Gates says 2nd carrier in Gulf is ‘reminder’ to Iran

Posted by Cliff Schecter, Cliff Schecter's Blog at 3:35 AM on April 30, 2008.

Secretary Gates has some curious ideas as to what constitutes military escalation.

Nervous? Me?….

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that sending a second U.S. aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf could serve as a “reminder” to Iran, but he said it’s not an escalation of force.

No, no, of course it isn’t. We trust Gatesy completely.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Mexican leaders, Gates said heightening U.S. criticism of Iran and its support for terror groups is not a signal that the administration is laying the groundwork for a strike against Tehran.

Just because I’m holding a gun to your head and shaking my fist in your face, why in the world would you think that’s intimidating? I’m just reminding you that you will feel intense pain and might possibly notice severe bruising. If you’re at all concerned that a bullet could find a way into your skull, well, that’s just you being all paranoid and stuff.

Still, he said Iran continues to back the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Still, it would be all your fault if the gun went off. Not mine.

Gates played down the addition of a second carrier to the Gulf, saying that the number of ships there rises and falls continuously. He said he doesn’t expect there to be two carriers there for a long time.

Don’t think twice about the switchblade I just pulled out of my shoe. The number of weapons I bandy about rises and falls continuously, depending on my mood. I don’t expect there to be a gun and a knife there for long. Just the gun. And my fists. Or maybe the knife and my fists. Decisions, decisions. Gosh, you know me, good ol’ trigger-happy Laffy! Expect the unexpected! Aren’t I the most adorably unpredictable psycho ever?

Asked if the carrier move went hand in hand with the rising U.S. rhetoric against Iran, Gates said, “I don’t see it as an escalation. I think it could be seen, though, as a reminder.“

Silly you! I don’t see the gun, knife, and 2 fists as threat! I guess, though, if you really want to split hairs, it could be seen as a reminder… of how I could kill you at any moment.

Sleep well.

Digg!

The Iranians certainly don't want the Taliban in Afghanistan. They helped us install Karzhai at the Bonn meetings in 2001. In addition they allowed shipments of weapons across Iran and into Afghanistan to be used against the Russians even though at the same time the embassy hostage crisis had not been settled. They have effective anti ship weapons from China and a well trained army. It would be better to use diplomacy to save lives on both sides.

I doubt that Defense Secretary Gates is as dense as he appears in his comments about the warships steaming toward the Persian Gulf. He knows that this is a provocative gesture, and more importantly, the Iranians know it, so that is why they will do nothing other than keep their forces on the ready.

I hate to admit that I am beginning to miss the days of the Soviet Union, where there was at least some sort of counterweight to our imperialist ambitions.

Sure, those were days of MADness but there was something to be said for a world with more than one true superpower.

The DOD should change its name as a reminder of what it has become under the Bush administration. It could be DOW - Department of War. It could change to BPA - Bush Private Army. Or in these days of increasing doublespeak, it could be called the DOP Department of Peace. There's no limit to what Americans will blindly believe.

when military planners prefer to launch their bombing campaigns.

All the cruise missiles in the U.S. arsenal have been shipped to the Persian Gulf theater, the targeting packages have been fully programmed and the crews have been training and on a high level of readiness for months. There are some mid-level officers that see what's going on and are leaking information, hoping to warn WW V off. Admiral Fallon is now out of the picture.

Has anyone else been watching PBS's CARRIER? Talk about 10 hours of pure propaganda. Just imagine if the USS Nimitz or another carrier were to get "hit by the Iranians" in the gulf with massive casualties, do you think the Congress would then try to prevent the obliteration of everything in Iran not connected to oil production?

Over 70 million men, women and children live in Iran.

The vast majority of the Iranian educated class oppose Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (who has no real power in Iran, btw) and the Ayatollahs, and are friendly toward the American people.

If this false-flag event does not happen now, look for one in late October, as that's the new moon just before the national election.

Another likely scenario would be large scale "Iranian backed attacks" on the Green Zone and a U.S. base elsewhere in Iraq, with significant casualties.

I'd rate the possibility of an event as 50/50 now and 60/40 (for) in the fall.

I'll be overjoyed to be wrong about all of this, btw.

Do not be afraid, brothers and sisters, just have your eyes and mind wide open and be prepared for a work stoppage to stop the madness, should it escalate.

Choose love over fear.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

A Reminder

Not only is this a "reminder" to Iran that we have our sights (literally) fixed on them, it's a "reminder" of why we need a completely new direction in foreign policy. It's a "reminder" to the voters that a vote for McCain is a vote for more war. It's a "reminder" of the mindlessness of the criminal who now occupies the White House. It's a "reminder" that we, as a nation, have already paid too high a price for war, and don't need another one.

Oh, and one more "reminder"... the aircraft carrier they just sent to remind Iran, is the same carrier that 5 years ago carried the banner of Mission Accomplished.
