The White House hit back at Newt Gingrich on Wednesday for a twitter post made by the former House Speaker accusing Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor of being a racist.

Early on Wednesday, Gingrich put up a post on twitter rapping Sotomayor for saying that her background as a Hispanic female allowed her to understand cases in a different, better, manner than her white male contemporaries.

"Imagine a judicial nominee said "my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman" new racism is no better than old racism."

Asked at the daily briefing to respond to the tweet, spokesman Robert Gibbs offered a bit of thinly-veiled frustration with Gingrich and warned against the escalation of racially heated rhetoric.

"I think it is probably important for anyone involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe aspects of this impending nomination," said Gibbs. "I think when the people of America and the Senate get a chance to look at more than just the blog of a former lawmaker that they will come to the same conclusion as the president did. ... I feel certain that partisan politics will take a back seat to common sense and open-minded decisions based on a full examination of the record, and I think that that's what every Supreme Court and judicial nominee deserves."

Playing up the racial aspect of Sotomayor's candidacy is a dangerous proposition for the conservative community, with the risk of offending wide swaths of Hispanics omnipresent. To this point, the charges of reverse-racism have been primarily trumpeted by non-elected officials. But as Greg Sargent pointed out first, the director of new media for the Republican National Committee, Todd Herman, re-tweeted Gingrich's post, bringing the line of attack ever closer to the rank-and-file GOP.

Digg!

Coming from the GOP? I think not. It would have been unusual if they didn't take this route, no?

The dinosaurs are dying off, I guess we should expect some griping along the way about how unfair it all is for them.

there is no such thing as reverse racism.

not until white men have gone through hundreds of years of slavery, oppression and blatent discrimination, do you have any ground to stand on. by crying "reverse racism", you just make yourselves look even more stupid.

People that have never experienced any kind of systemic discrimination or been otherwise oppressed have a hard time believing that such a thing happens to other people. Good people realize that their whiteness, their maleness, their heterosexualness, healthy body, or Christianity means that they will not experience those things and that they need to learn how to listen to and learn from people without their privileges to understand the problems.

How many conversations have I had with men that do not want to accept that I experienced sexism? More than I can count, and these idiots assume that because people don't treat THEM like that, that I must not be treated like that. Also that I couldn't possibly know what sexism is myself (my experience having been treated in a sexist way and not being treated that way is dwarfed by their never having experienced blatant sexism themselves, of course). Privileged people that don't understand their privilege make accusations of "reverse racism" or any other oppression against the privileged (why do handicapped people get the best spaces?). They're idiots and should be treated as such.

That Newt Gingrich is an idiot, however, is not news.

I am black(true) and I can see things much better than whites(idiotic self delusion)!" that is OK in your country?

So because vanilla boy is white he has a narrow perspective on the world and is far worse at judging things than them there alternately colored folk huh?

Who coined the term reverse racism anyway. Racism is racism no matter what color the speakers skin is. And saying you have a better perspective than a person of another color is simply racist.

So does Sotomayor have some unique perspective on the issue of abortion just because she is Hispanic. What about if she ends up hearing the case being brought to federal court about California's Prop. 8. Will she have a unique perspective on that gay rights case just because she is Hispanic? Is she actually going to make a better decision on those than a white person. She may have a better perspective on cases affecting people of color than say a white judge but to make a blanket crap statement about having a better perspective because of one's color does smack of racism. That's kind of like saying a gay person has a better perspective than a straight person which may be true for gay issues but is a blatent discriminatory statment.

I suppose Obama is the best president ever due to his amazing abilities, as a black man, to out think and out wit white men when it comes to perspective huh?

Get a grip and stop defending racist bullshit.

If the writer of this piece had put the comments in context.

She was commenting about a case involving discrimination of some sort, which one could presume that a woman would have more understanding of. But if you click on one of the links, you'll see her extension of those remarks, which actually talks about how she and other judges have to look BEYOND their backgrounds, how nobody has a corner on truth because of who they are.

I swear, these Alternet stories lately just seem to be written by somebody who just rolled out of bed and said the first thing they thought of, no background, no reflection. Yes, I just rolled out of bed too, but I'm not getting paid.

I love this 'Pot calling the kettle Black' attempt by the idiots on the Far right.
Rush is so blind with Racist hate he Dares diss the Navy Seals to paint the Obama admin 'Murders of teenagers'LOL.
worse yet his blind Rage over having a Bi Racial Pres, that he once again back hands the Military by going after Powell.
thanks Rush the Military personnel and their families (along with most moderate Republicans) are starting to realize you Far Right wingers only support the Troops when it's politically or economically advantageous to YOU. Otherwise 'under the Bus' They Go. Can't wait for the Racist's Drug induced Attack on Gates, Mullen and Petraus for their support of closing Gitmo and ending Torture. Keep talking Rush (and Cheney) '10,'12 and beyond will be Calkwalk for US Dems and our fellow True Americans.
As For Sotomayor, After that Pussy Galore Reference against Pelosi- the gender which constitutes OVER half of the Electorate- The Repugs haven't got a chance at winning the Female Vote in the foreseeable future. So No 'Love you long time' for the 'He-Man Women haters Club' at the Ballot box.The Repugs truely are becoming the Party of 'Circle jerks'. Bring some KY Lub Rush, Cheney hates to get chaffed.
Sonya will also bring over the few remaining Hipanics and possibly a good number of Catholics.
Add to that the multitudes Rush excluded from the invitation who don't make 400 Million...they could hold their Jerk Parties in a Country Club Bathroom Stall.Don't worry Craig will show you how it's done, boys.

while leading the protest against Clinton's adultery?

Same scenario I think. One exception: Newt is probably guilty of what he's charging; Sotomayor ain't.

Newt gingrich, a rodent obviously, who left his dying wife for another woman, and led the Contract ON America, is a pervert, liar, cheat, rich and republican. another joe McCarthy. His answer to everything is some perversive dialog which he fills his hands with fecal material from his anus and, like other repiglicans, throws it at specific targets, sometimes, and like a loose cannon most others. He needs to be dead.

Hey Newter! If I hate you for being...

Black or Hispanic or unpigmented, that is racism. It is uncaused by anything except my reaction to your skin color.

If you hate me back for that, that is not racism. That hate is not uncaused. Nor is it caused by my race, but by my behavior. The proof is that you didn't hate me before you knew that I was a bigot who hated you for your race. That's not racism, Newter, that's bigotism, which is acceptable, you fucking piece of albino pig shit. And that should be easy enough even for a Republican like you to understand.

But it's not, you piece of white trailer trash. Is that racism? No, because despite the truth of the comment, it's not why I resent you drawing breath, Casper.

Is that racism, Newter? No, you piece of dessicated colon. You're detestable because of your black soul, not your freakishly unpigmented skin.

Now STFU, you washed up has-been. Nobody gives a fuck what you think about Sotomayor. She: respected jurist being honored by being seriously considered for the Supreme Court as the final stage of a brilliant and successful career. You: last week's news, disgraced, disregarded and disdained. You are a has-been on your way down the ladder of irrelevance and on your way to an ignominious, alcohol-induced death that will be cheered instead of mourned - like Cheney.

Now go dive back into the toilet and return to your fetid sewer. Really.
