Iraq War Vet to Limbaugh: You're the Phony

Posted by Jon Soltz at 1:00 PM on September 27, 2007.

Jon Soltz: My challenge to you, Rush, is to have me on your show so you can say all of this again, right to the face of someone who served in Iraq.

This post, written by Jon Soltz, originally appeared on The Huffington Post

As Media Matters reported today, Rush Limbaugh, on his show said that those troops who come home and want to get America out of the middle of the religious civil war in Iraq are "phony soldiers." I'd love for you, Rush, to have me on your show and tell that to me to my face.

Where to begin?

First, in what universe is a guy who never served even close to being qualified to judge those who have worn the uniform? Rush Limbaugh has never worn a uniform in his life -- not even one at Mickey D's -- and somehow he's got the moral standing to pass judgment on the men and women who risked their lives for this nation, and his right to blather smears on the airwaves?

Second, maybe Rush doesn't much care, but the majority of troops on the ground in Iraq, and those who have returned, do not back the President's failed policy. If you go to our "Did You Get the Memo" page at VoteVets.org, there's a good collection of stories, polls, and surveys, which all show American's troops believe we are on the wrong track, not the right one, in Iraq.

Does Rush believe, then, that the majority of the US Armed Forces are "phony?"

Third, the polls and stories don't even take into account the former brass who commanded in Iraq, who are incredibly critical of the Bush administration, and it's steadfast refusal to listen to those commanders on the ground who have sent up warning after warning. Major Generals John Batiste and Paul Eaton left the military and joined VoteVets.org for that very reason.

Does Rush believe that highly decorated Major Generals are "phony soldiers?"

Finally, as Media Matters notes, just recently, members of the 82nd Airborne in Iraq wrote a New York Times op-ed, very critical of the course in Iraq, and suggesting it was time to figure out the exit strategy. Two of them just died. Will Rush call up their grieving parents and tell them that they should stop crying, because they were just "phony soldiers?"

Get the point here, Rush?

You weren't just flat out wrong, you offended a majority of those of us who actually had the courage to go to Iraq and serve, while you sat back in your nice studio, coming up with crap like this.

My challenge to you, then, is to have me on the show and say all of this again, right to the face of someone who served in Iraq. I'll come on any day, any time. Not only will I once again explain why your comments were so wrong, but I will completely school you on why your refusal to seek a way out of Iraq is only aiding al Qaeda and crippling American security.

Ball's in your court.

Digg!

...and Senate, so now you should all be jumping into action, right? Time to condemn Rush with a resolution slap-on-the-wrist for slandering our soldiers and generals, right? The resolution writting pens must be spitting out ink like crazy.

And I'm sure everyone that attacked Hillary for not coming out quickly enough against MoveOn.org is right now trying to find someone, anyone, in the media to take their statement of condemnation for Rush's comments. All those guys on the right are just rushing to action, right?

Okay...I'm waiting...

and I'm prepared to admit that. That's why I have nothing but admiration for those who are prepared to put their life on the line for their country.
Limbaugh like me is chickenshit, however unlike me he cannot admit his failings so instead he shrouds his cowardice in false patriotic dribble daring to challenge the brave service men and women who offer dissenting voices.

I hope you make it on the show Jon, however unless Rush's dealer provides him with some extra strength happy pills I fear he will not have the guts to make his pathetic point to a real veteran.

obnoxious for years. How dare he belittle combat soldiers when he so artfully dodged the draft during Vietnam because of a cyst on his butt. It is particularly offensive that the warmongering chickenhawk did this while my husband was drafted and served in Nam, another unjust war. And it's not that I hold anything against draft-dodgers who spoke out against that war--it's the hypocrisy baby.

Where do all of these demagogue come from?

I can recall when the airwaves were not littered with vermin like Limbaugh, O'Reilly, and those retards on Fox.

About the only propagandists that existed at the time, the early eighties, was Paul Harvey (we still can't get rid of him). Apparently, the FCC is out to lunch when it comes to taking away licenses from Fox for defective news reporting.

The question remains, why all of a sudden do we have these people on the airwaves spewing that shit every day? What is the agenda?

The country is left/left-of-center . . . the elite powers-that-be are right/right-of-center . . . by pushing the extreme right hawks like Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin et al, they manage to look their right/right-of-center stance look reasonable . . .

It's very Hegelian, actually . . .

Jon,
When you get invited to visit with the esteemed lumbug, stop over in Raleigh and get in touch with me. I will let you take my k-bar with you in case you don't have yours.
I haven't needed it since I came home from my 2-1/2 year tour in the Nam.
You are more than welcome to use it if you promise to clean it up after you get done with that useless piece of s*&t.

