Is Senator Clinton Beholden to an Anti-Gay Demographic?

Posted by Pam Spaulding, Pandagon at 6:51 AM on April 30, 2008.

Looks like Clinton is courting supporters on the wrong side of the culture war.

So why didn’t my outgoing governor just go ahead and say “faggot“?

ABC News’ Eloise Harper Reports: Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton received the endorsement of North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley Tuesday morning in Raleigh, NC. After touring a bio-manufacturing training center, Gov. Easley, First Lady of North Carolina Mary Easley and Clinton held a ceremony at NC State University. The Governor formally expressed his support saying that there was “nothing I love more than a strong powerful woman.” Easley concluded his remarks saying Clinton — “makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy“.

Note that Hillary, who was right there with the NC gov, said nothing about his remark. Of course Easley infamously received the endorsement of Equality NC in his re-election bid, then in a debate said he’d sign a marriage amendment if it hit his desk, so why should we be surprised. And who is Hillary trying to court here — the “traditional Southern conservative.” Take the homo money and run, as it were. (The Politico):

Easley is a meaningful ally in the culture war she’s waging against Senator Barack Obama, as she seeks to cast him as a hopelessly unelectable liberal elitist and to persuade the Democratic Party leaders who will decide the nomination – the “superdelegates” – to choose her instead.

Both of the Dem candidates for governor here have endorsed Barack Obama, btw. I don’t see Easley’s nod to Clinton as significant; what matters are mayors and state reps, and the majority have publicly endorsed Obama as well.

Hillary Clinton was backslapping laughing with the NC governor. The same Hillary Clinton who has sucked millions of dollars out of the LGBT community. The same Hillary Clinton who cannot use the words gay or lesbian in front of general audiences, the same Hillary Clinton who has a web site where there’s no way to find any information on her LGBT positions.

Activist Phil Attey, former Human Rights Campaign staffer and online strategist, had a lot to say. It’s below the fold.

This release landed in my inbox:

Today in his endorsement of Senator Hillary Clinton, Governor Michael Easley of North Carolina ended his speech with an anti-gay epitaph. The hateful and sexist comment was that in his opinion, Senator Clinton makes Rocky Balboa look like a “pansy.” Directly following the word “pansy” the two veteran politicians burst into laughter and then embraced on stage.

When LGBT activists across the country heard this, our jaws literally hit the floor, as did our hearts. Since the Pennsylvania primary, we’ve been concerned that Senator Clinton is now courting and beholden to an anti-gay demographic, but never did we ever expect to be so whimsically made the butt of a joke nor blatantly thrown under the bus by politicians we once revered and some continue to support.

The statement was calculated and hateful. Americans over the age of 50 are fully aware that the word “pansy” is that generation’s polite way of publicly saying the word “faggot.” Both Governor Easley and Senator Clinton are of that generation, and both of them know what he meant by the word. This was not a slip of the tongue. This is part of Senator Clinton’s new “Rocky theme” … a theme that sadly includes now gay bashing.

On behalf of the LGBT community, I demand the following three things:

  1. Governor Easley immediately issue a public apology for his use of hate speech and commit to launch a new state-wide campaign in North Carolina to educate the public on the issue of anti-LGBT hate speech and hate crimes.

  2. Senator Clinton make good on a previous campaign ascertain that that she would strongly “reject and denounce” any endorsement from someone who engages in hate speech by immediately rejecting and denouncing Governor Easley’s endorsement.

  3. Governor Easley face me in a public boxing ring in Raleigh, NC this weekend, so I can show him and the those who make such hateful comments, that if you go up against a real “pansy,” you’re going to end up pushing daisies. And, yes, I double yellow dog dare him.

this is bullshit, the idea of gay-bashing, in this instance. i watched the interview and read a couple articles concerning easley's support of clinton- where is the gay-bashing? there was none. i call 'bullshit'.

please refer to 'the onion' video offered concerning 'bullshit' as a campaign issue. this is an example of that very practice.

Ever since I heard Hillary constantly refer to the Obama comments about small town Pennsylvanians and always couching it as being made at a "san Franciscoooo fundraiser" it has become increasingly apparent that the LGBT community should be a little on edge with our gal Hil. She is going straight for the red meat of blue collar southern men and will continue to do it with West Virginia and Kentucky primaries coming up. Her tilt to the right on this is subtle but nonetheless intentional and deliberate.

Say what you will about the governor's remarks - it isn't about the specifics it's about the framing and in the cultural war Hillary is going to the right wing. This should come as no surprise. She has done the same to the anti-war movement - clearly defining herself as on the right side of the spectrum whenever she can get there.

If this is meant to imply that Hilary Clinton is less concerned with the issues of gay rights than Obama, or that his is willing to do more to further the cause, I'm not buying it. Clinton didn't write his speech, and this ill-chosen colloquialism was not hers.

On the issues, both Clinton and Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment, both want "Don't Ask Don't Tell" repealed, and both support adoption rights.

