Hagee's Revenge? Videos Of Controversial Pastor Removed From YouTube

Posted by Sam Stein, Huffington Post at 2:19 PM on July 8, 2008.

As Christians United for Israel summit approaches, copyright and PR trump evangelism.

Late last week, with no prior notification, lawyers for the controversial evangelist John Hagee had a series of videos concerning the pastor removed from YouTube. The clips spanned from the contentious to the mundane; some included footage lifted from sermons Hagee had already made public, others involved documentaries made by filmmakers inside Hagee's conventions. All told more than 120 videos were taken down in the abrupt sweep.

The timing was, perhaps, more peculiar than the move itself. Clips that had been online for well over a year were now being subjected to "third-party" copyright infringement claims. And while Hagee had not been in the mainstream press since he and Sen. John McCain ended their official relationship a month prior, Hagee's Christians United for Israel annual summit is just days away, and at least one prominent McCain backer (Sen. Joseph Lieberman) is set to be in attendance.

Two individuals who have documented Hagee and posted clips on some of his more noteworthy sermons (including those interpreted as anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, and anti-gay -- Hagee, Wilson noted, once claimed that the Anti-Christ will be German, gay, a "blasphemer" and "partly Jewish - as was Adolf Hitler, as was Karl Marx") believe that nefarious motives were behind the YouTube shakedown.

"Obviously Hagee's minions orchestrated this move to suppress bad publicity ahead of their July summit," said Max Blumenthal, a freelance writer and videographer whose documentary on last year's Christians United for Israel summit was viewed by hundreds of thousands. "This is a response to the McCain debacle and concern over bad publicity for Lieberman's appearance," he charged.

"My guess is that videos [that] Hagee's people think are the most damaging are the ones they targeted," said Bruce Wilson, who first highlighted Hagee's claim that the Holocaust was God's means of hastening the apocalypse by driving the Jews to Palestine. "Clearly, the conference at the end of July and the fact that Lieberman is going to be there also played a role. That's my guess. They certainly don't want people to see the more controversial stuff."

Public relations officials for John Hagee Ministries denied foul play. Noting that several mainstream video clips -- including one from Hagee's speech at AIPAC -- were removed from YouTube as well, they also dismissed the notion that lawyers to the pastor were suppressing news or undermining free speech.

"Any material that was produced for John Hagee Ministries or Christian United for Israel was deemed to be a copyright infringement was taken down," said Juda Engelmayer, a spokesman from the firm 5WPR. "Anything that showed John Hagee giving a sermon - because he films and markets those as well - were taken down because they were considered copyright infringements."

While Engelmayer insisted that legal action to remove the YouTube videos had been in the works for a while, he acknowledged that he didn't "have an answer" as to why it was being pursued now. Many Hagee-related videos, it should be noted, remain on YouTube, and both Wilson and Blumenthal have moved some of their work to Vimeo, another video sharing service.

And yet, as Blumenthal and Wilson note, claims that this was merely an effort to combat copyright infringement contain several, glaring holes. For starters, Hagee had complained but never sought legal recourse for past publication of his sermons. Moreover, Blumenthal's work, while filmed at a Christian United for Israel event, was his own, not Hagee's. "There was no copyrighted material because it was me reporting on a public event," he said.

Even Engelmayer admitted that he didn't know how Blumenthal's particular work "fit the criteria" that the lawyers used. "But if he puts it up [on YouTube] again, I'm almost positive it won't be challenged."

There is little Blumenthal, Wilson, People for the American Way or others whose videos were swiped can do in the meantime. A first amendment lawyer with knowledge of copyright law noted that the pastor's lawyers can have YouTube take down relevant videos regardless of how little Hagee footage they include or how long they have been online. Indeed, YouTube's policy is to remove any video that a third-party claims is a copyright infringement, even if it seems to clearly be "fair use."

After a period of time -- likely, more than two weeks -- users can repost their clips and that third-party must then prove that the video violates copyright law. By then, however, Hagee's Christian's United for Israel, Washington-Israel Summit will likely have commenced.

Wow! This is the most clever legal twist I have ever seen. I'm going to have to remember this one, copyrite what you do, and you can maintain COMPLETE CONTROL. Don't you wish us normal people could do that?

I hope my friends here are always suspicious to the possibility this guy is responding to me. You gotta watch my back, so, thank you.

I live in San Antonio where this whackjobs church is. Cornerstone Church is huge and filled with thousands of whackjobs just like him. Recently it was infiltrated by a writer who did a story on it in Rolling Stone Magazine..I read the story and it pretty much sucked.

