Palin Tells Fox News: Couric Annoyed Me

Posted by Sam Stein, Huffington Post at 11:43 AM on October 3, 2008.

"The Sarah Palin in those interviews was a little bit annoyed."

Appearing on a friendlier news outlet, Gov. Sarah Palin said she was "annoyed" with the way Katie Couric handled their interview and complained that the CBS Evening News host failed to give her the opportunity to take a proverbial axe to Barack Obama.

In a portion of her sit-down with Fox News correspondent Carl Cameron, Palin claimed that Couric's questions -- which produced a series of staggeringly embarrassing responses -- put her in a lose-lose position.

"The Sarah Palin in those interviews was a little bit annoyed," she said. "It's like, man, no matter what you say, you are going to get clobbered. If you choose to answer a question, you are going to get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to try to pivot and go to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about, you get clobbered for that too."

For the record, Couric asked her, among other things, what type of news sources she turns to for information, which Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, why Alaska's proximity to Russia gave her foreign policy experience, her opinion of the bailout package for Wall Street, and where she thought Vice President Dick Cheney erred. Which one of those questions was designed to trip her up (as opposed to, say, give viewers a better sense of her character and views) is tough to ascertain.

Later in her interview with Cameron, Palin offered a sense of what she thinks would have been a fairer set of questions. Unsurprisingly, they all would have provided her the opportunity to rail against Obama.

"In those Katie Couric interviews, I did feel that there were lot of things that she was missing in terms of an opportunity to ask what a VP candidate stands for, what the values are represented in our ticket. I wanted to talk about Barack Obama increasing taxes, which would lead to killing jobs. I wanted to talk about his proposal to increase government spending by another trillion dollars. Some of his comments that he's made about the war, that I think may, in my world, disqualify someone from consideration as the next commander in chief. Some of the comments that he has made about Afghanistan -- what we are doing there, supposedly just air raiding villages and killing civilians. That's reckless. I want to talk about things like that. So I guess I have to apologize for being a bit annoyed, but that's also an indication of being outside the Washington elite, outside of the media elite also. I just wanted to talk to Americans without the filter and let them know what we stand for."

Digg!

You mean a news outlet DIDN'T let you choose the questions that you were going to be asked in an interview? What type of penny ante operation are they running over there at the Tiffany Network?

Good grief - this woman is truly naive and clueless. Doesn't she even realize what an interview is?? How hard a concept is that to grasp? Someone asks you questions, you try to answer them as best you can. Or not, in her case. If you want a venue for spewing your memorized talking points, that's what stump speeches are for. Hard to fathom she has a degree in journalism? Truly, we will be in trouble if they win next month.

She's not talking to you or me or our side of the equation: she's talking to the dumba$$es on her side who will faithfully believe she was mistreated and try to generate some momentum from it... it works.

The Lady does not want to answer direct questions, she insists on being allowed to babble about not much of anything. Soon she'll be returning home and she can resume her gubenatorial duties and ramble on to her captive Alaskan audience. I wonder how many animals are still alive because she's been gone so long? I'll think of her visit to the lower 48 as my personal contribution to the wildlife of Alaska. You're all welcome. ANNA

Blaming all of her faults and problems squarely on someone elses shoulders. I find it funny how Republicans never make mistakes, or at least never admit to them like real men and women.

By the way Sarah the commercials and stump speeches are so you can spout rhetoric and rail against Obama. It is not the job of an unbiased reporter to set you up with favourable questions. You should understand that since your education and background is in Journalism. Or are you not an expert in that either?

Sarah in Control

Katie Couric's interview technique would have been much less annoying to Sarah Palin if she had only been able to wrest control of the questions.

She was able to pull this off much more successfully in the Vice Presidential debate. She proved herself an adept manipulator by rejecting Gwenn Ifil's questions and substituting her own topics. At certainly no loss for words, she then babbled on happily until the original question itself was completely forgotten.

Sarah loves being in control.

How unfair of Katie Couric. She did not put the proper questions to the poor, poor little girl in that horrible elitistic world. How wicked. Tell me, "Sarah" how will you cope and answer nasty questions from nasty foreign reporters "if" you are vice president (Heavens forbid)?.

What else did anyone expect from two dumbos facing each other? One has to wonder whether and how Palin finished highschool. She would make the end of the USA as we knew it inevitable.

...doesn't like actual real questions? I'm glad she's down here and, for now, not indulging in her favorite pastime-- hunting wolves and shooting them, from the safety of a plane.

And--yes, that was also on Faux, courtesy of the famous "field-dress a caribou" clip.

I just might loose all self-control. She makes me feel like a wolf running from her plane.

What the American people want you dimwit is for you to answer some questions without lies! These Repbulican values you constantly give lip service to are complete fairy tales.

What Republican's stand for? Cutting assistance programs for the poor and suffering. Controlling everyone's personal lives with "less government". WAR, WAR, and more WAR. Gotta get all those bad guys out there.

We know what you stand for idiot. How about what you plan to do? Oh yeah, that's right, trade out my $12K health insurance that I get from my employer and replace it with a "free-market" $5K plan. Thanks! That really, really helps! Create jobs! Too bad they are all in the military. Oh, yeah, and fight those crooks on Wall Street who are busy stealing Joe's six pack. I'm sure deregulating health care and privitizing social security so these crooks can steal them too is just a fantastic idea! I can't wait to see what else you jackasses come up with!

that the only news she ever watches is FOX NEWS. So she thought everyone did it like they do. I guess that would be annoying.

See how comfortable she looks in this "interview" with her buddies. Fox follows her rules by deferring to her. They probably gave her hot chocolate and cookies, and rubbed her back too.

I can't believe this is happening before my eyes.
Are she and McCain aliens in human body suits?

Give Sarah a Break

C'mon guys, you're all being a little hard on Sarah I think. After spending a few days with the political minions of the McCain campaign, she finally managed to memorize all those talking points. Now you're begrudging our pageant gal a chance to show how well she can parrot those points back to the American public?

I share her sense of annoyance. That katie would ask her other distracting questions is just in bad taste. I think questions like these would be closer to Sarah's taste:

-What is your favorite Alaskan fish?
-What additional powers would you like as Vice President?
-What do you think about making dog sledding the national sport?
-Please share some random comments about health insurance, but keep it general, please.
-Why are soccer moms so cool?

By the way... there was no need to ask Sarah what she reads. We all know: TV Guide, Field & Stream, Reader's Digest and National Enquirer (only for its foreign policy analysis).

Sarah got away with her crap in the "debate" and now goes back in hiding for the rest of the campaign. I hope the real networks hammer away at her for dodging all actual interviews. "Where's Sarah?" The voters want to hear more of her "qualifications."

You Betcha! This woman scares the hell out of me! Only women controlled totally by their husbands could possibly want to elect "this" woman as Vice President/President. She does not believe in equal pay for women and believes that the "State" knows best when it comes to a woman's body! And, she wants more war! I wish we could "trade" her to Russia for some good "Vodca"!!!! Siberia would be nice!
