Gimmicks are doing a good job of replacing writers on The Colbert Report, if last Thursday's interview with Lou Dobbs is any indication. Colbert turned the interview on its head with a hilarious conceit of interviewing Dobbs as his Spanish-language counterpart, "Esteban Colberto." Did hilarity ensue? Oh yes -- including an in-studio barbed-wire fence, which Dobbs viewed with approval: "It's very impressive, and better than some of the fence along our border now!"

Dobbs seemed to be taking it all in stride and enjoying himself, especially since Colberto was plugging his book, The War On The Middle Class. More to the point, Colbert conducted the entire interview in Spanish...and Dobbs answered in English. Also, dancing girls! I think Colbert rocks a purple blazer almost as well as Cindy McCain. High praise, that.

Colbert didn't interview Dobbs in Spanish. It was obviously edited in. The fence was real though and was there the last time he interviewed him as well.

It's hard to call Colbert and Stewart by their true names. Alternet wants us to forget that Colbert and Stewart are crossing picket lines to write their own material. Somehow, their satire is worth more than solidarity. Bull$hit. Every worker across America that's fighting for justice is hurt by their actions. And for what? So we can laugh at Lou Dobbs? We already know he's a reactionary moron who can't hold his drink. Get off your high horse and back on the picket line.

I find it hard to understand how progressive journalists cover Stewart, Colbert, Degeneris et al without mentioning their vile strike-breaking. I wrote a piece on this entitled Daaaamn you, Jon Stewart! that can be found at www.suekatz.com

I'll return when you come to your senses.

Feel free to send an e-mail alert with the headline:

"ALTERNET HONORS WGA STRIKE, WILL CEASE POSTING STEWART OR COLBERT VIDEOS UNTIL PRODUCERS AGREE TO PAY THEIR WRITERS"

Every time you repost a Colbert or Stewart video, you are increasing the value of their product with free distribution/advertising for their brand - do you not get that?

As a new media professional, I urge AlterNet to take a principled stand and refuse to post the work of wealthy picket-line-crossing scabs who are keeping immense profits for themselves while denying their workers a fair portion of the wealth that the writers' labor has created.

Unless of course you are now buying into the Wall street Journal horse-hockey about how labor does not create wealth, somehow it is ownership and "risk" that creates wealth...

Get it together Alternet...you make me sad...

Why Labor Unions Lose Support
Posted by: meadowlake59 on Jan 19, 2008 9:51 AM

The comments here from union supporters only help to undermine any popular support that the writers guild might enjoy from J.Q.Public. Considering that union membership in this country has steadily fallen since the early '80s, any support from other unions has shrunk and it becomes more necessary to elicit support from the non-union public. Consequently, it makes more sense to try to appeal to people through logic and reason than name-calling and personal attacks.

My father was a union man for 35 years and I would describe my politics as to the left of Lenin/Lennon (Vladimir or John). But attacking Colbert or Stewart--who are in actuality the creative lead of the show--smacks of intoleration rather than solidarity. Should they stop broadcasting entirely? That would be an infringement of their right to work--just as no one should infringe on anyone's right to organize as a labor union.

However, a thought has occurred to me that I did not consider and is worth a caveat. If Steven or Jon is a member of the Writer's Guild then indeed they have broken a trust and are in violation of union protocol. If they are not and are not employing non-union writers (they are doing the work themselves with little or no help) then they are free to continue and should face no recriminations--in my opinion.

Now that's really funny. Obama fathered a Black child.

As for Stewart/Colbert being scabs, they were forced back to work. Either go back or break their contracts. If you want to point fingers, the directors just settled, point at them.

Yes, I don't like crossing the picket (on)line to see my boys. But they are doing good political analysis --- esp. Stewart on the Rep SC debate & his interviews w/ Zogby, Goldberg, & Bolton.

it is unreasonable to demand or expect that Stewart and Colbert shut down for the writer's strike. these shows are political in nature, and on principle, important to our nation as it is presently an election year.

y'all remembered it was an election year right?

cut them some slack. these are important issues.

WHY is watching a rich white guy play an exaggerated stereotypical Hispanic funny?

Now, if we had a Hispanic guy, or better yet, a Hispanic woman, playing a stuffy white guy THAT would be funny.

We now have a woman and black man running as mainstream Presidential candidates, but our supposedly progressive and subversive political comedy is still dominated by two white guys?
