In Debate Over Permanent Bases In Iraq, U.S. Seeks Authorization For War In Iran

Posted by Faiz Shakir, Think Progress at 3:10 PM on June 11, 2008.

Iraqi's are increasingly uncomfortable with US demands in negotiations on the Status of Forces Agreement.

The ongoing negotiations between Iraqi leaders and the Bush administration over the future role of the military occupation “have turned into an increasingly acrimonious public debate.”

The Bush administration’s demand for 58 permanent bases in Iraq — a near doubling of the current 30 bases — are causing Iraqis to warn that the status of forces agreement would be “more abominable than the occupation.” The administration is reportedly holding hostage “some $50bn of Iraq’s money in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to pressure the Iraqi government into signing an agreement.”

The reason the White House is so hell-bent on signing a long-term agreement may have less to do with Iraq and more to do with Iran. According to press reports of the ongoing negotiations, the Bush administration is seeking the “power to determine if a hostile act from another country is aggression against Iraq.” Ali al Adeeb, a leading member of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s Dawa party, confirmed:

The Americans insist so far that is they who define what is an aggression on Iraq and what is democracy inside Iraq…if we come under aggression we should define it and ask for help.

The administration’s request would seemingly allow the U.S. to brand Iran as an enemy of Iraq and attack Iran in the name of defending Iraq pursuant a legal obligation under the status of forces agreement.

Other details from press accounts confirm that the Bush administration has one eye on Iran in the course of its negotiations with Iraqis. The Washington Post explains that the administration is seeking “the prerogative for U.S. forces to conduct operations without approval from the Iraqi government.” Moreover, the U.S. wants control over Iraq’s airpsace:

The American negotiators also called for continued control over Iraqi airspace and the right to refuel planes in the air, according to [Sami al-Askari, a leading Shiite politician], positions he said added to concerns that the United States was preparing to use Iraq as a base to attack Iran.

Since the administration is unlikely to get an Iran war authorized through Congress, it’s instead trying to sneak it through the Iraqi parliament.

Digg!

The US wants to determine that Iran is an enemy of Iraq??!!
Maybe the US administration should read the news. Iran and the current Iraqi government are FRIENDLY towards each other.

And, together with the fact that Iran has made overtures of peace towards the US recently, and you can see that the coming war on Iran (a war that could involve nuclear weapons being used by the United States or Israel) will be all for nothing.

Well as the song says, Freedom's just another word for nothing left to loose. And by the time Halliburton, KBR, and the Pentagon are through with Iraq they should be free as a bird!

Reid and Pelosi need to be not only Thrown out of Office, but Stand trial along with the rest of these Crimianls who have Seized Our Country.
Pelosi had the audacity to take Impeachment of the Table- Who gave her that authority? Not US!Reid states that the Bush admin only has 5 months left so why bother. Check your calender Harry, it's 7 Months- penty of time to get criminals like You to pass a resolution for War Again!
If the Democrats in Congress think their Crime of Complicity will be overlook because there is a ground swell of support for Obama they are sorely Mistaken.
As A Life Long Dem, I am out to not only throw all their Asses OUT, but push to have many stand trial for Comlpicity in Treason, War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity. The Bushies could not have done so much damage without your Help Dems! They were Told to get US out of Iraq, they have been Told 3/4 of this country is against the path this Admin has taken. Funny no one bothers to survey about how many Americnas want this Admins Asses on a Silver platter, or What the 'Approval' Rating is for Congress is at this time.
I for One will NOT be voting for Any Democrat and will be the First to sign All Recalls for the So Called 'Democratic' party members currently in Office if they happen Not to be Up for Re-election. Dems will NOT be forgiven even if Obama wins In Nov. Fools! Your Party is Not on the Dice Either! And Frankly if Obama does Not Publically commend Rep Kucinich in this Effort either- he will have broken the last string holding me to this Party of Accomplices! In Fact Get out the Recycled Paper Plates there are far to many and the Silver Platters are Far too Good!

Yes it is amazing to behold the Rethuglican version of Freedom . We get to tell them what constitutes aggression against them and we get to tell them that we will be in THEIR country FOREVER and Oh BTW we will NOT be subject to THEIR Laws .
Here's a thought let the Iraqi's VOTE on this and also about how much longer they WANT us in THEIR Country . I suspect Bush would see a lot of those purple fingers he so loved giving us a great big FINGER and God knows we certainly DESERVE it
