Hillary Apologizes to Black Voters for Bill Clinton and Ferraro's Racial Insensitivity

Posted by Paddy , Cliff Schecter's Blog at 4:11 AM on March 13, 2008.

"We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Senator Obama," said Hillary Clinton.

I blame Keith.

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton did something Wednesday night that she almost never does. She apologized. And once she started, she didn't seem able to stop.

The New York senator, who is in a tight race with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, struck several sorry notes at an evening forum sponsored by the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a group of more than 200 black community newspapers across the country.

Her biggest apology came in response to a question about comments by her husband, Bill Clinton, after the South Carolina primary, which Obama won handily. Bill Clinton said Jesse Jackson also won South Carolina when he ran for president in 1984 and 1988, a comment many viewed as belittling Obama's success.

"I want to put that in context. You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive," Hillary Clinton said. "We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Senator Obama."

"Anyone who has followed my husband's public life or my public life know very well where we have stood and what we have stood for and who we have stood with," she said, acknowledging that whoever wins the nomination will have to heal the wounds of a bruising, historic contest.

"Once one of us has the nomination there will be a great effort to unify the Democratic party and we will do so, because, remember I have a lot of supporters who have voted for me in very large numbers and I would expect them to support Senator Obama if he were the nominee," she said.

Digg!

Republican style apologies

Hillary seems to have violated a couple RNC patents with this "apology".

"I'm sorry if some people found that offensive. It wasn't meant to be."

In other words "Sorry you are such a hyper-sensitive ninny who fails to recognize that I am so not a racist. Now I've apologized, so please shut up you uppity negro."

How about "Sorry that my campaign surrogates have belittled Obama's success, along with the success of any past or future black candidates."

Once she finishes that she can apologize for saying that John McCain is more qualified than Obama (the likely Democratic nominee) to lead this country. And that apology should be for all of us.

Thank You, Hillary. Apology gratefully accepted.
You have just taken a big step toward restoring my trust in you and confidence that YOU control your campaign. Now let's move on.

Hilary took notes from 'Vast Right Wing Conspiracy'

What Hilary doesn't mention is that while she was noticing the 'vast right wing conspiracy' she was taking notes.

There is so much scorched earth around her now there is no way she can go back.

Her strongest liability as a candidate entering this race was the virtiole she inspired in a vast section of the electorate, fairly or unfairly, somehow she managed to choose to extend that territory and now expects someone else to fix it for her.

She is too smart a woman to not have made every one of these choices herself and it is time for her to pay for those choices.

There is no way I or any other independent that supports Obama will support her. In talking to solid democrats I find few now that consider supporting her a viable option.

Virtually all of us started out with the intention of supporting the nominee of the DNC, because of Bush's Rovian scorched earth.

Many of us find ourselves in the amazing position of wondering how we missed that those that 'hated' Hilary were possibly noticing something we missed. Her condescension and disrespect for most is the hallmark of an intellectual snob.

As a final note, did anyone notice she did it again, a reframe where she equated the two individuals.

While clever, it guarantees, for me, I will vote for McCain before I vote for her.

Danielle

so it's okay that Louis Farrakhan gets to think that Obama is a "good guy", publicly support him, yet Obama doesn't apologize for his messages of hate? Maybe Senator Clinton should have said, "I can't help it if President Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro think I'm a great candidate, but as to whether I reject their support? Well, let's just say I denounce them."

So Obama wouldn't be running if he was not a black man? Would Hillary be able to make the run if she wasn't married to Bill? Her actions over the past month may well destroy the Democratic party - sending a whole lot of us to an independent 3rd party.

Sorry 'if' those comments offended anyone? They weren't meant to be offensive?

So that's her apology?, Apparently, from Clinton's point of view racial messages belittling Obama fall in a gray area...they are not clearly offensive, only maybe offensive...she's not offended by them but IF someone else was offended ok sorry they feel that way.

Racist cartoon

I was sitting at my quiet desk today and a co-worker sent around a cartoon copyrighted from the Halifax Herald Limited in Canada showing a caricature of Obama standing next to a sing that read “White House”. The balloon caption next to his rather enlarged head read, “…well first off, that sign’s gonna have to go…”

I’m seriously considering voting third party if Clinton gets the nomination. Her campaing will not stop attacking Obama and dividing us like Republicans have been doing the past 7 or so years.

I’ve had enough with of Corporate Republicans and Democrats.

