As the Wall Street meltdown continues and the cumulative costs of government-backed bank bailouts rivals the cost of the war in Iraq, the Obama campaign released a two-minute television advertisement that seeks to set a serious tone for economic debate and reform.

The text of the ad reads:

In the past few weeks, Wall Street’s been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you – the people I’ve met in town halls, backyards and diners across America – our troubled economy isn’t news. 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It’s hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they’ve probably raised your rates. You’re paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less. This isn’t just a string of bad luck. The truth is that while you’ve been living up to your responsibilities Washington has not. That’s why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn’t be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track. Here’s what I believe we need to do. Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the “anything goes” culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy ‘made-in-America’ that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists – once and for all -- so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans. And yes, bring a responsible end to this war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours. Doing these things won’t be easy. But we’re Americans. We’ve met tough challenges before. And we can again. I’m Barack Obama. I hope you’ll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won’t solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will.AlterNet is a nonprofit organization and does not make political endorsements. The opinions expressed by its writers are their own.

Digg!

This man is a winner through and through. Does America want to be a winner, too? Choose Obama.

Worn out ideas of the left and the right?

Does he not think there is a significant political divide in the country? Does he not realize that there are those dedicated to serving the interests of the wealthy and then there is everyone else?

We are not one big happy family. Pretending shared citizenship is grounds for political unity is silly. There are people unalterably opposed to the progress of the poor and middle class, because that progress means they aren't getting as big a peice of pie as they want. There is no moving beyong that difference. There is one side winning, and the other side losing. Pretending another outcome is possible is another way of giving in and letting the wealthy get what they want.

I saw that ad last night. Did he really say those things? You would never hear the like coming out of the mouth of a canadian politician, unless maybe Elizabeth Grey of the Green Party or Marc Emery hehe.

Seriously, did he promise to get rid of the lobby system aka Organized Bribery? That alone would make it all worthwhile and maybe it would trickle down up here too. Can't help thinking he might have alienated those Wall Street types that gave him millions though.

If this ad disappears without a ripple, I'm just going to pack up and head for the woods. Surely even the christians are getting tired of bringing their boys home in a box.

And speaking of complete non-news, why is there special coverage of Sarah Palin's yahoo email account? GASP - family photos!!! Can it get anymore sordid? As I sadly predicted, this blatant witchhunt is only alienating the working mothers who don't have time to read the newspaper from cover to cover.

Wall Street blames it on the FEMINISTS

For crying out loud, she's a POLITICIAN. The fact that she can be a bimbo and a politician at the same time does not provoke the waves of indignation and/or awe that some journalists might think :.?

Calls for unity make me suspicious. Healthy democricies have a healthy left and a healthy right. Out of the two come the compromise and conciliation that are the warp and woof of a democracy. We're in a mess because the right has been running rampant and the left is on life support.

I agree with him that more regulation is needed. But given the amount of corporate donations he's accepted, how will they hamper his efforts to regegulate an out-of-control corporate sector?

Obama must make a sharp turn to the left if he is to pull this off.

Morning Joe, MSNBC fresh roasted

They talked about (dissed) this ad yesterday but did not run it. That is kinda low, IMO.

I think it shows the morning Joe crowd is way too much in the tank for McCain. The show is becoming less and less watch-able by the day as they diverge ever further from reality to keep that influential 'conservative capital' base happy.

When Tucker came on this morning, my TV went OFF. Who wants to listen to conversation so erudite it could be mistaken for a protracted passing of gas? Not me.

The show's constant effort to keep the tone of their coverage 'fair' and 'balanced' - between the lying old gas bag who's top advisors are all guilty of treason, and the new guy on the block who is VERY inspiring to the young and/or thinking people of the universe who actually want to solve problems - is nauseating, the collective corporate CYA effort is down right sickening.

Moments like that are what the off button is for.

Let the (honest) investigations begin! You could start with Andrea Mitchell and David Gregory. Bring on the investigative reporters, ask them what did they know and when did they know it? Andrea lied (selectively reported) us into this war and our national bankruptcy. Was that to support her boss and husband's agenda? What a good employee and wife she is!

Being a good wife doesn't excuse treason. Gregory too, spins it as hard as O'Reily to support corporate values and pseudo-factoids, he just does it more nicely. I m so disappointed with him and the thrust of his show, what a flack.

It appears they are virtually all in the Republican tank. I am so glad we have Rachel's new show, it makes me feel slightly hopeful that we might get some actual news coverage.

So this morning Cheney's wife is on sharing a book she just wrote for children about how wonderful our constitution is.

How can they do this to us with a straight face? I'd like to know. Her husband loves torture, Ok'ed it, made it happen to little children in Iraq. MSNBC and her hypocrisy is just astounding.

So Cheney's wife is a seriously creepy case when it comes to talking about educating children, her performance reminds me of Laura Bush. So polished, so perfect, so married to a total pervert.

Are there lots of them like that in her crowd? Looks like it. Ugh.
