Our Troops Don't Get a 'Time Out' for the Financial Crisis

Posted by Jon Soltz, Huffington Post at 4:49 PM on September 24, 2008.

So, because there's a financial crisis, Senator McCain cannot take 90 minutes to address how he will face challenges around the world.

So, because there's a financial crisis, Senator McCain cannot take 90 minutes to address how he will face challenges around the world, including how and when he will send American troops to fight, and possibly die.

Wow. Troops would sure love that luxury.

Unfortunately, though, insurgents in Iraq don't stop shooting at us, or setting IEDs, because our Commander in Chief needs a breather to figure out Wall Street.

Al Qaeda in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region don't send our troops notes that read, "Hey, I hear you guys are tied up with Wall Street. Your President needs to concentrate on other things, so we'll give you a break. So, to make things easier on you, here's our coordinates."

Nor do our troops get a few days to figure out how to hold onto an area we've secured, if there's an unexpected attack. Sometimes we need to deal with multiple flare-ups at once in any warzone. We'd sure love a time-out, but sadly, the world isn't such a nice place that it gives us that kind of pity.

When you're Commander in Chief, I don't think there'd be a worse signal to send to our troops in harm's way than to say, "Hey, hold on guys. I know you're getting killed over there, but I have to get a time-out here to deal with Wall Street."

If troops need to multi-task without a break, is it so wrong that we demand that a potential President-in-waiting prove that he can manage a financial crisis, and still address crises around the world for 90 minutes? And, if a potential President-to-be can't manage that, is it wrong to think that maybe he ought not just suspend a debate and the campaign, but move aside and get out of the race?

Just something to think about.

Unfortunately most American's have forgotten about the war. Being unable to focus on more than one area of pain, the economy has become the focal point in the body politic. Too bad we're unable to see the interconnectedness between these two events...

It's part of the proto-fascist/neocon gambit, or tactic, of pretending to be "mature" or "civil" by setting aside an important event for the sake of a perceived crisis. What's really behind the time-out is a tactical disruption of the opponent's flow in the hope that the party getting the time-out gets to set the agenda, the frame and the result.

How many city council meetings have I sat through watching Republikaaners do this with substantive important community issues, only to later do an end-run around the democratic process and do what they want over and above the community consensus. And the pretense of politeness, civility, and mature leadership (who took the time out to "pause" and "carefully consider a reasoned solution"--all euphemisms for distraction gambits) always results in a thwarting of the common good for the personal benefit of the elite few.

And here is McFuckup doing it on a national level... the same damned thing.

I'm grateful for the analogy to soldiers fighting the Republikaaner cause not getting a time out in their execution of the Bushed-McFuckup agenda. Like a kick in their balls, where such kicks most definitely need to be placed. Until republikaaners can show they are grownups and honest and good-faith partners, they deserve no courtesy, no civility, no politeness, no time out, no pause, no quarter. NONE. They've destroyed the nation (I keep wondering if that's so bad for the rest of the planet, really) with the help of the owning class neo-liberals and the civility of the owning class liberals. No more. You don't get to play anymore. You blew your turn at the helm and now we're on the reef with a Cat-5 bearing down on us. You're done.

If the "messiah" of November 4 doesn't measure up, there will be blood... because no one will have the luxury of a time out anymore.
