President-elect Barack Obama has approached CNN's chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, to be the country's next surgeon general, the cable news network said Tuesday. CNN said it has kept Gupta from reporting on health care policy and other matters involving the incoming Obama administration since learning he was under consideration for the post.

A Democrat with knowledge of the discussions over the surgeon general spot cautioned that there was not yet a final decision on who would fill the post. The person spoke on a condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the matter.

Obama's transition office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Gupta hosts "House Call" on CNN, contributes reports to CBS News, and writes a column for Time magazine. He is a neurosurgeon and is on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. During the Clinton administration, he was a White House fellow and special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The surgeon general typically isn't heavily involved in shaping an administration's policy, but it can be a very effective bully pulpit. Past surgeons general have proved instrumental in battling tobacco and AIDS.

Having such a well-known TV personality could bring the surgeon general attention not seen since C. Everett Koop help the position under President Ronald Reagan. Koop is best known for pushing to make AIDS a public health issue rather than a moral issue, and Reagan faced pressure to fire him. Koop has said Reagan never interfered.

CNN said Gupta would not comment on the discussions and released a statement that said, "Since first learning that Dr. Gupta was under consideration for the surgeon general position, CNN has made sure that his on-air reporting has been on health and wellness matters and not on health care policy or any matters involving the new administration."

More details from the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz:

The offer followed a two-hour Chicago meeting in November with Obama, who said that Gupta could be the highest-profile surgeon general in history and would have an expanded role in providing health policy advice, the sources said. Gupta later spoke with Tom Daschle, Obama's White House health czar and nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, and other advisers to the president-elect.

The Michigan-born son of Indian and Pakistani parents, Gupta has always been drawn to health policy. He was a White House fellow in the late 1990s, writing speeches and crafting policy for Hillary Clinton. His appointment would give the administration a prominent official of Southwest Asian descent and a skilled television spokesman.

Jacob Goldstein of the Wall Street Journal offers:

There's a certain logic to picking a TV talking head to be surgeon general, because the surgeon general is largely a talking head. The top doc does oversee the 6,000-member Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, but the real work of the job is traveling around the country, using the job as a bully pulpit to advance a public health agenda.

Digg!

Drs.Oz or Chopra are both distinguished. Certainly Ron Paul M.D. would be very capable.

A talking head for the drug industry and infotainer from CNN is not what a Surgeon General needs on their CV/resume and not what we wanted when we thought we elected change.

Again Obama lowers the bar.

I have no respect for Gupta whatsoever. As a sociologist who has researched the stigma of obesity, he is obviously cares far more about making a buck of pharma and the diet companies that really solving the "problem." Some of the stereotypes he perpetuates are beyond belief. I could not think of a worse choice than this. Call me beyond disappointed!

Wrap Obama up in cellophane and ship him to the nearest corporate office, because if he even considers a shill like Gupta, he is not thinking for the people of this country, he is thinking only of making his corporate masters happy.

And so the veil of illusion that leads actual progressives to think they are represented in this government begins to lift

With this guy, rest assured the mainstream will be hearing of no significant connection between environment and human health, and sales volume and profits for the fossil fuel family tree will continue. This is especially true for the top heavy branch, big pharma, where symptoms and cellular damage (versus removing cause and thereby curing) = big profits. Science KNOWS why people are sick and failing to reproduce! Obama, there are other choices out there.

Isn't this the same MD who on Larry King confronted Michael Moore with lies and double-speak. Remember, it was he who informed us that in France, people wait 5 years for surgery. This lie, and others, were Gupta's attempt to assuage his corporate sponsors. He is a lackey and propagandist for the failed "health care system" in America. I thought we voted for change...and yet another corporate good ol' boy. SOMETHING STINKS HERE!!!

While doing a piece on his recent "Planet in Peril" Gupta compared two lead-poisoned smelter cities, Herculaneum, Missouri and LaOroya, Peru. He totally ignored the fact the Herculaneum is still severly poisoned from the Doe Run Company's lead smelter even after a multitude of clean-ups and buyouts and supposed improvements on the smelter. Certainly it is "cleaner" than Peru but it is not the clean and squeaky he portrayed it as. It bothers me he ignored the plight of the American town in order to draw a contrats to the Peruvian mess, caused by the same company. He actually praised Doe Run for "cleaning-up" Herky. While he was talking to residents, Jack and Leslie Warden, the Herky smelter was belching out black smoke for all to see...even Gupta. I have a picture of that!

Mr. Sanjay Gupta is a nice choice of President Obama with respect to his education, experiences and other. He is really qualified. There won't be a need for Dr. Sanjay Gupta to get payday loans for a while, that is for sure. Dr. Gupta is a graduate of the University of Michigan medical school, and a former White House fellow. He is also the chief medical correspondent for CNN, and in addition to broadcasts, also blogs for CNN's Health website. His curriculum vitae is impressive (that's what doctors call their résumé) and that is one of the primary reasons why he won't need payday loans, and probably one of the main reasons why he's been picked by Obama to be the next Surgeon General. Surgeons General are typically people of imposing medical authority, as previous Surgeons General have been, such as Ronald Reagan's surgeon general, C. Everett Koop, perhaps the best-known surgeon general of US history. Dr. Gupta, despite some initial opposition, would be a solid pick for the job. To see just how he operates click payday loans, if you've got Dr. Gupta on the brain.
