Press Frustration With McCain Bubbles Over: 'Has Your Bus Become the No Talk Express?'

Posted by Sam Stein, Huffington Post at 11:51 AM on September 23, 2008.

"Relations between John McCain and the press corps that was once described as his 'base' have fully deteriorated."

Relations between John McCain and the press corps that was once described as his "base" have fully deteriorated. After an appearance in Strongsville, Ohio, on Tuesday, the Senator blissfully ignored questions about the bailout plan from nearby reporters, prompting one journalist to scream out: "Has your bus become the No Talk Express?"

McCain offered a smirk at the line but kept on walking. "Ok, pool, back to the vans!" said an aide. "That was fun."

The outburst came as the press pool accompanying vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin nearly revolted on Tuesday, after the campaign banned reporters from covering her first meetings with world leaders, in favor of photographers and a singular television news crew.

Reporters have also sharply criticized the GOP ticket for avoiding questions from the Fourth Estate. It's been 40 days since the Senator has taken a question from a national reporter, though word leaked out today that McCain is planning his first press conference since August 13. Gov. Sarah Palin, meanwhile, has yet to host a press availability.

"The woman seeking to be to a heartbeat away from the presidency without ever holding a press conference remains on the same relatively unaccountable path," ABC's Jake Tapper wrote on his blog. "McCain-Palin campaign officials apparently feel the American people should trust her with the button and the world's financial markets without ever taking questions from reporters."

The McCain campaign has also complained bitterly about a purported double standard in the coverage of Obama. On Monday, campaign strategist Steve Schmidt chastised the New York Times as a non-journalistic institution for writing on the lobbying work campaign manager Rick Davis did on behalf of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Later that day, spokesman Brian Rogers accused Politico reporter Ben Smith of being "in the tank" for Obama, simply because Smith asked the campaign to verify claims it was making about the Illinois Democrat's character and biography.

All the news shows should just boycott McCain.

They should stop inviting ALL McCain supporters and spend their whole shows talking about "What's McCain hiding anyway?" And just exactly how, when and where did he learn how to "win wars" and just what was he thinking after he dropped those bombs on the USS Forrestal all those years ago and just what "special favors" did he get from the Viet Cong and what exactly did he DO for them. And how much does he REALLY HATE AMERICA for leaving him there for 5 long years. Is that where all that anger comes from. And if he gets elected, just how long will it be before he starts a NUCLEAR WAR? Is THAT what he and Bush collaborated on after they became best friends forever?

This man and his campaign are a joke. Has it even crossed the minds of the apparent simpletons running this campaign that when you cut off press access to your candidate then only makes logical sense that the press will go to the candidate willing to talk to them and give their stories.

Obama's lopsided coverage is a direct result of McCain's media policy! And it is not lopsided but more like the only story avaiable due to Republican media blackouts.

...that McCain looked like a turtle without a shell.

It's become even more apparent lately, that he has nowhere to hide his head.

How Many Buses?

He has 7 - 9 Homes, 13 cars, it is reasonable to ask how many buses this man has.

There is the old, and apparently now retired straight-talk express, and the more recently acquired forked-tongue express, and apparently now he has the no-talk express to add to his collection.

Just how many are there?

Anyone who has seen Palin's "speech" to her Wasilla church knows that this woman CANNOT be allowed near the mike without hours of rehearsal, not to mention a team of speechwriters and image consultants.

Give her a break people - it takes TIME to memorize those soundbites!

When the idiotic Iraq War is helping to create a catastrophe in Afghanistan, which in turn threatens to cause the descent of Pakistan into chaos, obviously reporters have to be kept away from McCain and Palin, lest the truth seep out to the American people (that neither Palin nor McCain has even a clue as to how to dampen down the flames of Islamic insurgency the Bush administration has fired up so successfully).

Perhaps... just PERHAPS... the media has decided

that enough is enough! Perhaps they are beginning to take their constitutional;y-protected responsibilities seriously. Perhaps they are fed up with being used as pawns by the McStain campaign (and the Republic Party) and are willing to start doing their jobs. Perhaps they have been awakened by people like Rachel Maddow who are asking the right questions and beginning to find answers. Perhaps the media are embarrassed by their rubber-stamp past with the McStain campaign and have realized that they aren't benefitting from being their lap dogs.

We can all hope, can't we?

This has blown up in the face of John McStain! He's looking very foolish, very vulnerable, very stupid in all of this.

The debate committee said the debate will go on.

Is McStain trying his best to lose? It almost looks that way! He wouldn't be able to do worse if he tried!

Even Laura Bush today said that Sarah Palin doesn't have foreign policy experience, but "she's a quick study." With friends like this...

It's a good day to watch the slow and certain death of the McStain campaign, right on television.

McStain cancelled his appearance on Letterman tonight. Guess who's replacing him?

Keith Olbermann!

Oh, this just keeps getting better and better...