And just have to say a few things here:

1) I'm not sure I support Rush's "phony soldiers" reference but Media Matters, like they often do, is taking it out of context. The point was, that anti-war people carefully cherry pick which soldiers they talk to.

2) Since votevets is an anti-war group, it is not very representative of the military as a whole.

3) I have served two tours in Iraq, and will tell you that most soldiers do support the mission. The majority do NOT think like you, Jon Stolz. You are dead wrong on that point.

Limbaugh is only an ENTERTAINER!

A radio entertainer, who makes a living by talking. Limbaugh was not elected or appointed as a political figure, and only stays on the air because people listen to him.

I quite liked Limbaugh when Bill Clinton was president, he had some quite funny material, and even funnier parody songs on his show. Now he is just pathetically trying to support the Bush regime in its death throes. The humour has gone, and we have to turn to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert for our entertainment from mocking the powerful.

I don't like rap music, so I don't buy the records. I don't like Limbaugh any more, so I don't listen to his show - same thing.

Here's the thing. No one anywhere in a position of presumed power is going to take on this idiot. Not until there is a concerted effort to counteract the jingoistic, knuckle dragging media he represents. Nor will he have any legitimate representative of a countervailing perspective on his show. He's a coward. He gets away with this crap because there are apparently many, many consumers out there who eat it up. Where is the weight of an organization like MoveOn when it comes to a massive media counter-strategy with broad coverage to override this drivel? If the growing veterans organizations speaking out against the war are going to succeed, they need to be part of an effort to get more coverage for their perspectives. It speaks volumes that the only corporatist media persona who ever takes on someone like Limbaugh is Olbermann. When he gets beyond the status of "thank god we've got him" to being one of several -if not many- counteracting Limbaugh, we''l see some needed, overdue change.

Rush would be apt to have this man on his show. With 3 large goons standing behind him to jerk him away from Rush, should the pills wear off and Rush realizes that once again his mouth overloaded his ass.
Why does anybody listen to Rush? Anybody with a functioning mind, that is.
That is akin to watching Faux News to find out what is going on.

I called three radio stations in my state yesterday to tell them
to take Limbag off the air. I know this may be impossible but at least we will have our say. It would also take a concerted
effort on our part to call the advertisers on his show and tell we will not buy their products. (Not that I could ever listen to
his show to find out who the advertisers are).

I recall that Keith Obermann pointed out that Rush Limbaugh was the one who first coined the "Petraeus/Betray Us" code a few month ago. How that windbag can allign himself with the military when he slanders them so voraciously on his radion show is amazing to me. He's just another Cracker who can't get over that guilt for the Civil War.

You folks are forgetting that Limberger is "an honorary member of Congress!" Gingrich, the Chickehawk Speaker of the House, declared fellow chickenhawk Limbaugh to be an honorary member, and swore him in. You can look it up!
It takes a twisted drug addled mind like chicken Rush's to denigrate real soldiers! Remember, they just don't come any tougher than draft dodging armchair warriors! Look at Bush! Look at Cheney! Tough as cooked Spaghetti noodles! These two are Limbaugh's favorites!
I wouldn't fit in since I am a veteran of 28 years active duty. I must be one of Fatty's "phoney soldiers" because I think the Imposter's war is a colossal blunder.

Today's last hour of the Bill Bennet radio show was devoted to convincing everyone that Rush did not mean what you claim he said. An hour on Bill Bennet show on phony soldiers? Amazing. Not a minute was spent for Kerry and his SWIFT detractors. Not a blink for Bush's WMD. And not a "dah" for the lies that Cheney tells. This feaux pax by Rush was like the sinking of the Titanic. The boys on the right were doing their best to shore up Liberal Radio and Television. Don't you think?

I agree with one writer

"unlike me he cannot admit his failings so instead he shrouds his cowardice in false patriotic dribble daring to challenge the brave service men and women who offer dissenting voices."

Bennet spent hour l trying to convince his devoted brain-dead listeners that he meant something else.

Another writer said

"He's a coward. He gets away with this crap because there are apparently many, many consumers out there who eat it up. "

In fact, this country is full of fatties eating up everything without questioning what they put into thier mouth or heads.
Most soldiers are a bunch of wimps anyway and phonies. They won't admit to themselves that they are terrorized by their leadership; bullied by them; that what they are doing to others what they should not be doing. This is cowardice on a grand scale. And killing iraqi babies with their unwanted democracy and bravery is blind nonsense. You guys are criminals doing the bidding of a criminal. War, if you don't know it, is illegal and so is going to someone else's country and destroying their way of life. That is more important than your honor or valour or your phony idead of tough soldiering. That drug addict Rush is only doing the same bidding of your fearless leader in the white house. Your complaint is with him, not this pudding-faced Rush.
