McCain Surrogate Falsely Suggests McCain Does Not Want To Overturn Roe

Posted by Faiz Shakir, Think Progress at 1:21 PM on August 25, 2008.

More multi-messaging from team McCain.

In a new ad for John McCain, Debra Bartoshevich, a self-described "proud Hillary Clinton Democrat," announces that she opposes Barack Obama and will vote for John McCain. At a press conference this afternoon, Bartoschevich made this puzzling statement:

Going back to 1999, John McCain did an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle saying that overturning Roe v. Wade would not make any sense, because then women would have to have illegal abortions.

Michael Scherer writes, "Was she going off message? Or are Republicans engaging in some cagey multi-messaging?"

In 1999, McCain did indeed tell reporters that he "would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade." But in recent years, McCain has repeatedly said Roe "should be overturned." Here's what his own campaign website says:

At the Saddleback Forum just a couple of weeks ago, McCain left no doubt about his position: "I have a 25-year pro-life record in the Congress, in the Senate. And as President of the United States, I will be a pro-life president and this presidency will have pro-life policies. That's my commitment, that's my commitment to you."

Update McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina -- who also attended today's press conference with Bartoshevich -- has misrepresented McCain's position on choice in the past. "Newsweek magazine reported, she told women in Columbus, Ohio, that McCain 'has never signed on to efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade,' the landmark Supreme Court decision confirming the right to abortion."

Digg!

Obviously Debra Bartoshevic doesn't give a rats behind about the United States, women, health care or any of the other issues Hillary Clinton is passionate about. Jumping over to the mccain camp when Senator Clinton has made it VERY CLEAR that she supports Democratic leadership is like slapping Hillary in the face. You should have refused the kool-aid, Debra

To those woman democrats who supported HRC and will vote for McCain because they feel that their candidate was mistreated during the primary are acting irrational. They are playing right into the hands of the republicans. This will help advance the republican idea that woman have no place in politics because they can’t think rationally. If you help elect McCain you will set back the movement HRC has worked so hard for, the idea that a woman can do it. Before you cast you vote for McCain consider the fact that you are voting against your own beliefs. Regardless of how you feel about the course of that the primaries took, the fact is that Barack AND Hillary have the same philosophy which is the exact opposite to McCain’s. Do not let you emotions over rule your intellect. Seriously consider the results of your actions.

Is this Debbie B a real person or an actress? This ad looks/sounds like a psy-ops misinformation plan to corral the Knows-Nothing voter, not PUMAs.

No HRC supporter would ever support John McCain and the MSM should stop pushing that silly talking point and instead investigate the validity of this Debbie character. No offense, but she just doesn't seem to be that smart to be a HRCer, cuz chipping away at Roe is no-prisoner-land for most HRCers. So Debbie, read up or go back to McCaindyland and cheer to vote because you truly bee-leeve he would be the best Prez, EVER!
