Clinton Camp: Hillary "Misspoke" About Her Role in Bosnia Crisis

Posted by Sam Stein, Huffington Post at 2:10 PM on March 24, 2008.

In recent weeks, Clinton has sought to bolster her national security credentials by highlighting the role she supposedly played in Bosnia.
Hillary in Bosnia in 1996

An aide to Senator Hillary Clinton acknowledged on Monday that the New York Senator "misspoke" about the immediate dangers she faced when, as first lady, she visited war torn Bosnia.

Howard Wolfson, Clinton's chief spokesperson, said on a conference call that "it is possible in the most recent instance with which she discussed this that she misspoke, with regards to the leaving of the plane." Later, he was more certain: "On one occasion, she misspoke."

But Wolfson insisted that the first lady's visit was indeed perilous, as supported by "contemporaneous accounts" in the press.

In recent weeks, Senator Clinton has sought to bolster her national security and foreign policy credentials by highlighting the role she played in Bosnia.

"We came in under sniper fire," she recently told the press. "There was no greeting ceremony. We ran with our heads down, and were basically told to run to our cars."

The account has been, for better or worse, proven false, both by recent press reports and old video footage that shows the senator greeting a child in a ceremonial procession at the Tuzla airport.

On Monday, Wolfson sought to re-frame the debate by citing various newspaper write-ups from the 1996 trip to support the notion that Clinton was, in fact, in a dangerous situation.

"The trip to Bosnia marks the first time since Roosevelt that a first lady has voyaged to a potential combat zone," he read from a Washington Post story on March 25, 1996. "Other fist ladies have visited troops abroad but never in front-line positions."

But even that newspaper story included evidence directly contradicting Clinton's claims from last week.

"When she arrived in Tuzla," the story continued, "she was greeted by Emina Cicakcic who planted a kiss on each of Mrs. C's cheeks. The 8-year old Muslim girl then read a poem in English."

Asked once more to explain the discrepancies, Wolfson hinted that the senator was referring to sniper fire that was heard, at the time, in the hills surrounding the airport (something the senator herself has written about in her book).

"I think she clearly meant to say that at the event of several days ago," he said.

Here I thought she was too young to have Alzheimer's. It is so sad to have stricken her at such a youthful age.
Of course, she probably has Bush disease, not Alzheimer's. Memory is selective, based mostly on what ever her advisor's want her to remember or say.

Clinton is a fraud. She has always been a fraud. She talks a great deal about how hard work got her where she is today, but the fact is her association with Bill Clinton got her where she is today and yesterday as well.

What kind of a person would bring their sixteen year old daughter into a dangerous war zone. I'll not conjecture that this is beyond the scope of Clinton's ravenous ambition, but we can only know for certain that this was one thing she has not stooped to-yet

This is getting to the point where it is really starting to hurt the party. Carville's insistence that if you got a job from Bill, you owed Hillary your soul; this little flap when the Clintons went nuts when Obama quoted without attribution a line from his good friend who told him to use the line in his speech - even dragging it into the debates; Bill going out again and again and suggesting that McCain is a better choice tham Barack. It's time to pull the plug on this crew so we can move on.

Running Clueless

What's the explanation for Hillary's behavior? It's getting murkier each day. She wasn't intelligent enough to realize that her Bosnia visit was filmed and available on the Internet? Why is she smiling and laughing when she talks about sniper fire and running for cover? Really odd. Her mood swings and nasty attacks on Obama, while praising McCain, are also puzzling. All of this is also filmed and you would have thought Hillary would have noticed that running a campaign with some dignity and respect is more appealing to the voters. Guess she thinks all voters are really stupid like when she claims that an election is fair when her name is the only one on a ballot. What a disappointment - while she and Bill were trying to destroy Obama they only ruined and made a mockery of their own legacy.

"You know, our life in the White House was one of 100% commitment to peace around the world. Bill and I, and sometimes just Chelsea and I, visited a war at least once a week. Bosnia, Rwanda...well, maybe not Rwanda, but Northern Ireland, Baltimore. Getting shot at was so routine, it's no wonder I was a little confused. I remember when I was negotiating the peace in Northern Ireland, a bomb went off in the pub we had just left--Bill and I were thrown to the gutter. So when the Obama campaign tries to discredit me by showing a video of me NOT being shot at in Bosnia, my only response is "Where was your camera on my other 78 visits?"

We don't need another Liar in the White House

This is not the first time she has been caught lying about her foreign policy experience. This is like her "peacemaker" role she claimed about 'bringing peace to war torn Ireland', and other instances that she has given as examples and then have been debunked by those who actually participated in the events in question.
Throughout her campaign, she has done nothing but lie and deceive becasue she believes, like the old guard believes, that the American people are too dumb and stupid to check fact and we will all just take what she says as truth. She is an insult to us all, especially us women.
We have already had 7-8 years of lies and decptions by President Bush and look where we've landed because of his lies. If Hillary can't even be honest during her campaign, how can anybody expect her to not lie to the American people if she ever made it to the White House? impossible! She lies so natuarlly, I don't think she even knows the difference between lies and truth.
Barack Obama all the way!

Another "Thought" to throw out ~

A lot is being said about how "ugly" the democratic campaign is getting. (Some may say "that's an understatement".) But I think some past lessons were hard learned. Like you don't assume that people will not believe what the other side is hearing like Kerry did with the Swiftboaters. You have to come out fast and quickly when an assault is made. While it would be better if this was democrat vs. republican, obviously that isn't happening and its too bad. Much valuable time is being wasted.

I have been puzzled about the Clinton campaign in recent weeks in that there is no way mathematically she can win. Sure she can upset with the super delegates but it would be suicidal for the party if they handed it over to the candidate who did not have the most popular or delegate votes. And then her candidacy begs the question, why does she and Bill "keep eating their own" in the democratic party? Why does the press treat her as a co-candidate when she obviously isn't by any stretch of the imagination?

Don't you find it rather ironic that her campaign, and her husband most of all act, talk like Obama is just a "pesky little insect"? To infer that Obama is not "as patriotic as Hillary AND McCain or that she AND McCain would be ready on Day 1 is stunning.

No, I think she is setting McCain up to win the presidency and for her to take over in 4 years, that's what I think. Her "shot" if she can't get the nomination now is for Obama to get it, then to lose to McCain in the fall and for her to follow McCain to the White House.

Arm chair quarterbacking? You bet. Am I wrong? Gads I hope so!

potential Democratic candidate. One would think that would be the job of the rethugs. Of course since it's mostly the same people everyday, maybe it is their job. Those who aren't actively working for turdblossum might want to notice there's no discussion going on here. Day after day, in every post dealing with the 08 election your wasting your time preaching to your own little choir. The idiot chimp and mcpain must love you folks for your dedication. Okay go back to your rude, bilious bashing.

After that heroic account of yours, dodging sniper bullets and all, I was going to put you in for a medal but now I see you would have merited the medal about as much as some of the phony heros the Defense Department has been trying trying to glorify. You didn't mispeak Hillary, YOU LIED!