I might believe Hillary. Unfortunately I was born the same year as Brown v. Board of Education. I have witnessed hateful behavior by small children whose only encounter with a Black person was sitting next to me in school. On the other hand my experience was of children and adults who felt entitled to offend me whenever the spirit moved them to do so. I also remember the shock and surprise whenever I defended myself. Because in the world they lived in, I was to submit. This campaign has reminded me there are still people who believe they are entitled, and that Blacks need to submit. Sorry Hillary your apology rings false. I'm sure you will have appeased Maxine Waters and Earl Ofari Hutchinson, and therein lies your problem. You will begin to think they are a more accurate barometer of the community, than the votes cast for Obama.

Ordinarily, Alternet Comments are a little left-leaning (good)and quite intelligent (better.) THESE comments are pretty sad. Can no one step back, take a deep breath, read what Bill Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro actually said and conclude: "Hey, these comments are meaningless and surely without malice! Let's not get distracted!" Instead, it seems we Dems are anxious for another stupid family feud. AND, if that gets trivial enough and foolish enough, we'll have 4 more years of Bush McCain! How's that sound to y'all?

This is amazing that people think racism has gone away, what with political correctedness all the rage? There will always be a racial divide no matter where in the world we are, be it Europe, Africa, Asia, North or South America, get over it! First they want to pretend it aint about race, and now, that is all it's been about... hm? Does anyone remember Bill Richardson? It was all ok to denounce, and not support him because he is half hispanic, and therefore could have done a lot to heal the major wound of this whole mess, which is immigration, but because of his color, neither black nor white voted for him in any significant amount. Was that racist? Did it matter? He was smart to get out when he did. Well, now what? I guess McCain is Able, or McCain is not Able, but at least race is not his main nemesis, as it is with the demos, whom he will slew, if we don't get this right - now! Good luck, hopefully anmother civil war is not around the corner, just to fit in nicely with our terrible economy, and bad ratings everywhere, including here. Lastly, to heal this wound, we must decide quickly, if we want a winner, or a loser on the ticket? It's time for a town meeting of the kind that can make the best decision as to who elect, and it must run on all grounds, or otherwise start looking for a third party canidate who can change America, instead of just saying, "change", as they have been. Lay it out across the board, as to how this change will come about, and before the next primaries in Penn. Let's lay down a plan, and stop only seeking who we voted for. Whether it's the Clinton machine, or the Obama Chicago machine, we must make the right choice now!

If I make a racist remark, I must apologize, if someone else does, do I have to still apologize? What is a racist remark? Did the pastors make a racist remark, when they said what they said yesterday, about people sitting out of the voting process this November, if Mrs. White gets elected? What is going on with this country? Is the devil running to and fro, looking for our demise, or what?

May the best canidate win, but let's stop waging private racists wars, because of secret racism. It is just as racist for any color to not vote for another because of color, either way, as it is to out and out say racist things. I understand we have a huge disparity in this country's politics when it comes to race; yet, this is how it has been set up. In order for there to be a true changing of the guard, we must first collaberate on who is more qualified. They said, it wasn't about race, initially, so many voted for the woman, because since it wasn't about race, gender became the next big, best thing, enlivened by experience. I'd personally like to hear them both give a full detailed speech, as to what they are planning to do for America, then I will know; instead all were getting is Facebook politics, which just isn't working for me, or many others I know. We want to hear substance, not rhetoric of vagueness.

THE TORRES-VIGNALI CONNECTION is explored in detail in a congressional report that resulted from Pardongate, when revelations surfaced that President Clinton granted clemency for Carlos Vignali Jr. — convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison in 1995 — along with other convicted criminals and one-time international fugitive Marc Rich. The granting of clemency occurred after payments were made to Clinton’s brother-in-law, Hugh Rodham, the brother of former first lady, New York state senator and 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Released in March 2002 by the congressional Committee on Government Reform, “Justice Undone: Clemency Decisions in the Clinton White House” details Hugh Rodham’s involvement in the Vignali affair, as well as the long business history Vignali once shared with George Torres.

The report takes to task top L.A. elected officials, including county Supervisor Gloria Molina, then–state Senator Richard Polanco, then–state Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa and U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra, among others, for lobbying on behalf of Vignali Jr., in light of his drug conviction and the fact that DEA agents long suspected Vignali Sr. to be involved in drug trafficking — along with Torres. While a member of the California state Assembly, Villaraigosa wrote the first letter on Vignali’s behalf on May 24, 1996.

In particular, L.A. Sheriff Lee Baca and former U.S. Attorney Alejandro Mayorkas were heavily criticized for lobbying for Vignali Jr.’s clemency. The report found the input of Baca and Mayorkas to the White House to be “instrumental” in the decision to grant clemency to Vignali Jr., who at his drug-trafficking trial in 1994 confirmed a close family association with Torres. Attorneys for Torres told the Weekly in 2005 that the association between the Vignalis and Torres has long since ended.