I can't wait for someone to put up more video on this nutjob, maybe some from that dumb ass conference. He's a little short, FAT man filled with nothing but hatred...and he preaches hatred of others..these megachurches PREY (not pray) on weak minded people with low self esteem. One's they can manipulate, control and mold to spread their nasty ways and beliefs. The men who started these churches and who run them are themselves crazy as hell and megalomaniacs filled with evil.

Why a preacher, who's goal it is to reach as many people as possible with his message, would be interested in having his sermons taken down from a site promoting his message for free?

Aren't folks like Hagee suppsed to spread the word and not suppress it? Take away his gun cause he keeps shooting himself in the foot. Poster boy for gun control.

I've laready been kicked off entirely on my high speed internet connection since being on Alternet- Hi Big Brother!F.U.!!!
Hagee's Heretical doctrine wants to ignite WW3 by Preemptively striking Iran, Which will piss of the Russians & china. but before all the destruction Starts 'jesus' will come down and 'Rapture' the Christians who follow Hagee- not any others, nor muslims nor Jews.
Hagee is not only a sociopathic meglomaniac, he has fiends in high places who are able to pull this scheme off- LIEberman called him a 'True man of God. like Moses'!!!!!Mac begged for his endorsement. Bush & Cheney have also been admirers.
Hagee claims to be doing gods work- but which 'god' would need such mere mortal assistance in a Grand Design "Could It Be Satan?" These Christian Talibanist are not only a threat to US, but to the World with the help of some very powerful men. Rev Wright was the sacrifical lamb, used to distract and minimlaize the focus put on these very Dangerously EVIL mens plans.

So, Pastor Hagee claims to be spreading and preaching the word of God-BUT, for a price. Discounts are available for those previously diagnosed with Clinical Depression, Suicidal tendencies, and "Teddy Bear" fetishes (Oh,God-I just gave myself a visual of that one-UGH!).

I'm a bit confused with his thoughts about the end times. He wants the United States to attack Iran in order to start the Apocalypse which will then start the "Redemption" thing where as all Christians are accepted into Heaven as long as they have been "Good". Now, if this has been God's plan from the start, and God created everything -including the "End Times", Apocalypse, and so forth-Then let God do all. Meddling with the process only shows an arrogance that maybe God needs some help with it. That's right-Pastor Hagee, lend Him a helping hand for your faith in God is weak. It must be for if your faith in God was strong, you would NOT be suggesting we forget one of the Ten Commandments and you would be preaching Mathew 5.9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God".
Man of God? Hell no. An angry and hate filled man with very little self worth and more than likely suffering from some type of depression-yes.
Shall we all pray for him and forgive him?
ABSOLUTELY YES!

When it was revealed that controversial pastor Wright was a long time minister to Barrack Obama the mainstream media attacked his positions with the fury of the "Spanish Inquisition." Accusing him of being anti-American and other outlandish accusations. Taking clips out of sermons without revealing the whole picture. It was a hack job effort on the mainstream media to discredit the reverend and Barrack Obama. Now it is revealed that Johnny Boy McCain has aligned himself with this doomsday prophet who preaches hate and intolerance and the mainstream media is silent. We the people must push this issue and force them to address it in the news. Write to CNN (Wolfy Blitz), MSN (Hardball Host - Fat Head Chris Matthews) and others and question them why there is no media coverage of the McCain-Hagee relationship. This guy is truly controversial and/or outright insane. I want fairness in the news coverage. Johnny Boy McCain is already sleeping with the enemy in choosing an economic advisor like Phil (deregulator) Graham who has single-handedly nearly destroyed the countries middle class of minorities with the sub-prime lending debacle. It is time for the mainstream media to get off their lazy asses and start scrutinizing Mr. Johnny Boy (War Hero?) McCain.

Why Christians United for Israel? Why not Christians United for God's Children...or Christians United for The Prince of Peace...or Christians United Against State Terrorism? For those who believe in the mythological anti-christ, he will most likely be the psychotic ruler of a murderous empire who commits unspeakable evil in the name of Christ; someone like George Bush, perhaps.

Religion is caused by any one or more of about half a dozen mental illnesses.
The truth about religion can be found in these books:

"The Neuropsychological bases of god beliefs" Dr. Michael A. Persinger MD,
psychiatrist 1987 "Religious people are just like my temporal lobe patients"

"The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bi-Cameral Mind" Julian
Jaynes Professor, Harvard University 1976 "Religious people are just like
schizophrenic patients"

"The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice" Roger A. MacKinnon, M.D.,
Robert Michels, M.D. W. B. Saunders Co. 1971 "Religiosity is a common
symptom [of] schizophrenic patients"

"The God delusion" by Richard Dawkins. "Religion is caused by a kind of
computer virus that infects the living computer, the human brain."

