons and the DLC betrayed US all. they not only continued policies which perpetuated union busting, but created a trade policy to put the final stake in. They not only undermined that mainstay of the Dem platform, they conceeded on our Social issues of Equal rights and kicked the can forward on international concerns .
So watching these DLC'ers think they can slither away from this affilation, they are sorely mistaken.Gore/Lieberman, Kerry/Edwards,and Hillary, all losers because they reeked of Corporatism. Feinstien & Schummer have a number of votes which deserve a closer look by the Dem Base. Lieberman has already signed his resignation papers. Bills in a political shit hole again.
so Call it whatever you want Bayh, it will still reek of BS to any Dem who's pissed at the Betrayal of a good number of 'Reagan Democrats' or 'blue dogs' who used to call themselves the DLC.
So either Conform to the Basic Democratic platform or admit you are a Republican. Considering the Republican Name is in the Crapper, adjusting your ideology is a better prosepect for a Political future.
Every 'Reagan Democrat', 'blue Dog' DLC'er has a scarlet letter on their foreheads. Real Dems won't forget (or forgive) those who masqueraded in Our color, but worked for the other sided. 30 yrs of Complicity is not easily set aside, You did not just Fail US, you betrayed US! BAD BAD BLUE DOGS!!!

Who the hell wants a "committee" made up of "moderate" Democrats? We need thinkers and activists.

Blue Dogs are not MODERATES!!!!!!!!!! THey are RIGHTWINGNUTS!!!They are pro-war, pro-life, pro-BUSH policies and have always been. THey voted us in the Patriot, Military Commissions, enhanced FISA bills. Quit trying to dupe us, they are HORRIBLE! I'd rather have a Republican than a Blue Dog, at least then we know what we'd get.

WTF is a "moderate Democrat"?

Is that a Democrat at the extreme right end of the party's political spectrum? Or is it someone somewhere more or less in the middle between Feingold and Reid, perhaps?

What does it mean to support Habeus Corpus rights "in moderation"? What does it mean to support our Constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties "in moderation"?

Is that what we mean by "moderate"? Then I want nothing to do with them. And if that means that the guys at the right end are opposed to such liberties, then I look forward to the day when they are no longer invited to the same table.

how about a deadhead caucus?

now that the recount favors Franken over Coleman it gives us 2 deadhead senators, Leahy and Franken, there maypossibly be one or two closet deadheads there already, so they could form their own progressive caucus. I remember rumors that Al gore was a closet deadhead, and Bradley was prioudly open- I saw him at many concerts; so who else is hiding there? Come out, come out whoever you are and let'sdecriminalize grass.

For Republicans with "D" behind their names on the roster of our Congress. DLC or Blue Dog is just code for Closeted Republican.

Byah is not and never was anything but a corporate sponsoring leach sucking the blood of the People. I hope that the People of Indiana will soon see him as he promotes the hoax "war on terror" and for all of the Bush war efforts, as the "Blue Dogs" have always supported funding the needless wars based completely on lies and manipulations since and including 9-11.

I recall a party the telecom leeches threw for the already existing Blue Dogs for voting for telecom immunity. Whenever a democrat goes "conservative" its a rationalization for taking gifts from major corporate entities. That's all.

blue dog conservatives

Blue dog conservative democrats scheme to expand their relationship with republican views on social and other issues important to mainstream America.Fighting this is an important step in establishing redefining our country into a more citizen friendly and socially responsible society.

The economy is in shambles, due largely to the very policies projected by these pseudo-democrats and their republican cohorts in government.Worker rights must be expanded along with dramatic increases in social spending to alleviate the poverty and financial instability felt by the majority of Americans.A single payer health care plan is being not just asked for but demanded by the citizens of this country.

We deserve so much better than the corporate, profit driven system we now endure. Those opposed to such a plan squawk about the 'socialist agenda',the expansion of government deciding what option are available.

I would take my chances with single payer any day over our current system where the insurance companies decide if you get the care which may save your life or they make ever larger profits.
Profits more often than not wins over your life.
If we ever hope to progress to a more equitable society, these 'blue dog republic-rats',with all the neoconservative destruction policies must be stopped in their tracks.