I doubt that her failure to rant and rave about the use of the term 'pansy' was a signal that she is callous to LGTB rights, and it seems to me that this is a bit silly.

Hmmm. First she sits down with Richie Scaife and gets his endorsement for the primary in PA and now she does a little "trash the Rev. Wright" speil with Bill O'Really? This is certainly heading in the wrong (read: Right) direction isn't it?

But Hillary was on Bill O'Reilly's Partisan Pole Dance.

Hillary and McCain are celebrating the Gas-Tax and Incoming Revenue for the Infrastructure Holiday, but it's ok, because the Fantasy Windfall Tax on the Oil Companies is going to make up for the loss when it gets through Congress, soon after the Truth-Telling Pigs come ripping out of Dick Cheney's eyes, ears, nose, mouth AND ass.

Hillary is throwing a Hail Mary to the few hundred people who still think George W. Bush is the worlds premier patriot, and thinks it's going to get her anything but some loony friends.

Apologies to present company who are associated with that wonderful state, but it seems to be full of befuddled old guys who, when they step up to a podium, say foolish, old-fashioned things:

Keith Olbermann had a vid tonight of a dude who introduced Hillary by saying that she's right for the country because of her high level of "testicular fortitude".

Who wants to make something of that? Get in line.

OK, let's suppose he'd made a statement about, say, race relations, and had used the word 'nigra' "in his own, dumb, out-of-time-out-of-tune, geriatric, dim old way".

Now do you get it?

Think harder...

... however, considering the mans age and the age of the term, it makes sense that he should known better. Of course, I'm always too eager to gut punch Hillary.

Just think if an Obama surrogate had used it. Would we get weeks of nonsense coverage like the Rev. Wright distraction?

I agree it's somewhat insightful AND a little silly, but I'm more offended by the "testicular fortitude" than the pansy comment. Clinton and McCain are playing that macho game, and your third demand puts you in the same box as those who will always project violence as an ultimate solution. Can we ever evolve from this sociopathic admiration of muscle and testosterone ? I mean, it's fine in a boxing ring, but at some point we need to stop being afraid to vote for those who use their brain more than their brawn....

A Monstrous Strategy

Oh, let's face it, Samantha Powers was right.

Hey, LBGT voters, welcome to the back of the bus -- the Billary started choosing the low road way back in South Carolina. Since her demographics started showing that Hillary is appealing to the least functional, most retrograde sectors of the electorate, she has clearly been courting them, and to hell with the rest of us.

It does produce some amusing moments, though, doesn't it? Ya gotta love her attempt yesterday at blue-collar solidarity with the regular-guy, borrowed-truck-driving Indianan -- and her admission that she hasn't filled up a car in years. Of course that would be decades -- the Gov'nuh's wife don't pump no 'tane either.

(grinning) I find myself wondering if they're so desperate to win just for the corps of servants! These are people who haven't had to look after their own basic needs for most of their adult lives, what with living in one Executive Mansion or another. But of course it's her opponent who's the "effete" (another code word), unfairly-privileged elitist...

To see an educated woman who I heretofore thought was highly qualified to head up our country, stoop to gutter politics and attempt to torpedo a class act like Barack Obama because he's apparently more popular than her, and not only stands in the way of her ambitions, but has a better than even chance of capturing the Democratic nomination and the November election. I think it really IS time for a change.

This female animal is an abomination raised out of her Religious right Theosophy. Oh, she may not profess any religion, but she will bow and scrape to any one with a billion dollars and 2,000,000 votes even if McCain IS already chosen for the job. It is the old shell game and even you market place Souks should be hip by now. You have been shelling out these past two millennia to an effete bunch of Glorianus snobs who have defecated upon the people in the name of Christ, that means the Church in case you missed it. The Church and Halliburton rule and if it takes another witch burning Pogrom to get their point across they will be up to it. Only, we are the witches in this dispensation. Where were you people during the Mena Fiasco and the mysterious murders surrounding that crew of money launderers? I did not put myself in the position I am in as a bi sexual male I inherited it from my upbringing. I don’t buy into that Genetic Misfit horse manure. I am what I am because I want to be what I am and that is all that I am! And no Jim crack religionist is going to pound me into his square hole. Listen all you Christ wannabes, your own Master did not go around shoving religion up people’s souls. He said, “If you are met with hostility or derision knock the dust from off thy feet and get thee hence from that place!” Believe me I will not stop you nor offer you resistance I am a follower of the Prince of Peace. As for Hilly bubulatz, she has her reward and it is not up to you or I to tear her away from it, but she cannot have me or MINE!

Easley supports Clinton

Gov. Easley is supporting Hillary because he knows the country is in trouble and he seems to believe she can hit the ground running in order to turn things around QUICKLY. He was on Charlie Rose two nights ago and was impressive. He stated the US is becoming a second tier nation. For Alternet to reduce America's serious problems to gay politics is discouraging and just what the GOP wants the democrats to do.

By the way... NC is one of the last nice places in the US. Easley has done a good job. Could be the first time since Carter (1976) that NC will go Democratic in November.