"The Science of Good and Evil" by Michael Shermer, 2004 "Morality and Ethics
are now in the jurisdiction of Science and greatly improved thereby."

Many books in the new science called "Sociobiology": Morals and ethics are
instinctive and they evolved.

"God: The Failed Hypothesis" by Victor Stenger. Scientific proof that god does
not exist.

"The God Part of the Brain" by Matthew Alper 1996. "The USA is anomolusly
religious because many early founder groups were religiously insane and fleeing
prosecution in Europe. Religion is a genetic disorder."

"The Accidental Mind" by David J. Linden, 2007 Belknap Press of Harvard
University Press. Religion is caused by the extreme klugeyness of the "designed"
by evolution brain. In particular, the narrative creation system cannot be turned
off. It generates false narratives that are believed by the generating person. This is
seen in experiments done in the laboratory. This book has the best explanation of
resistance to evolution: "There has also been an assumption that if one accepts the
idea that life developed without divine intervention, it necessarily follows that all
aspects of religious thought must be rejected. Those who take this line of
argument to extremes argue that when religious thought is rejected moral and
social codes will degenerate and "the law of the jungle" will be all that is left. It is
imagined by religious fundamentalists that those who do not share their particular
religious faith are incapable of leading moral lives." These suppositions are not
true many times over. Linden later mentions that the creationists [intelligent
design advocates] are exactly 180 degrees wrong rather than just a little wrong.
Being exactly wrong, they are unable to unlearn their error. See Sociobiology or
Sciobio.

"Scientists Confront Intelligent Design and Creationism" edited by Petto &
Godfrey, 2007. The ID and creationist crowd are trying to do away with science.
They see science as a "godless religion." Science is a process, not a religion.

"Manufacturing Belief" by Lewis Wolpert
http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2007/05/15/lewis_wolpert/

"The End of Faith" and "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris

"Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon", by Daniel Dennett
Let's do scientific research on religion and find out what causes it.

"Origins of the Modern Mind" by Merlin Donald 1991 "So what did you expect
from a brain that is based on the Chimpanzee brain?

"Atheism, A Case Against God" by George Smith

"God is not Great; how religion poisons everything" by Christopher Hitchens, 2007

Religion is a scam, at best.

As a sophomore undergraduate student in Physics, your homework in Probability
and Statistics class may include figuring out when the second coming would be
required, assuming that the bible was 100% true in the year zero. That is, when
would the bible be down to 50% true? The popular and professors' answer in
1965 was the year 500. The true answer: A friend of mine was born and raised in
Budapest, Hungary. As an adult, he came here and stayed. After 25 years, he
visited his home town of Budapest. He was unable to communicate with his high
school classmates because the Hungarian language had changed so much. The
correct answer is less than 25 years. The first gospel was not written down until
50 years after the alleged events and then in a different language. The people who
told the story were at about the same level of civilization as "wild Indians", I mean
Native Americans before Columbus got here. We have all played or seen played
the game called "Telephone" in which a story is passed down a line of re-tellers.
By the Sixth re-telling, the story has no resemblance to the original. The gospel
story had to have been re-told at least 6 times before it was mis-translated the first
time. [Note that whoever wrote it down the first time was free to write whatever
he wanted to. The storytellers were illiterate and unable to check his written text
by reading it. Besides that, he wrote in Greek rather than Aramaic.] Conclusion:
There is no truth anywhere in the bible, and there never was. There is no way to
know what "jesus" or "mohammed" or any other such character actually said or
did.

ALL of the jurisdictions that were formerly in the jurisdiction of religion have
been taken over by Science. There is no longer a need to debate the issue.
Religion is an unfortunate side effect of having evolved from a chimpanzee-like
animal in a very brief 6 or 7 million years. "God" will not save us from the
consequences of global warming or an asteroid impact or a tornado because there
is no such critter as "god.". Ethics and morality are instinctive, not derived from
religion. Female instinct has greater force in morality than male instinct because
the female is in command of the sexual encounter. Look up "Sociobiology". The
origin of the Universe is the subject of Cosmology which is part of astronomy
which is part of the science of physics.
Religion is a SCAM. ANY religion, there are 10,000 to choose from at any one
time. People keep inventing new religions [for the benefit of the "prophet," of
course] and forgetting other religions. ALL preachers, priests, imams, rabbis,
iatolas, etc. belong in jail for "grand theft, bunko type".

With a God like Hagee's, who needs Satan?

Guess what? When they try and start the RAPTURE by attacking Iran, they will find out they are 100% full of poop because they ain't gonna disappear to heaven. They will cause a giant RUPTURE but no RAPTURE.

Damn, if only these idiots could spell.
