The big political story today will not come from Oregon or Kentucky.

It has arrived, already, from Boston.

Ted Kennedy is seriously ill. The seizures he suffered over the weekend were related to a malignant brain tumor that, depending on its seriousness, could end his tenure in the Senate.

Doctors treating the senior Senator announced today that "preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe." Translation: the 76-year-old champion of civil right, labor rights, health care, education and a sane foreign policy is heading into the most serious fight of his life. A doctor says, "The usual course of treatment for Kennedy's type of tumor includes radiation and chemotherapy."

How successful that treatment will be depends on how advanced his condition has become.

Kennedy is reportedly "in good spirits and full of energy." And it is probably fair to say that if anyone can beat a tumor, it is this epic persona. But Kennedy, who has been a critical player in defining liberal Democratic politics for better part of fifty years, is likely to be sidelined at what will be an essential moment for the causes and ideals he has promoted for so very long.

Democrats are on the march, poised to gain control of both the White House and the Congress for the first time since 1994--and, perhaps, for the first extended period since Kennedy came to Congress in the 1960s.

His candidate for President, Barack Obama, is about to secure the Democratic nomination. Voters in Oregon are expected to give the Illinois senator a solid win tonight, while voters in Kentucky back New York Senator Hillary Clinton. When all is said and done, Obama will move to within touching distance of the nomination.

That nomination, which will come by acclamation, will be made at this summer's convention in Denver.

Since 1972, Kennedy has delivered the loudest, the boldest and often the most moving addresses at the quadrennial gatherings of what is in so many senses his party.

The question, today, is whether the liberal lion can roar once more at a Democratic National Convention.

The hope, surely, is that he will.

Even if he isn't there. He's larger than life. I'm sorry to hear the news and hope for the best. He voted against invading Iraq and for that I admire him. He said it was the most important vote of his life in the Senate. There's a feeling of security having the old timers around. Here's hoping. ANNA

Ted Kennedy is a giant of a man and Democrat. He IS a man, and that means that he is not perfect. He has championed Medical Cannabis for years and now is poised to take advantaged of the research that has taken place, in spit of the lies and deceits from government agencies and medical know-nothings.

He should instruct his doctors to find the studies that show Cannabis therapy has been shown to retard the growth and even Kill Brain Tumors precisely of the type he has.

I admire Kennedy greatly, especially for his once-criticized vote against the preemptive invasion of Iraq.

It may very well be too soon to talk about this, but...
I read that, if Kennedy must retire or if he dies first, the people of Mass. must hold a special election to replace him. Likely to possibly run: On the Democrat side, Congressman Markey (my personal favorite); On the Republican side, former Mass. governor Mitt Romney (NOOOOOOOO!!!! Please, God, NOOOOOO!!!!).

In any case, Kennedy was very possibly one of the, if not the, most liberal current members of the Senate.
If he must leave the Senate, we all will suffer for it. Hopefully he recovers. But either way, he has blessed us all with his wisdom.
I wish a majority of the other US Senators were as wise as he.

This news is horrifying and speaking for myself as a citizen of Massachusetts who has been very proud of Ted Kennedy for many years our hearts are broken here in the Bay State. He means so very much to everyone in the United States, but for us here he has stayed in Massachusetts, campaigned and won here, he is our link with our past and hopefully with Obama's future. Our prayers and hopes are with him.

I wonder if Senator Kennedy had a habit of useing his cell phone on the left side!!! It sounds like the tumor is in a likely place to be associated with that activity.

I find that I lost all respect for him when he endorsed Obama, a man I read as a sociopath, and I don't feel the sense of loss I would have before. But it does explain how he could be taken in by the guy.

I have a great Ted Kennedy story to share. In 1982 when Frank Lautenberg made his first run for the US Senate from NJ, Kennedy came to the state to campaign for Lautenberg at three different locations. I was among the warm-up speakers to keep the crowd of a few hundred engaged before Kennedy and Lautenberg arrived at their second stop, so I was on the stage for the rest of the program. They were running behind schedule with their largest event an hour away. After both Lautenberg and Kennedy spoke, Frank dashed out of the room, headed for the car. Senator Kennedy was still on the stage and became aware of a Trenton drill team waiting to perform. He shouted after the departing candidate, "Frank, Frank, the children." Someone snagged Lautenberg and brought him back in, and the children had their chance to perform -- surely a high moment in their young lives thanks to an observant Senator Kennedy.

Chemo and radiation

...are barbaric ways to deal with cancer.

I recommend he see a Doctor of Naturopathy for a humane and holistic approach that won't result in a pukefest and massive cell die-off that will probably kill a man his age much sooner than if he does nothing at all.

His immune system is the place to start with a general regimen of a highly nutritious and largely raw, green diet completely lacking in sugar of all kinds. Bone broth from humanely raised, antibiotic and pesticide free animals. Probiotics. Fresh ocean air. Live performances of classical music.

A company called Poseidon's Harvest markets a brown seaweed product first researched specifically in response to the Chernobyl incident. You can read about the tests by searching for the active ingredient in brown seaweed, "fucoidan" at www.pubmed.gov that show amazing results in reversing malignant tumors in laboratory mice.

There are other therapies like the "Rife" technology. Royal Rife was a doctor and inventor who created a mechanical microscope as accurate as laser microscopy but preceded it by decades. He discovered the resonant frequency of invading pathogens (parasites, bacteria, viruses, mold, fungus) and discovered that by introducing a corresponding frequency to the body it would destroy the given invader. He had 100% success in his clinic until he was literally run out of the country by the AMA.

Someone mentioned cell phone use as a possible cause of Mr. Kennedy's brain cancer. Cell phone use is relatively new so no one knows for sure but it's possible to imagine that radio waves coming straight at your brain for extended periods of time (who uses land lines anymore?) might cause a wee problem. The bluetooth things are even worse since they're always receiving the signal even when they're not in use... plus they make people look ridiculous like some kind of space-age zombies as they walk around in circles in the produce department trying to have IMPORTANT conversations while they shop for dinner in vain...

Someone brought up the use of marijuana for invigorating neural pathways. IMAGINE if Ted Kennedy became a spokesperson for the restorative effects, as proven in laboratory tests, of marijuana. I will personally send him some if he agrees to try it. He will especially need it if he decides to poison and bludgeon himself with conventional chemo and radiation.

Aloe Vera has been known to be effective in treating cancer.

If I were as wealthy as a Kennedy I would go straight to the Deepak Chopra Institute in San Diego. Ayurveda is a 5,000 yr. old approach to illness, it's therapies are deeply comforting as well as efficacious. He's got oodles of money, he can command all the kings horses and all the kings men to put him together again. Why settle for a treatment that will make him feel like dying while he's still alive?

But let's be honest. The prognosis isn't good.

Ted Kennedy has been an important voice for the left. I take this opportunity to honor him for his great service to the progressive faction of the country. I wish him peace, joy, love and happiness for the rest of his life.
